Floating in the Dead Sea ...You Can't Sink! - Interesting Facts

02:02
The Dead Sea (Hebrew: יָם הַמֶּלַח, Yam ha-Melah, "Sea of Salt", also Hebrew: יָם הַמָּוֶת, Yam ha-Mavet, "The Sea of Death", and Arabic: البحر الميت‎‎ About this sound Al-Bahr al-Mayyit (help·info)), also called the Salt Sea, is a salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and Palestine to the west. Its surface and shores are 429 metres (1,407 ft) below sea level, Earth's lowest elevation on land. The Dead Sea is 304 m (997 ft) deep, the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. With 34.2% salinity (in 2011), it is 9.6 times as salty as the ocean, and one of the world's saltiest bodies of water. This salinity makes for a harsh environment in which plants and animals cannot flourish, hence its name. The Dead Sea is 50 kilometers (31 mi) long and 15 kilometers (9 mi) wide at its widest point. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley and its main tributary is the Jordan River. The Dead Sea water has a density of 1.24 kg/liter, which makes swimming similar to floating. Biblical period- Dwelling in caves near the Dead Sea is recorded in the Hebrew Bible as having taken place before the Israelites came to Canaan, and extensively at the time of King David. Just northwest of the Dead Sea is Jericho. Somewhere, perhaps on the southeastern shore, would be the cities mentioned in the Book of Genesis which were said to have been destroyed in the time of Abraham: Sodom and Gomorra (Genesis 18) and the three other "Cities of the Plain", Admah, Zeboim and Zoar (Deuteronomy 29:23). Zoar escaped destruction when Abraham's nephew Lot escaped to Zoar from Sodom (Genesis 19:21-22). Before the destruction, the Dead Sea was a valley full of natural tar pits, which was called the vale of Siddim. King David was said to have hidden from Saul at Ein Gedi nearby. In Ezekiel 47:8-9 there is a specific prophecy that the sea will ".. be healed and made fresh", becoming a normal lake capable of supporting marine life. A similar prophecy is stated in Zechariah 14:8, which says that "Living waters will go out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea (likely the Dead Sea) and half to the western sea (the Mediterranean)..." Greek and Roman period- Aristotle wrote about the remarkable waters. The Nabateans and others discovered the value of the globs of natural asphalt that constantly floated to the surface where they could be harvested with nets. The Egyptians were steady customers, as they used asphalt in the embalming process that created mummies. The Ancient Romans knew the Dead Sea as "Palus Asphaltites" (Asphalt Lake). King Herod the Great built or rebuilt several fortresses and palaces on the western bank of the Dead Sea. The most famous was Masada, where in 70 CE a small group of Jewish zealots fled after the fall of the destruction of the Second Temple. The zealots survived until 73 CE, when a siege by the X Legion ended in the deaths by suicide of its 960 inhabitants. Another historically important fortress was Machaerus (מכוור), on the eastern bank, where, according to Josephus, John the Baptist was imprisoned by Herod Antipas and died. Also in Roman times, some Essenes settled on the Dead Sea's western shore; Pliny the Elder identifies their location with the words, "on the west side of the Dead Sea, away from the coast ... [above] the town of Engeda" (Natural History, Bk 5.73); and it is therefore a hugely popular but contested hypothesis today, that same Essenes are identical with the settlers at Qumran and that "the Dead Sea Scrolls" discovered during the 20th century in the nearby caves had been their own library. Josephus identified the Dead Sea in geographic proximity to the ancient Biblical city of Sodom. However, he referred to the lake by its Greek name, Asphaltites. Various sects of Jews settled in caves overlooking the Dead Sea. The best known of these are the Essenes of Qumran, who left an extensive library known as the Dead Sea Scrolls. The town of Ein Gedi, mentioned many times in the Mishna, produced persimmon for the temple's fragrance and for export, using a secret recipe. "Sodomite salt" was an essential mineral for the temple's holy incense, but was said to be dangerous for home use and could cause blindness. The Roman camps surrounding Masada were built by Jewish slaves receiving water from the towns around the lake. These towns had drinking water from the Ein Feshcha springs and other sweetwater springs in the vicinity. Byzantine period- Intimately connected with the Judean wilderness to its northwest and west, the Dead Sea was a place of escape and refuge. The remoteness of the region attracted Greek Orthodox monks since the Byzantine era. Their monasteries, such as Saint George in Wadi Kelt and Mar Saba in the Judean Desert, are places of pilgrimage.

Most MYSTERIOUS Ocean Facts!

11:50
Check out these top unexplained mysteries of the deep ocean. From strange sounds captured in the deep sea by hydrophones such as the bloop, the train, and julia, to gigantic whirlpools, biggest underwater falls and the milky bioluminescent sea phenomenon. Are deep sea monsters living deep in the ocean? Subscribe For New Videos! http://goo.gl/UIzLeB Watch our "12 Historical Treasures In The Middle East DESTROYED!" video here: https://youtu.be/Nt9mWUpTp1U Watch our "Most HAUNTED Places In The World!" video here: https://youtu.be/h9elrDhft9w Watch our "Most DANGEROUS Religious Cults Ever!" video here: https://youtu.be/VTD1qabI3v0 9. Underwater Falls Voted one of the most beautiful places on Earth, Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean. On the Southwestern tip of the island you will find a fascinating illusion. When viewed from above, a runoff of sand and silt deposits creates the impression of an ‘underwater waterfall’. But did you know there are actually real underwater waterfalls? Seven waterfalls have been discovered deep underwater. The tallest waterfall on Earth is not Angel Falls, but an underwater waterfall called Denmark Strait Cataract located in the Atlantic ocean between Greenland and Iceland. It is the world's highest underwater waterfall, with water falling almost 11,500 feet and carries 175 million cubic feet of water per second. It is caused due to temperature differences in the water on either side of the strait. Cold water is denser than warm water. And the eastern side of the strait is a lot colder than the western side. So when the waters meet, the cold water sinks below the warmer water, creating a strong downward flow, which is considered a waterfall. And it's not just waterfalls that are under the ocean. There are huge secret rivers, complete with rapids and islands that flow down the sea shelves out into the desert plains creating river banks and flood plains. Here's a picture of the river Cenote Angelita under the sea of Mexico. These salty rivers carry sediments and minerals and could be vital in sustaining life. The world's sixth largest river, by volume, is below the Black Sea. It is 350 times larger than the Thames and 150 feet deep in places. 8. Milky Sea Phenomenon For over 400 years, sailors told tales of a mysterious event that takes place far out in the Indian Ocean. They would come across miles and miles of milky glowing waters, sometimes stretching as far as the eye could see. In 2005, a group of scientists led by Dr. Steven Miller of the Naval Research Laboratory in Monterey, Calif., decided to take a closer look at this story to see if it was true. They managed to register about 235 observations and get a satellite image that showed an area of low lighting in the Indian Ocean about the size of Connecticut. Their samples that they collected indicated the presence of a type of bioluminescent bacteria in the water, known as Vibrio harveyi. This isn't the same kind of bacteria that you might see in waves that use their bright light to ward off predators. This bioluminescent bacteria may actually use light to attract fish, since its favorite place to live is inside a fish's gut. Scientists' guess is that since they only emit a very faint light on their own, they have to gather together to make an impact. Their collective glow can grow to massive, milky sea proportions when their numbers swell to a huge amount -- think 40 billion trillion. They may also congregate to colonize algae. Sounds like a party! It is still only a guess since Dr. Miller and his colleagues haven't determined exactly what causes the bacteria to gather. 7. Unexplained sounds Of course dark, creepy fog can make you jump at anything that goes bump in the night. But what about things that go "bloop" in the sea? With names like "The Bloop," "Train" and "Julia," the sounds have been captured by hydrophones, or underwater microphones, monitored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The decidedly nonspooky nicknames for these sounds do little to dispel the mystery surrounding them. In 1997, NOAA hydrophones 3,000 miles apart picked up one of the loudest sounds ever recorded off the southern coast of South America: the Bloop (which sounds exactly like its name, a bloop). The Bloop mimics marine animal sounds in some ways, but if it were some kind of sea creature it would have to be almost the size of the Eiffel tower for that sound to be heard from 3,000 miles away. So what made the sound? It's anyone's guess but deep-sea monsters aside, NOAA holds the most likely explanation for The Bloop is that it was the sound of a large iceberg fracturing. Sure.... Another weird noise known as Julia sounds almost like someone whining or maybe even singing under water. The eastern equatorial Pacific autonomous array (the fancy name for the network of hydrophones) picked up this strange sound that lasted 15 seconds in 1999.

The Giant Sea Bass was fished to near extinction. Learn about this and 19 other facts about this big fish. 20 interesting facts about the little known Giant Sea Bass, covering its cannibalistic diet, its range off the U.S Pacific coast, its surprising bursts of speed, its history being overfished to near local extinction, and its recent comeback to healthy population levels. The Giant Sea Bass is a Megacarnivore weighing 400 pounds living right off the coast of California, yet we know relatively little about it. Weird, right? Let's shed a bit of light on this big fish. All footage taken of this apex predator was while scuba diving in the Kelp Beds of Casino Point at Catalina Island using a Gopro hero3. The Giant Sea Bass, also called the Black Bass, is a fish living off California and can easily be seen scuba diving Casino Point at Catalina Island. Sport fishing and spear fishing almost drove this fish out of the waters off the Pacific Coast, but it always remained in other parts of the Pacific Ocean. NATO in the Black Sea: How will Russia Respond

04:11
NATO in the Black Sea: How will Russia Respond - NATO plans to deploy warships to the Black Sea to ensure safe passage for Ukrainian vessels through the Kerch Strait, effectively controlled by Russia. If the Kremlin allows such transit, NATO and Ukraine will doubtlessly see that as a sign of Russian weakness. The Kerch Strait, as well as the whole Crimean Peninsula, is a de-facto part of Russia, and any unauthorized passage through Russian territorial waters would be a clear violation of Russian sovereignty. NATO and Ukraine, on the other hand, never recognized the Russian annexation of Crimea, and therefore they claim they have the right to freely access the Sea of Azov through the Kerch Strait. Black Sea Timelapse - A week in Turkey

02:25
The Black Sea region of Turkey is what you would get if you crammed the American Northwest, the Swiss Alps, the Italian coast, the Big Sky of the Canadian Rockies, the deserts of Egypt, and Versailles into a single strip of land on the Anatolian peninsula. We spent just a few days there, and in that time, we got to visit Ataturk's palace, we got to go whitewater rafting, we got to watch traditional dancing at Akçaabat, we watched the sun rise from Michael Pass, and we visited waterfalls, tea plantations, and monasteries. We put together this timelapse of our trip to the region. Keep this in mind while you're watching it: this was a four-day trip. There's no other place on earth where you can see so many different amazing things in so short an amount of time. Find more great content at http://www.matadornetwork.com

Full Documentary | Georgia & The Great Caucasus

51:58
Full documentary about Georgia, this country is located in the Caucasus, along the black sea. It is a country with European vocation and western spirit with great landscape and cultural variety. Georgia. The secret in the Caucasus Georgia has protected its artistic heritage and been able to maintain the vibrancy of its unique traditions. It has conserved a biodiversity greater than that of some continents, and has a magnetism which draws people back to visit over and over again. Although as small as Switzerland, Georgia is big in all aspects; a progressive nation, European in attitude and Western in spirit; a real Caucasian country with the joy of the Mediterranean. The vast vineyards of the Eastern Region of Kakheti, home to the largest wineries in the nation, are a clear illustration of this passion. In Georgia, there are a considerable number of grape varieties, more than anywhere else in the world. In Kakheti, almost everything revolves around wine. Proof of this is the XVI century wine cellar in Velistsikhe, in which the traditional “kvevri” are still used: clay barrels buried underground that maintain a constant temperature to ensure optimal fermentation. Tbilisi (tiflis), founded as a fortress-city in the V century, is the nation’s capital, its largest city and has been admired by famous people such as Leon Tolstoy and Alexander Dumas. Every corner of Tbilisi is quite captivating. Its bewitching spell is cast over the whole of this safe and friendly metropolis in which guests are considered a “gift from God”. At the end of the harvest, colourful folkloric celebrations take place in the wine making areas. The fertile Valley of Alazani, in the Region of Kakheti, is renowned because of the excellence of its grapes and because it is the source of outstanding wines such as Khindzmarauli and Gurdjani. Sighnaghi is one of the smallest towns in the country, but it has the second longest wall in the world, after China, also known as “the city of love” is also celebrated for its renowned grape harvest. The Tusheti National Reserve is one of the most beautiful areas of Georgia. Vashlovani National Park, in the south-eastern part of the country, has a semi-desert ecosystem and is an excellent example of the varied bio-diversity to be found in Georgia. One of the 13 Assyrian Holy Fathers who arrived in Georgia in order to strengthen Christianity, David Gareja, is buried here, and on his tomb there is a stone that symbolizes the one that the distinguished Patriarch brought in his journey from the Holy Land. Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is in the centre of the country and it constitutes 1% of the territory of Georgia. Borjomi-Kharagauli, surrounded by the magical atmosphere of the Lower Caucasus, is the most visited Park in Georgia and has a large number of recreational activities on offer. In 1830, it was rumoured that springs from the Borjomi-Kharagauli Nature Reserve contained healing properties, and 60 years later, the first bottling plant of the now world-famous Borjomi water, was created. It is unique because of its naturally mineralized hydro carbonated sodium and therapeutic qualities. Shatili is located on the narrow pass of Arghuni, on the northern slope of the Great Caucasus. Sixty percent of Georgian territory are mountains. There a lots of fantastic opportunities for all kind of people who like nature, who like mountains. There are five peaks in the Caucasus in Georgia over 5000 meters, which gives really great opportunities for the amateur climbers. Apart from mountaineering these mountains give brilliant opportunities just for those who like nature, so you can do two or three weeks continuous tracks in a totally wild environment, plus there are lots of opportunities for rafting, canoeing, canyoning or any mountain activities. Georgia has two ski resorts: Bakuriani, to the south of Borjomi, at an altitude of 1,700 metres has conditions that are ideal for family skiing. Gudauri, in the Upper Caucasus, at 2,000 metres, has steep slopes which will satisfy the most extreme athletes.
Sea Urchin Facts: 18 Facts about Sea Urchins

04:16
Here are 18 facts about Sea Urchins to help gain a better understanding of these incredible creatures. They are a fascinating species far different from any other species we know, and here we delve into the wonder of these wonderful creatures. Synopsis There are around 200 species of sea urchins that are found across oceans around the world Sea urchins are found in warmer waters on ocean floors close to coral reefs They are a threatened species due to overfishing and pollution They range in size from between 1.2 to 3.9 inches in diameter. They have globe like shape which is covered in long spines and their bodies have a radial symmetry. They are protected by a shell formed of bony plates providing protection for the softer inner organs. They vary in colour depending in the species of the sea urchin. However the majority are black, brown, purple, red or green in color. They have five rows of paired feet on the underside of their body. These feet have suckers in them which means they can grip the ocean floor. Amongst the spines on their bodies are claw like structures which are known as pedicellariae that are used for protection against predators and also to collect food. There are species of sea urchin that also have spikes that are filled with venom They have a unique type of mouth called "Aristotle's lantern". The mouth has five sharp teeth which they use to drill holes in rocks They are omnivores by nature consuming both animals and plant life such as algae sea weed plankton and Other orgainc mattet The main predators of sea urchins are humans sunflower stars crabs fish birds and Sea urchins mate in the spring time and reproduce by releasing eggs and sperm cells in to the water in a process called external fertilization. the Fertilized egg will then go through a larval stage before it becomes a grown adult. Whilst the sea urchin is in its larval stage It will swim with other types of tiny creatures as part of zooplankton Sea urchins live up to 30 years. In fact the red sea urchin lives up to 200 years making it the longest living creature Sea urchins are not aggressive creatures however if they are touched most sea urchins will try to defend themselves using their spines and some species have spines that can pierce a divers suit. Some species like thr purple sea urchin, have an another defense mechanism called thepedicellarines which are tiny, jaw-like structures which clasp onto a diver's skin and inject a powerful poison. They are nestled down between re spines and are difficult to come into contact with unless the diver impales them self on it

Sea Sponge Facts: 10 facts about Sea Sponges

02:27
Here are 10 facts about sea sponges to help gain a better understanding of this fascinating creature of the deep sea. The corresponding post is here http://goo.gl/0u3eYy Synopsis 10. Sea sponges are animals which neither have neither a central nervous system of a brain. 9. They are found on the floor of the ocean attaching them leaves to solid rocks. They do not have the ability move around 8. Sea sponges appear as dark in water as they have a dark membrane that covers them which is like a skin for them. This gives them good cover for the skeleton. 7. They are able to reproduce by coupling up with other sea sponges. A male sperm is ejected by the male and is caught by the female and the fertilization of her eggs begins. When they are ready tiny larvae are ejected and they settle on the ocean floor and will grow into sea sponges 6. They feed by consuming water, ocean particles and plankton and then filtering the water out and swallowing the food that they need 5. Sea sponges get their oxygen from the flowing water 4. Around the world there are around 5000 species of sea sponge that exist 3. They have amazing powers of regeneration and have the ability to reform parts of the bodies that get broken off. Even more mind blowing The pieces that are broken off can also settle somewhere else and form into a clone of their parent sponge 2. When they are harvested, those collecting them leave the roots intact so that they can regenerate and grow back to their original form 1. When they are not harvested they have a lifespan of around 10 years in the wild.

Facts about the Sea Turtle

03:59
Welcome to another episode of Natural World Facts! This fact file is all about Sea Turtles in the series Reptiles and Amphibians. - Brief Overview: Turtles are among the oldest groups of reptilians, having evolved millions of years ago. They can be found all over the world and inhabit almost every type of climate. There are seven different species of sea turtle, all of which vary in size and shape. The largest marine turtle is the leatherback. It can grow up to 7 feet (2 meters) long and weighs up to 2,000 lbs. (900 kilograms). The average lifespans of sea turtles can vary from 30 to 100 years, depending on the species. - Appearance: The appearance of marine turtles varies between species. The green sea turtle has a wide, smooth carapace which is brown or olive in colour, depending on its habitat. It is named after the greenish colour of its skin. The leatherback turtle has a rubbery, black shell while all other sea turtles have hard, bony shells. Ridges along its carapace help give it a more streamlined and hydrodynamic structure. Depending on the species, sea turtles colouring can range from olive-green, yellow, greenish-brown, reddish-brown, or black. All species of marine turtles have four flippers to help them swim, unlike tortoises or land turtles which have thick stubby legs for moving on land. - Diet: Sea turtles are omnivores, which means they eat both meat and vegetation, although their diet varies between species. Their diet consists of shrimp, seaweed, crabs, jellyfish, sponges, algae and mollusks. - Habitat: Sea turtles can be found in all the worlds oceans. The Kemp's Ridley turtle usually can be found in the Gulf of Mexico. The Flatback turtle inhabits the ocean around Australia, while the leatherback swims in every ocean on the planet. Green sea turtles and loggerhead turtles tend to stick to tropical and subtropical coastal waters. - Breeding: In the mating season, females and males migrate to the same beach where they were born, using the magnetic fields of the Earth as their guide. The migrations can be over 1,400 miles (2,253 kilometers) long. Sea turtles lay their eggs in clutches of 70 to 190 eggs. Females lay their clutches in holes they have dug in the beach. Once they have laid the eggs, they cover them in sand and return to the sea. Once the eggs hatch, the babies will dig their way out of their hole. Once free, the juveniles hurry to the safety of the sea to avoid being cooked by the sun or eaten by predators. - Status: The Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle is listed as critically endangered on the IUCN red list of threatened species, but the leatherback is listed as vulnerable. Some of the biggest threats to sea turtles include; oil spills, habitat loss (due to coastal development), accidental catching and poaching.
