The Polyphonic Singing of the Aka Pygmies of Central Africa

02:59
UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/polyphonic-singing-of-the-aka-pygmies-of-central-africa-00082 Description: The Aka Pygmies living in the south-west region of the Central African Republic have developed a distinctive vocal musical tradition, which involves a complex type of contrapuntal polyphony based on four voices, mastered by all members of the Aka community. Music and dance form an integral part of Aka rituals including ceremonies related to the inauguration of new encampments, hunting and funerals. Unlike polyphonic systems that are written down in notation, the vocal tradition of the Aka Pygmies allows for spontaneous expression and improvisation. During performances, each singer can change his or her voice to produce a multitude of variations, creating the impression that the music is continuously evolving. The songs are generally accompanied by various percussion and string instruments, each one played for a specific occasion.Among the most common instruments are a local type of drum (enzeko), a harp-like instrument known as the geedale-bagongo, and the single-string bow (mbela). The songs perpetuate essential knowledge for the cohesion of the group and the preservation of community values. The dances are performed to the accompaniment of vibrant hand-clapping. Depending on the ritual, some dances feature men only, while others may be executed by couples or by male and female solo dancers. Relying entirely on oral transmission, the Aka Pygmies have succeeded in preserving their musical knowledge within the community by including children in rituals from an early age. The lifestyle of the Aka Pygmies has been drastically disrupted due to the changes currently taking place in the Central African Republic. The scarcity of game resulting from deforestation, the rural exodus and the folklorization of their heritage for the tourist industry are the principal factors contributing to the gradual disappearance of many of their traditional customs, rituals and skills. African American Incarceration, Dr. DBurris-Kitchen1

06:00
Comments With Dr. James Haney Presents*African American Incarceration, with Dr. DBurris-Kitchen, one of the leading activists on the issue of African American Incarceration, who talks about some of the hardships incarceration has upon young African American men and women, who are penalized long after they serve their time, Part 1 The level of violence the Report considered has become a part of our school system, which is only a reflection of the violence in our homes and society. The General Assembly, for example, is considering a bill that would make it a felony for parents if their child killed another child with a handgun. Such radical proposals only testify to the increasing number of personal assaults in our schools and the seizure of knives and guns from the very young. Teen violent death rates can be decreased, said the Report, "by shaping teen behavior through positive approaches. These include the development of social skills among teenagers, especially conflict resolution skills, positive role models, monitoring guns and other weapons, enforcing minimum drinking age laws and drunk driving laws, and giving teens greater access to counseling and drug rehabilitation services." Teen violent deaths can also be decreased through efforts to create closer cooperation between communities and law enforcement officials. In Nashville, for example, law enforcement officials have endorsed a plan that would offer financial rewards for anyone participating in neighborhood crime prevention program. This proposal will allow community groups to meet with the Policed to discuss crime prevention. Participants would get an annual tax credit . This is considered an excellent method for dealing with the rising crime rate. I need you to support and subscribe to this channel. Youth & Violence: Ben Herson on African Hip Hop, UCLA

19:29
Ben Herson of Nomadic Wax speaks at a March 12 forum at UCLA on "Global Perspectives on Youth & Violence." Young people make up almost a fifth of the world's population. Close to 85 percent of the 1.1 billion young men and women between the ages of 15 and 24 live in developing countries. Rapid population growth, the unavailability of housing and support services, poverty, unemployment and underemployment among youth, the decline in the authority of local communities, overcrowding in poor urban areas, the disintegration of the family, and ineffective educational systems are some of the new pressures young people must deal with. This forum examines the issues facing young people today and explores the global phenomenon of youth involvement in violence--both as perpetrators and as victims--along with prescriptions and new approaches. The event was sponsored by the UCLA African Studies Center, the Center for Near Eastern Studies, the Latin American Institute, the Department of French and Francophone Studies, and USA for Africa.

The Myth of the Educated Black Man, Black Woman, Negro Pt 1 of 4

08:45
In this series I give a quick review of the reasons why the current "Educational Institutions" in this country don't educate but instead indoctrinate. This flaw in the thinking of so many Americans has led to the acceptance of one of the most effective mass mind control and social conditioning projects in history. Theres alot that I didnt get to cover like how only about 15% of the actual physics and mathematics that govern how the universe operates gets taught to students in high school and college. Or how young boys are being systematically labeled "learning Disabled", destroying their self esteem and motivation, making them more vulnerble to street life and systematic incarceration. On the other hand white South Africans are learning that now the tables have turned, life isn't so easy. When Apartheid ended black South Africans got opportunities that weren't there before. Phindi and Tschepo Kgaudi took these with both hands. Now they are living their dream, as South Africa's first shoe designers. "Now we stay in a bigger house, with bigger cars and we didn't inherit that, we earned that," smiles Tschepo. Meanwhile, the white Grobler family live in shacks in a scrap yard, barely earning enough to survive. Johan Grobler argues Apartheid hasn't ended, it's just changed; "now it's just the opposite." As both families look towards the future, the Grobler's feel their only chance for a better life is to move. "This isn't my land anymore. The blacks come first." At East High School, many African American males face similar struggles and difficulties, and until now, there was no real outlet to express and explore these experiences. That is why a Goodwill resource counselor decided to create a unique mentor group to address these issues. The Men at Work African American Male Mentor Group is comprised of professional African American mentors and young African American students and provides an opportunity for the young men to connect with positive professional men in the community. The group discusses everything from school work, grades and the college experience to healthy interactions with authority figures and overcoming personal and professional adversity. Mentors and mentees alike take pride in the groups success and relish in the bonds that have been created.

Obama Message to African Young People

00:43
Here are key quotes from the speech delivered by US President Barack Obama to the parliament of Ghana on Saturday: AFRICA'S FUTURE "We must start from the simple premise that Africa's future is up to Africans. I say this knowing full well the tragic past that has sometimes haunted this part of the world. I have the blood of Africa within me, and my family's own story encompasses both the tragedies and triumphs of the larger African story. ... GOOD GOVERNANCE Development depends upon good governance. That is the ingredient which has been missing in far too many places, for far too long. That is the change that can unlock Africa's potential. And that is a responsibility that can only be met by Africans. ... CORRUPTION AND TYRANNY "Repression takes many forms, and too many nations are plagued by problems that condemn their people to poverty. No country is going to create wealth if its leaders exploit the economy to enrich themselves, or police can be bought off by drug traffickers. ... That is not democracy, that is tyranny, and now is the time for it to end. ... AFRICA DOESN'T NEED STRONGMEN "Across Africa, we have seen countless examples of people taking control of their destiny, and making change from the bottom up. ... Make no mistake: history is on the side of these brave Africans, and not with those who use coups or change Constitutions to stay in power. Africa doesn't need strongmen, it needs strong institutions. ... US EYE ON CORRUPTION "As we provide this support, I have directed my administration to give greater attention to corruption in our Human Rights report. People everywhere should have the right to start a business or get an education without paying a bribe. We have a responsibility to support those who act responsibly and to isolate those who don't, and that is exactly what America will do. ... FIGHTING AIDS "Building on the strong efforts of President Bush, we will carry forward the fight against HIV/AIDS. We will pursue the goal of ending deaths from malaria and tuberculosis, and eradicating polio. ... ENDING GENOCIDE, TERRORISM "Now let me be clear: Africa is not the crude caricature of a continent at war. But for far too many Africans, conflict is a part of life, as constant as the sun. There are wars over land and wars over resources. And it is still far too easy for those without conscience to manipulate whole communities into fighting among faiths and tribes. These conflicts are a millstone around Africa's neck. That is why we must stand up to inhumanity in our midst. ... When there is genocide in Darfur or terrorists in Somalia, these are not simply African problems _ they are global security challenges, and they demand a global response. That is why we stand ready to partner through diplomacy, technical assistance, and logistical support, and will stand behind efforts to hold war criminals accountable. ... YES YOU CAN "Now, that triumph must be won once more, and it must be won by you. And I am particularly speaking to the young people. ... You have the power to hold your leaders accountable, and to build institutions that serve the people. You can serve in your communities, and harness your energy and education to create new wealth and build new connections to the world. You can conquer disease, end conflicts, and make change from the bottom up. You can do that. Yes you can. Because in this moment, history is on the move.''

SAVE THE FOREST, SAVE THE TREES, BUT LOCK UP THE BLACK MEN

04:18
What does a black man in the hood and OBAMA have in common? Nothing. And with that said it is very little chance that he will give any real attention to the problems they face....especially the incarceration rates among African Americans. This is typical black leadership and is of no surprise. However, what concern me is there are very few voices stirring against this genocidal practices, in fact there seem to be a feeling of acceptance from the Black community. Yes, it seem that its an unspoken cry out of SAVE the forest, save the animals, but fuck those black men, lock them down.
