The "Art" of Communication | Jimmy Nelson | TEDxInstitutLeRosey

25:31
Recording and communicating with tribes and peoples to produce remarkable photographs of cultures before they pass away. In 1987, after 10 years at a Jesuit boarding school in the North of England, Jimmy Nelson set off on his own to traverse the length of Tibet on foot. The journey lasted a year and upon his return his unique visual diary, featuring revealing images of a previously inaccessible Tibet, was published to wide international acclaim. In early 1994 he and his Dutch wife Ashkaine produced Literary Portraits of China, a 40 month project that took them to all the hidden corners of the newly opening People’s Republic. From 1997 onwards, Jimmy started accumulating images of remote and unique cultures photographed with a traditional 50-year-old plate camera and awards followed. International exhibitions and acclaim created the Before they Pass Away in 2010. Jimmy Nelson spoke at TEDx Amsterdam in 2013 and at TED Global in 2014. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Conversation Skills: What's your communication style?

15:00
Do you want to communicate better? Understand how people think? Find the best ways for you to learn English? In today's lesson, you will learn about the different ways in which people think. By understanding how people think, you will learn how to communicate with them effectively. There are three basic communication styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. I will teach you how to figure out what style of speaker a person is, and teach you how to speak with each type. Make sure you understood the lesson by taking the quiz. This lesson will not only help you with your English, but with all your communication! http://www.engvid.com/conversation-skills-whats-your-communication-style/ TRANSCRIPT Oh, poor E. Hi. James, from EngVid. You know, people see the world differently. We all do. I mean, what sounds good to you may not feel right for other people. And we also learn differently. What I want to do in this lesson today is teach you how to communicate more effectively. I want to teach you the three styles that people have when they communicate, how they communicate, and how you can use these styles -- understanding your own -- to learn English more effectively. Let's go to the board and take a look, shall we? We've got Mr. E. He doesn't seem to be so good today. Professor E, or whoever this guy is with the funky glasses, right? Like a doctor. Like Freud. "So how do you feel about it, Mr. E?" Mr. E says, "I don't like how it sounds. It just feels wrong." I can't see myself doing it. Now, each one of these things, they're different styles. There's a word called "modalities", which is a way of seeing or learning things, right? Modes, models. Now, he's talking about different ones. Sounding is for hearing. Feeling could be your hands or your body -- how does it feel? And seeing -- your eyes. We're going to look over here, now. And I'm going to give you the titles or the proper names we say when we talk about these things, okay? So when we talk about a person who is "visual", we mean they see -- with their eyes, of course. But what we're talking about is when they're thinking, they see pictures or movies. When you ask them a question, a picture appears in their eyes right away. When you say "the large, black dog", they see a dog, a large, black one. They tend to be like me -- they speak quickly. That's why I'm slowing down now. But you say something to me -- I see a picture, and I want to get it out of my head as quickly as possible because pictures are like a thousand words. Okay? Now, they like things to look good. Why am I telling you this? Well, if you understand how these people think, you'll understand how to communicate with them, right? So a visual person likes things looking good. They speak quickly, and they see pictures when they're speaking. That's why they speak so quickly to you or rapidly. Okay? What about an auditory person? "Auditory" comes from "audio". You know, your MP3 player? You like music? That's auditory -- with your ears. These people need clear speech. What that means is what I'm doing now is best for an auditory person. They need to hear clearly what you're saying or they don't understand you. It's not such a bad thing. We should all be a little bit more clear in our speech, especially when learning a language. They also need to manage sound level. What would happen is if I'm talking and they're talking and several people are talking, they're the people most likely to say, "Hey, guys. Shh! Calm down. Lower the volume." Because they can't concentrate because they need that clear speech. Okay? And what's the third thing we're going to talk about? Well, body. It's called "kinesthetic". Sometimes, that includes taste -- delicious! -- and smell. Okay? These people need really slow speech because they feel with their body. So the slow speech helps them to process the information, okay? They like to do things. They are what we call "hands on". They want to touch something or move something. They understand things when they're doing it. If you draw a picture like you would for the visual person, it won't make as much sense. And even if you just speak to them, they won't get it. But as soon as they touch it, they understand it. Okay? They like comfortable environments, something that makes them feel comfortable. So in each category or sense, these people like things to look good -- the visual ones. These people like to make the sounds nice for them. And these people like to be comfortable in their environment. The nice heat. The right chair. Okay? How does this help you with your English? Well, this isn't a beginner lesson. What we want to look at is how people learn and how we can speak to them so that your messages are understood more readily. Also, I'm going to show you how you can use it to help yourself learn. Are you ready?

Communication skills are important in every aspect of our lives. In simplest terms, communication is the act of transferring information from one person or place to another. People communicate in order to facilitate the spread of knowledge and share messages with one another. However, because people have different communication styles, sometimes conflict can ensue. You can read all the books on communication skills, but if you don’t actually practice them and do the work, you won’t make any progress. In my opinion, communication skills are critical to success in life, which is why it's imperative that you make it a priority to develop them. SBAR Basics Guide - http://amzn.to/2ji4rUZ Why is SBAR communication so critical? The Situation, Background, Assessment and Recommendation (SBAR) technique has become the Joint Commission's stated industry best practice for standardized communication in healthcare; effortlessly structuring critical information primarily for spoken delivery. Regular use of SBAR is an important part of any organization's Crew Resource Management (CRM) family of skills; helping caregivers function as effective team members while establishing a culture of quality, patient safety and high reliability. SBAR promotes quality and patient safety, primarily because it helps individuals communicate with each other with a shared set of expectations. Staff and physicians use SBAR to share patient information in a clear, complete, concise and structured format; improving communication efficiency and accuracy. The SBAR is a powerful tool that is used to improve the effectiveness of communication between individuals. It is easy to use and can help your staff learn the key components needed to send a complete message! Here are the key components of the SBAR: Situation: Clearly and briefly define the situation. For example, ‘Mr. Jones has multiple prescriptions of Coumadin in his home and he is unclear as to which ones he is supposed to take.’ Background: Provide clear, relevant background information that relates to the situation. In the example above, you should consider including the patient’s diagnosis, the prescribing physicians, and the dates and dosages of the medications. Assessment: A statement of your professional conclusion. Recommendation: What do you need from this individual? For example, ‘Please clarify which is the correct dose of Coumadin for Mr. Jones to take and which physician will be responsible for managing his anticoagulant therapy? This video looks at how our tone of voice in communication influences the way we are perceived including a look at our other nonverbal vocal cues and visual cues. Get the Free Download pdf Quick Guide to Professional Communication Skills: http://bit.ly/2K9Gile-QuickGuide When people say "tone" of voice, they often mean much more than the musical tonality of our voice. They often use the term tone to refer to our overall sound and the attitude, emotion, and shades of meaning our "tone" communicates. Typically, that involves or tone, volume, pacing, emphasis, and pauses. We hear those all at once. We really don't separate the tone. Our visual nonverbal cues also influence the way our tone of voice is perceived by others. 4 Ways To Talk To Anyone(HINDI) - How to improve communication skills in Hindi

07:06
We've all been there. You're talking to this person that you really really like, but just don't know how to keep the conversation flowing. Or maybe you're at a networking event and don't know what to say to people after you've said your hello. Whatever the case maybe, sometimes you simply run out of things to say. This is why I'll show you how to improve your communication skills in hindi. Now I'm usually more introverted, so this used to be a big problem for me. It's almost as if whatever comes in my mind is completely irrelevant to the conversation at hand, so I end up saying nothing at all. Or worse, I get this sort of weird performance anxiety where I feel like I *HAVE TO* say something clever, and I freeze up and don't say anything. After this, I learned how to improve communication skills in hindi. IN this video I'll show you how I got over this, and I'll share with you 4 tips so that you never run out of things to say. Now pay attention to this first point, as this is the mindset shift that will really make the biggest difference ever in your social skills, and it is this. Just lower the bar for what you think is "worthy" of conversation. It's just that simple, but it may not be that easy at first. We all have this self imposed image of perfectionism that we like to portray to the world. I can't say weird things, I'm this prim and proper person who runs a company. This is all a facade. The truth is, most of us are quirky and weird and don't really say clever stuff all the time. Watch the video to find out how to improve communication skills in hindi.

5 ways - How to speak confidently? | Improve Communication skills & Personality development

11:04
5 ways to master the art of speaking confidently | Improve Communication skills & Personality development video Blog : http://www.learnex.in/5-ways-master-art-communication-public-speaking-skills Congratulations to you for clicking on this Skillopedia video. My names is Michelle. Today we are learning how to master the art of communication or In other words the art of speaking in public. Communication in public is an art where you must be able to use the tools deftly in order to make your communication skills effective. Website : http://www.letstalkpodcast.com Facebook : http://www.facebook.com/letstalkpodcast CHOOSE WORDS WISELY Words have the power to destroy and build relationships. They decide the opinion that the listener develops of you. /if you have a habit to use negative words then you must cut down on them. Avoid using words like failure, hopeless, worthless and start adding positive words like acceptance, approval, success, hopeful etc. to your everyday vocabulary. Your words should be colorful and meaningful to keep the hearer hooked onto you. Slang words are a big “no” for professional conversations and so is slurring. EXPAND YOUR VOCABULARY A wide range of vocabulary helps an individual come across as learned and well-read. Start by reading vocabulary books or by watching our videos on vocabulary at Let’s Talk in order to improve your vocabulary. It’s suggested that difficult vocabulary is used with fluent speakers of English, for a lay person we should use easy to understand graded vocabulary. Keeping in mind, the pace of your speech also shouldn’t be too fast or too slow. A steady volume of speech is quite eluding and therefore take the listener on a roller coaster ride of communication by increasing and decreasing your volume naturally. EMOTIONS WHILE SPEAKING IS VITAL Use your emotions while communicating to have an engrossing conversation. The key here is not to let your emotions spill out of the bag way too much. While exercising control over your feelings, the right emotion should be expressed in a conversation. If you’re an emotional person and get stretched to the point of wet eyes, do not hinder yourself from expressing your feelings. A person who can shed tears is stronger and not weaker because they are sensitive to their own feelings while sympathetic to that of others. If you are serious about a matter, an intense expression (not anger) is alright as it would help the listener understand the gravity of the situation. If you laugh too much, continue as the way you are because this shows that you do not let difficult circumstances take a toll on you. CREATE A PUNCH WITH PERFECT ENUNCIATION Enunciation is different from pronunciation; it means to speak “clearly”. What is required is not to slur while speaking but you don’t have to speak every word distinctly which is actually wrong. So try to speak clearly even though not distinctly. Through correct enunciation you can add a punch to your conversation. MAKE USE OF BODY LANGUAGE APPROPRIATELY This tip will help you master the art of “non-verbal” communication i.e. body language. What you don’t say while communicating is as important as what you say. Hands and arms: Stiff hands reflect arrogance. It’s better to keep your hands loose and use them for making a point whenever needed. Eyes: Look into the eyes of the person you’re talking to. If you’re looking elsewhere it shows indifference. Position: You can sit while presenting in a meeting to show a casual attitude. However if you stand while presenting it denotes strength and passion.

Reflective Listening: Essential Communication Skills

08:35
Communication Skills- Do you have them? Active listening is an essential skill but most of us stink at listening. And when the person talking is struggling, instead of focusing on listening, we often try to help by throwing out quick-fixes that make things worse. Reflective listening is a pretty simple and really powerful way to help people heal and work through problems. Seriously. I spent a year learning this skill in grad school and the next 7 reminding myself to use it because it's one of my most effective tools. Skillopedia - 07 tricks to sound confident while speaking (Soft skills & Communication skills)

10:47
Skillopedia - 07 tips and tricks to sound confident while speaking ( Soft skills & Communication skills video) Blog : http://www.learnex.in/tips-to-sound-more-confident-while-speaking-soft-skills-and-communication-skills Another fabulous Skillopedia video from from the soft skills and communication skills series to learn tips and tricks to sound more confident while speaking. During the course of conversation, there are several tricks you can use to make your words or voice sound more authoritative or surer and to address your audience with greater overall confidence. Here are a few of them. Facebook : http://www.facebook.com/skillopediaone Website : http://www.letstalkacademy.in Speak more slowly. Some of us speak faster when we're nervous. Some of us are naturally fast talkers. Speaking too quickly can show a lack of confidence. While speaking quickly, you're more likely to make mistakes in your language or pronunciation. Focus on speaking more slowly and clearly. This will make it easier for the other person to understand what you are saying and make you appear from confident and sure. Use effective pauses Now you are already speaking clearly and slowly; also use pauses at various points in the conversation to create greater impact .Pausing for two or three seconds will add more weight to your previous sentence and help you make your point effectively .It gives you a chance to collect your thoughts in order to continue speaking further and makes you appear sure & confident. Avoid irrelevant stories Sometimes when we are nervous we talk too much. We end up telling stories or incidents that are unrelated to the conversation at hand; avoid doing this. Stick to the point, keep it short and simple. This will make you seem very cool and confident. Use a deeper tone of voice Try using a deeper more base tone of voice while speaking as it will give your voice more authority and confidence. As much as you can, practice speaking in a deeper tone of voice. Practice will make you sound natural and not forced. A deeper tone can make a real positive difference. Maintain a confident posture Whether you're sitting or standing at work, try to improve your posture. Stand or sit up straight with your shoulders back, and keep your head held high. This will make you more confident, and will help you feel more confident as well. Using the correct posture will also help you breathe better and hence you will be able to speak better Use hand gestures effectively Focus on using your hand gestures only for most impact words or statements and try to keep your movements controlled .using too many hand gestures or just randomly waving your hands can make you appear confused and out of control. Practice, practice & more practice. There are always going to be those important conversations which will decide the direction of your work or career; which can make or break a deal. So it is wise to practice conversing regularly in order to become an expert. Standing in front of the mirror and practicing while looking into your own eyes is extremely useful in building confidence. We hope this Skillopedia video from the soft skills and Communication skills series has helped you learn tips and tricks to sound more confident while speaking. Communication in the 21st Century: Is It What You Say, Not How You Say It? | Vivian Ta | TEDxUTA

10:17
Nonverbal behaviors have historically been regarded as more important in communication than verbal behaviors. This talk will argue how and why verbal behaviors, rather than nonverbal behaviors, are most critical in today's digital society. Vivian P. Ta is a PhD student at the University of Texas at Arlington where she conducts research in social and personality psychology. Specifically, her research focuses on examining the role of latent semantic similarity in a variety of interactions, including romantic relationships, friends, strangers, face-to-face interactions, and computer-mediated interactions. She is a fellow of the National Science Foundation’s LSAMP BD program, president of UT Arlington’s Graduate Student Senate, and a former intern at Match.com. Effective Communication Skills Training: Concise, Clear, Confident (Part 1 of 7) | Long-windedness

05:29
This 7-part free mini-course teaches you effective communication skills: how to communicate concisely, clearly, and confidently. Lesson 1 goes after the common underlying problem of long-windedness for more effective communication skills in the workplace and daily conversation. http://www.communicationskillscoach.com In step-by-step fashion, you'll learn to develop effective communication skills for the workplace and everyday life. Main Point: Long-windedness is a key enemy of effective communication skills and clear communication. Most people assume that if they can talk a lot, then they must be a good communicator. This is simply not true. Long-windedness creates very bad impressions in professional settings. For effective workplace communication, you must make long-windedness your enemy and learn how to speak clearly. 1. It is important to get to the bottom of why you may be long-winded. Are you insecure? Do you like the attention? Are you to self-focused? Nervous? All the tips in the world will not undue long-winded communication if you have not resolved why you sometimes get overly talkative. 2. Gauge your long-windedness. Are you very concise or very long-winded or a little of both. Set a goal to lean toward concise communication in most situations. 3. Commit to concise communication. Conciseness is the foundation of clear and confident communication. This is true in social settings but especially important when seeking effective communication skills for the workplace. The first step in this 7-part mini-course is simple. Realize that long-winded communication will prevent most people from becoming the high-quality communicator they desire to be. Saying What You Mean - A Children's Book About Communication Skills

11:29
Teaching effective communication skills is largely ignored in society. Although we are taught to read and write, the many other ways we communicate are ignored or glossed over. Use of body language, hands, facial expressions, and tone of voice are all part of effective communication. Learning to pair all the ways we communicate honestly and openly from a young age will help children develop mutual respect toward one another and authority figures. And, ahem, most adults I know could stand to review (or learn) these principles. This charming book written by Joy Wilt and illustrated by Hergie (Ernie Hergenroeder) is from the "Ready-Set-Grow Series". I grew up with these books and was thrilled when I found this one at a thrift store. I couldn't wait to produce this video!

How to speak fluently during interviews? –Interview Tips,Communication Skills,Confidence Building

04:45
Have you ever thought that you don’t stand a chance of getting that job you desire if:  You sometimes get stuck for words when speaking in English;  Using the right English tenses during a conversation or  You don’t know how to sound professional during important events such as job interviews and meetings Don’t worry! Today we would be providing you some great tips in which you can clear your interview rounds at ease. Now, What to be done Before the Interview : • Review the oral rating scale so that you know what the examiner will be checking for. • Practice beforehand by having a friend or colleague interview you with questions found on our recommended websites or other resources. You may want to record this and have a native English speaker listen to it with you to identify ways that you could have answered more naturally. During the Interview: • Relax: You are not expected to be perfect - just to be fluent enough to function easily in an English speaking office. • Keep talking: Try to give more than a 3 word answer to each question. The examiner wants to hear you talk more than the interviewer. The examiner cannot easily give you a score if you only say 'yes' and 'no'. • Speak slowly, audibly and clearly. If you tend to speak fast when you're nervous, try to speak slower. You'll be understood better. If you usually have a soft voice, make an effort to speak louder. It's impossible for an examiner to give you a score if she/he can't hear you. • Feel free to take control of the conversation. Interviewers have been advised to avoid talking about politics or other sensitive topics - but have not been given exact questions to ask. Thus, the content is not as important as your appearing 'fluent' - and a fluent conversationalist sometimes changes the subject • Don't memorize - or give a lecture. Remember that this is meant to be a conversation, not a recording of you reading, saying something you memorized or giving a lecture to your interviewer. In my view, there are a few other things you can do to improve your verbal facility, which includes: • Practice reading a short passage or an article from your daily newspapers or magazines. Tape-record it, so that you will know where to make adjustments and corrections. You can even invite a good buddy to listen so as to give you candid feedback. • Randomly pick up a photo or picture, and proceed to articulate as much as you can, about what you see in it • Every time after you have finished watching a movie or reading a story book, do your best to articulate the key ideas and salient points to yourself. As usual, you can tape-record and/or get a friend to listen. • Read a lot. Newspapers, novels, your textbooks, watch youtube videos etc. If you don't understand a word then internet is your best friend .. search for it and hear how it is pronounced. • Think in English (or the language you want to learn) • Always participate in the extracurricular activities even if its for small part , this way you can talk to more people. • Go for seminars and watch the speaker body language and try to ape him..Slowly you will know your style what works for you. At last we would summarize as don't be too concerned about your stuttering. Just focus on your objective to practice speaking fluently, and proceed to speak naturally. Yes, it takes an iota of personal courage, but that's the process of natural learning. Also remember, fear is essentially a perceived notion, and always a transient event. It will pass.
