Watch more How to Do Karate videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/500200-What-Are-the-Major-Styles-of-Karate-Karate-Lessons Learn about the major styles of karate from karate instructor Richard Amos in this Howcast video. Okay, the major styles of karate. There are in fact more and more styles are coming out into the open now. When I started karate in the 70s there were really just a few. Shotokan, which is what I do, is probably the most widely spread for a number of reasons. First of all, because they had a instructor's program guiding from the early 60s in Japan and the Japan Karate Association sent out instructors all over the world in the early to mid-60s so that really spread karate. In fact, anyone who does Shotokan karate today probably can trace their original instructor from that first group of teachers that came from Japan. Other styles which are very popular, you have Kyokushinkai which is like Shotokan a very big scale technique of karate but they focus much more on building a heavy power because they have a knock-down system. They don't have punches to the face. They have kicks to the face, so obviously you have to have quite a high guard which is very characteristic of that style. They hit really hard so they're usually more heavily muscled than some of the other karate styles. Another very, very big style is Goju-ryu which bears its Okinawan roots a little bit more strongly than something Shotokan and there'll be more body conditioning in that one, more makiwara training which is the punching post which is a very traditional training tool. And other styles such as Shito-ryu and Shorin-ryu resemble each other to a degree but they all have their emphases. Some of them are more flowing. Shito-ryu has the big stances of Shotokan but not quite as much expansive body movement, etc., etc. But there are really many styles out there and they all have their own character.

In this video I share my personal opinion on the top ten martial arts in order of effectiveness. NOTE: When I say "traditional" karate, I actually ment "Sport" karate, I apologise for this linguistic imprecision. I have practiced two styles of Karate (Shotokan, Kyokushin), Taekwondo, and Wushu Kun Fu, so although I'm not an expert I do have first hand experience of martial arts and the martial world. Ofcourse I do realise there are many factors to keep into consideration and martial arts like Karate and Kung Fu have many different styles which have variations, but in this video we want to have an interesting opportunity to share out opinions as martial arts lovers. People love to argue about the best martial arts style... I don't! In this video, I'll tell you why. If you like it, hit SUBSCRIBE, then take my 7-DAY MARTIAL ARTS CHALLENGE! http://www.senseiando.com/updates/ When someone asks me to name the best martial arts style, I always answer back, “The best style for whom?” For you? Your grandmother? An eight-year old kid? Is this person strong or frail? Aggressive or shy? Are they blind? Did they lose a leg in a bear attack? How can I recommend something to you if I don’t know who you are or what you've been through? After I know who you are, I need to know, “What do you want?” Are you interested in martial arts to get in shape? For self-defense? Are you looking to compete in tournaments? Do you want to be a movie star? Here's something else to think about-- even if you figure out the best martial arts style for you today, it may not be the best style for you a year from now! You change and your goals change over time. So, consider this-- each martial art offers a different experience. That experience might be priceless to you at one stage of your life, but worthless to you at another stage. that's why you shouldn't worry about signing up for the wrong style. Just get started in something and see what that experience can offer you today. Here are four quick tips top help you get started in a style: Tip #1: Visit your local martial arts schools. Sign up for a trial class or just sit and watch. If you feel comfortable, sign up. If you don’t, get out of there and move on to the next one. Also, don’t let anyone bully you into choosing a style. If you like BJJ, then don’t let a boxer or a Karate guy talk you out of it. If you like kickboxing, then don’t let a Judo or BJJ guy make you feel like you’re wasting your time. This is your journey, not theirs. Tip #2: Seek the best teacher, not the best style. There are some styles that get made fun of all the time, like Aikido, or Systema, or my beloved Kung Fu. But I've known guys in each of those styles who were great fighters! Remember this-- in the end, it’s not about the style, it’s about the person practicing the style. Tip #3: Observe the students. If you’re not sure about the teacher or the style, then look at the people who have been training for a year or two. Ask yourself, “Is that what I want to be doing in a year or two?" Your fellow students are a window to your future. If you want to do what they can do, well, then sign up and do whatever they’re doing. Tip #4: Practice. Just because your teacher is famous or your style is popular, that doesn't mean you are automatically going to achieve your goals. The fact is that a style serves the student, a student doesn’t serve the style. So, if you're lazy, you're going to suck no matter what style you pick. Don’t be that guy! Whatever style you practice, practice! Final thought. There’s a lot of trash talk out there between different martial arts, which is ridiculous because we're all on the same team. The big difference isn’t between the people who practice this style and the people who practice that style, it's between the people who practice martial arts and the people who don’t! To the people who don't study martial arts, we're ALL a bunch of weirdos! So, instead of trashing each other’s arts, let’s start promoting them—all of them. Because I’d rather see my friends and family training in a style that I don’t practice than not training at all. Wouldn't you? THANKS FOR WATCHING! Despite historical conflicts between the two cultures, Chinese martial arts have significantly influenced those of Japan especially in the evolution of Karate. Many Hong Kong Kung Fu films often depict the Japanese martial artists as either the antagonists or side characters (which isn’t surprising considering which ethnicity the movies are primarily based on and thus favoring). Of course, Japanese films have also portrayed their own martial arts albeit usually with a more minimalistic style of fight choreography utilizing less, more economical moves in contrast to the extravagant yet intricate forms of Hong Kong films. I’m not a martial arts expert but a fan of awesome fight choreography so I decided to delve a bit deeper and research some of the fighting styles used in certain fight scenes. Here are links to short films featured in this video: Da Uomo a Uomo (From Man to Man) Vol. 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WJUkBMIYLw Dragon Lady: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlUfjTLr5KQ List of movies and martial arts styles featured in order of appearance: 1. Taekwondo used in MMA (fightTIPS.com)►http://bit.ly/TKDinMMA It must be our competitive nature as fighters that we often argue which martial art is the best. Be it for MMA or street fighting, there are pros and cons of every single martial art. No one will disagree that boxing is great for footwork, head movement and punch combos. However it teaches you nothing about takedown defense or submissions. You get the idea I'm trying to make. I will say that some are more PRACTICAL than others for MMA and street fighting. Think about it: there is a reason you see Muay Thai and BJJ more than anything else. It's very well-rounded and balanced. Yet the guys that incorporate the unique stuff are the guys that become champions. Lyoto Machida (Karate), Anderson Silva (Taekwondo), etc. -- they bring something new to the table; a strike that their opponent isn't used to defending against, for instance. But remember: one of the most important factors of training under specific styles is that you are training properly and realistically. If you're training for a MMA rules fight, then practice your TKD or Kung Fu in MMA sparring. You can't expect to practice one form and think you can beat someone who has mastered 3. As one of the Five Animal styles of Kung Fu, this martial art is based on imitating the movements of a snake. The style is characterized by its fluidity as is demonstrated in its coiling motions during defense and unpredictable whip-like attacks. But Snake Kung Fu’s most distinguishing feature is the snake-shaped hand which utilizes the finger tips to deliver pressure point strikes. Besides the main form, certain specific variations exist such as the Cobra or Viper. So here’s a compilation of some Snake Kung Fu fight scenes. Iko Uwais is an unbelievably-fast-punching Indonesian martial arts star who is capable of pummelling the bejeezus out of hordes of mooks and extras and stuntmen with whatever objects happen to be laying around the movie sets at the time they unleash him. He's the 2005 National Champion in the Indonesian martial art, Penchak Silat, a pretty badass fighting style that combines all the best parts of Thai kickboxing. The Indonesian actor and martial artist burst onto the scene with Merantau and had an even bigger breakthrough in The Raid. Headshot, from directors Timo Tjahjanto and Kimo Stamboel (collectively known as the Mo brothers, though they are not actual brothers), has Uwais doing what he does best — kicking ass and taking names — with spectacularly entertaining results. Many Martial Arts claim to teach self defense, while actually they are only teaching techniques and some of them very unrealistically. In order to understand whether a chosen Martial Art works for self defense, you need to look at a few different criteria. Which ones? We will cover this question in this Martial Arts Journey video. The video was inspired by thoughts shared by: Tony Blauer of SPEAR - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqIFBr_2N35wrfN0Fvk6YjQ Matt Thornton of SBG - https://www.youtube.com/user/sbgipdx Bruno Orozco of CMBTVS - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIK0d2hyATUxJlA90-jqx6A What is the best Self Defense Martial Art Many people start martial arts wanting to learn self defense. As one starts a practice, there may be some skepticism in a new practitioner weather the taught techniques actually work for self defense, yet various martial arts have developed elaborate justifications to convince a practitioner that their practice is effective, such as: “You need to train this martial art for many years to make it work for self defense”, or “When the time comes, your skills will naturally come into action”. Unfortunately these justifications are mainly based on false beliefs passed on from generation to generation. Having all these myths and lies in martial arts, it is difficult not only for a beginner to realize what techniques and training methods actually help a person learn applicable self defense, but we also often times see people investing decades and hundreds of hours training in a certain practice, learning elaborate, complex techniques and traditions, only eventually to learn that they never actually learned real self defense. Hi, my name is Rokas, and for these reasons in this Martial Arts Journey video, we will be taking a look at what really makes a martial art effective for self defense. When we think about self defense, most people first think of self defense techniques. Often times in their imagination they resemble some stylized kung fu movements, which were once seen in an action movie. These complex movements can be learned by training the same elaborate technique for hundreds of times with full attention and focus. Yet in reality, when a person is faced with potential violence, our brain goes into the fight-or-flight response, which in turn releases a surge of adrenaline. It is important to understand, that when we have a high level of adrenaline in our system, our mind and body do not function as usual. While adrenaline brings more energy to our muscles to raise the capacity of our ability to defend ourselves physically, some other effects of include: tunnel vision, when you only see what is in front of you and not what is around you. A sensation of your mind wandering or floating, making it hard to concentrate. Decreased coordination and difficulty to think clearly. All these factors have a dramatic, negative effect on our ability to perform complex motor skills, on which many martial arts techniques are based on. While we may be able to perform them with ease in our training environment - when faced with actual danger, there is a great possibility that all of our complex movements which we learned will not come up in the moment of an adrenaline surge and our body will not respond as we had planned in our training, making us incapable to defend, especially by using the techniques we invested in. That is not to say that complex motor skills will not work at all in a real self defense situation, but if your chosen martial art relies heavily on them, that may be one of the first signs of caution when questioning your martial arts effectiveness for self defense. Some complex motor skills may work though, yet whether they will depends not only on the techniques themselves, but also on the training method. This Brazilian martial art was developed as a method for West African slaves to practice and hide their indigenous combat from their colonial masters by disguising it as a form of dance. Using a variety of fast, unpredictable, acrobatic kicks, Capoeira emphasizes constant motion mainly through “ginga”, a lateral bobbing movement. Rather than being solely a type of self-defense, Capoeira as a game allows practitioners, or capoeristas, to engage in a sort of “dance-off” where they must individually perform and synchronize their moves with one another without hitting their opponent. This involves a circle of capoeristas called a “roda” who either clap and chant or play a musical instrument called a “berimbau” to maintain the flow and rhythm of the performance. Capoeira is now taught all over the globe and has been featured frequently in pop culture. Notable capoerista actors include Lateef Crowder, Mark Dacascos, and Wesley Snipes. I’m no expert on Capoeira but a fan of awesome fight choreography so I decided to delve a bit deeper and research some films/television series featuring Capoeira. So here’s a compilation of some Capoeira fight scenes. Although not normally thought of as "martial arts", the Western world has developed their own effective combat systems throughout the ages particularly what is referred to as "Historical European Martial Arts". The differences and similarities between the Eastern and Western approaches are fascinating and often overlooked in the larger context of studying "martial arts". While Eastern martial arts usually possess a spiritual or even religious foundation advocating certain ethical principles and ways of life, Western martial arts usually focus more on pure combat for sport, artistic preservation, and sometimes self-defense (originally for warfare). I’m not a martial arts expert but a fan of awesome fight choreography so I decided to delve a bit deeper and "research" some of the fighting styles used in certain fight scenes. List of movies and martial arts styles featured in order of appearance: 1. Fearless (Tiger Fist vs. Boxing, Qiang (Chinese Spear) Wushu vs. Lancing, & Jian (Chinese Straight Sword) Wushu vs. Fencing) 2. Ip Man 2 (Wing Chun, Hung Ga, & Monkey Fist vs. Boxing) 3. Game of Thrones (Qiang (Chinese Spear) Wushu vs. Great Sword) 4. The Protector (Muay Thai/Boran & Taekwondo vs. Capoeira) 5. The Legend is Born: Ip Man (Wing Chun vs. Boxing) 6. Undisputed 3 (Muay Thai vs. Dirty Boxing) 7. Dragon Blade (Dao (Chinese Saber) Wushu vs. Gladius) 8. True Legend (Drunken Fist vs. Boxing) 9. Born to Defense (Fanziquan vs. Boxing) 10. Hoero! Takken (Kyokushin Karate & Shorinji Kempo vs. Boxing) 11. My Rebellious Son (Jian (Chinese Straight Sword) Wushu vs. Fencing) 12. The Sino-Dutch War 1661 (Jian (Chinese Straight Sword) Wushu vs. Fencing)

Check Out Part 2: https://youtu.be/M7h1V5sFvAA Are you interested in learning a new martial arts in order to defend yourselves from them bullies? Well I suggest never trying any of these fighting styles unless you want to make your enemies laugh at you, while they are kicking your butt. There are always people out there that come up with new ideas, like fighting styles, religions, or lifestyles in order to make money from their clients, but I believe that some of these people that will be shown in this video seem to really believe that they actually have a legitimate way to defend themselves and fight. But these techniques are just dangerous, because the student doesn’t learn anything that will actually help them, it just creates a false sense of bravado that will lead to them picking a fight and getting hurt. I actually learned Tae Kwon Do and it turned out to be useless because the one I learned did not allow punches to the face, which is useless in a real fight, since that is the first thing you are going to see from your opponent and the first things you are going to try to do. What martial art is the best has been an endless debate between many and while there is no definitive answer, it wouldn’t hurt to compare the pros and cons of various practices to see which martial art has an advantage compared to others. To exercise our brains, in this Martial Arts Journey video we will be taking a look at “Comparing Best to Worst Martial Art”. Comparing Best to Worst Martial Arts While many questions and answers are subjective, it never hurts to develop our critical thinking by looking at various criteria and comparing it to each other. Before I begin calculating points dedicated to various martial arts and comparing them to each other, there are a few important points to mention. First of all as I am writing this script I do not know myself which martial art will prevail and I will try to be as objective, unbiased and versatile as much as I can in comparing the points. It would also be impossible to compare all existing martial arts since there are simply too many of them and also I have not tried them all, thus I will be choosing only some of the most popular martial arts and ones, which I am most familiar with personally. As for some of the chosen martial arts not everyone would call them martial arts, such as boxing, yet since many people choose between traditional Eastern martial arts and Western, often more sports based fighting practices, for the sake of interest I will include them. Last of all, many argue that MMA is not a martial art in itself as it is encompases various styles of fighting, yet regarding that there are plenty of gyms which offer MMA as a practice, thus once more, for the interest of comparison, I will add it to the list of compared martial arts. That being said, let us begin. The martial arts which will be compared are: MMA, Karate, Boxing, Wing Chun, Japanese Jiu Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Shaolin Kung Fu, Aikido, Judo, Muay Thai and Greco-Roman wrestling, which in total makes 11 different martial arts related practices. We will be looking at a list of 13 different criteria to compare them by ranging from effectiveness and variety of techniques, to philosophy and personal development benefits, which will be scored from 0 to maximum 3 points for each criteria. If the criteria will be negative, such as likeliness of brain damage, 0 to 3 points will be removed from the martial arts total points. Now that the rules are set, let us begin. Many people start martial arts wanting to learn to defend themselves, thus the first part of criteria list will be focused on this question, starting with striking effectiveness.
