Dick’s Sporting Goods and Walmart took steps Wednesday to restrict gun sales. Dick’s said it will immediately stop selling assault-style rifles and ban the sale of all guns to anyone under 21. Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer, followed late Wednesday saying it will no longer sell firearms and ammunition to people younger than 21.

The announcements from the major national retailers came after a teenager killed 17 students and educators with an AR-15 rifle. Dick’s Chairman and CEO Ed Stack said he urged a ban on assault-style firearms, bump stocks and high-capacity magazines and raise the minimum age to buy firearms to 21. He said universal background checks should be required, and there should be a complete database of those banned from buying firearms. He also called for the closing of the private sale and gun show loophole that enables purchasers to escape background checks.
Walmart said it was also removing items from its website that resemble assault-style rifles, including airsoft guns and toys. “Our heritage as a company has always been in serving sportsmen and hunters, and we will continue to do so in a responsible way,” Walmart said.
THE MOTIVE FOR GUN CONTROL AT DICK’S SPORTING GOODS
The vast majority of Dick’s business is selling sporting goods like basketballs and sneakers. Joseph Feldman, a senior managing director at the Telsey Advisory Group, estimated that guns and ammunition account for 8 percent of the company’s sales. Dick’s, which had net sales of $7.92 billion in the fiscal year that ended in January 2017, has a much bigger stake in youth sports. “The longer-term positive perception that they create a more welcoming environment will offset any lost sales in the year,” Feldman said.
Kroger won't sell guns to anyone under 21 years old; the grocer sells weapons at Fred Meyer stores. The nation's largest grocery chain, said it will stop selling guns and ammunition to customers who are younger than 21 years old. It's the third major retailer in two days to impose new age restrictions on sales. Kroger sells weapons and ammunition at 45 Fred Meyer stores located in four western states. Those stores sell general merchandise. The Kroger grocery stores do not sell weapons.
Dick's Sporting Goods Media Statement about their New Anti-Assault Style Gun Sales and Ban Policy
We will no longer sell assault-style rifles, also referred to as modern sporting rifles/
We had already removed them from all DICK’S stores after the Sandy Hook massacre, but we will now remove them from sale at all 35 Field & Stream stores.
We will no longer sell firearms to anyone under 21 years of age.
We will no longer sell high capacity magazines.
We never have and never will sell bump stocks that allow semi-automatic weapons to fire more rapidly.
At the same time, we implore our elected officials to enact common sense gun reform and pass the following regulations:
Ban assault-style firearms
Raise the minimum age to purchase firearms to 21
Ban high capacity magazines and bump stocks
Require universal background checks that include relevant mental health information and previous interactions with the law
Ensure a complete universal database of those banned from buying firearms
Close the private sale and gun show loophole that waives the necessity of background checks
