How to Draw a Figure | Fashion Sketching

04:35
Watch more How to Draw Fashion Sketches videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/501928-How-to-Draw-a-Figure-Fashion-Sketching Learn how to draw a figure for a fashion sketch from fashion designer Garo Sparo in this Howcast video. All right. So let's draw a figure. One thing I always start out with a pencil, because you can always erase it, and it's a good way to just get the basis going. So I always start with the head. Just think about proportion as you're doing it. The head, then the neck. We do a straight line under the neck. A good trick is to make an X here for the body. And it's great that we're doing this in pencil, as I said before, because all of this can go away later. From here, we work with a lot of elongated triangles. I'm going have this girl have her hand on her hip. So I'm doing these elongated triangles, even a little triangle for the hand, because you're going to smooth it out later. We'll give her a little arm, hanging down. It can even cross into the hand, as I just did. We'll give her some legs, and you basically segment the legs into triangles. This is how you establish the kneecaps, you do like little inverted triangle that way. And even a little inverted triangle for the foot, as well. All right. Now we go in and we smooth it all out. She kind of has a short neck, but I'm not that concerned, I can always erase that and fix it, so whatever. Basically drawing her outer silhouette now. I'll give her some bust, give her some hips. This is such a great trick because everybody knows how to draw a triangle, and then you're just smoothing over, smoothing over. She's turning out on the curvier side, but I can always fix that later as well. I'll give her her feet. Which I probably want her in high heels. All right. So, once you've gotten this process down, you've gotten it all smoothed out, you're happy with this, you're happy with that, and in fashion illustration you always elongate the form. And the reason why is you have more room to render the clothing. And that is why we make them so tall and lanky. It gives us more space to render details. Okay, now I go in with my pen. I like a nice roller pen, you can use felt tip, whatever you like. And I ink it all in. I hate drawing hands, but I will give a good attempt for you. I'll just give her like a weird mitten, but whatever, you can fix that later. That's why we have White-Out. It's never a bad idea just to put her hands behind her body, because it's all about the clothes, it's really not about her hands. And even if I'm doing these lines kind of feathery, you can always go over it again later with a thicker pen and really tighten it up. I'll give her some calves, a foot, and I'll have her have some high-heeled shoes on. She's pivoting her foot out. I'll lose this calf on this side and give her a calf on that side that tells me that her foot is being pivoted out. I'll give her a crotch. All right, so I've done the basic structure, so now I go in with my eraser and I get rid of all of the pencil. That arm is not pretty, but whatever, I can fix that later. So after a few little corrections, she'll be good to go, you can scan her into your computer. And that's how you draw a figure.

My art materials to draw fashion sketches | Justine Leconte

This video shows you the art supplies that I use to draw fashion sketches: SKETCHING: HB and 2B grey pencils (I forgot to mention the erasers: a regular one, one that has a thin tip and a kneaded eraser which doesn’t leave residues on the sheet of paper) Graphite for quick sketching Charcoal pencil for the shadowing and to get really black backgrounds Ink pens (PIGMA 005, 05 and 1 // FABER-CASTELL Small, Medium & Bold) Fixative (either from the art supplies store or a simple hairspray) COLORING: Markers: Chartpak AD / Copic / Prismacolor (several colors + darker shades of those colors, warm and cold greys, several black tones, several skin tones and a blender) Color pencils: a regular box of colors will do the job (but you need white, black, grey and a skin tone) PAPER: Sketchbook in a format that fits your pre-made croquis, slightly see-through Marker paper (bleedproof) in a larger format. How to do fashion sketches step by step

06:34
I'm Ioana Avram, fashion designer. Welcome to my Fashion teaching channel where you will find design videos starting from basic, easy level ( for beginners ) until advanced level. Follow my advices regarding the hand draw: anatomy studies, fashion poses, figures and croquis, learn about style and craft, fabrics and how to create garments. I love painting and sketching, I like fabrics and fashion magazines and especially pencil, ink and watercolor technique. I believe anyone can draw after practicing a while because all you need is work, work, work and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy. :) I made this channel to prove that it's ok to have talent, but not necessary. Through my one of a kind technique you will see how easy it will be to draw from now on. You will learn more about fashion and everything related to it: composition, shading, textures, different techniques and especially learn how to draw fashion sketches all by yourself. I will post new videos each Thursday so don't forget to subscribe. I will do my best to answer all comments. Ask anything you want, and feel free to leave any suggestions for future videos! All are taken into consideration. For more info visit my website fashion-teaching.com. Thank you and take care! FAQ: 1. What materials do you use for your drawings? ****************************************************** I use Toison d'Or or Koh-I-Noor pencils ( from 4B to 8B), Copic markers, Derwent coloured pencils, Canson paper or Fabriano paper, Factis eraser, metal pencil sharper and Winsor and Newton watercolors and ink. 2. Did you go to any art school or academy? ****************************************************** Yes, I studied design and fashion design ( for 4 years) at the University of Arts and Design in Cluj, Romania, Europe. I had a scholarship in Katowice, Poland and another one in Coburg, Germany and a course attended with Gary Tu - a well-known fashion illustrator from Taipei, Taiwan. 3.Where do you get your inspiration? ****************************************************** Basically I am very interested in any image and text that could grab my attention: fashion albums, history of art, books I read, movies I see...In fact, i will share below all my sources of inspiration. Find all my inspirational folders here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/397137153755499/photos/ 4. Do you have any links or books you can recommend? ****************************************************** Definitely I would recommend Gottfried Bammes' Anatomy, Barcsay's Anatomy and David Downton's illustrations that you will find here: http://www.daviddownton.com/ and here: http://instagram.com/daviddownton 5. How long have you been drawing? ****************************************************** 30 years ago some desperate parents interdicted their 3 years old child to use pencils to draw on their house's inner walls :). Due to this, and to the fact that all pencils, brushes and markers were forbidden, the child found another way to express: all chocolate received was hidden and used to "decorate" the walls when all other tools were not available.30 years later, here I am, willing to tell a story on every wall there is. Not with chocolate, like I used to :), but in watercolors, as you can find on my shop here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/bijuterra. Thank you, and hope to enjoy my illustrations and videos from your comfortable armchair, having a cup of warm milk in your hand and smiling. 6. How can I send my drawing to you? ****************************************************** For any personal advice you can send me your illustrations or questions here: [email protected] and I will reply. Thank you! 7. How to Draw Lace | Fashion Sketching

01:53
Watch more How to Draw Fashion Sketches videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/501943-How-to-Draw-Lace-Fashion-Sketching Learn about drawing lace in a fashion sketch from fashion designer Garo Sparo in this Howcast video. This is how you draw a lace. You start out with the lace that you're planning on rendering, which is a great idea. First figure out what kind of lace you want to use. This is especially handy if you have a client sitting beside you, and that's pretty much the story of my life, because I'm a custom designer, and they're sitting there right beside me, so I can't sit there and render perfect little flowers the whole time. So you have your swatch of fabric pinned to the page beside you, and then you just kind of indicate, just like little flowers throughout the dress, you know, some swirls between them, kind of just like your, let your hand just kind of just flow, don't be too rigid with it, because laces, lacey is all about like flowers and flow and whatnot. So you could even really just take the easiest route possible and just do a bunch of squiggles, which I'm going to do at the whole bottom of this dress, because I've already indicated at the top that that is going to be these hibiscus, or whatever the heck they are, squiggle squiggle, add some shading here and there, squiggle squiggle, one flower there, one flower here, one flower there, one in the middle to really drive it home that this is lace. And that is how you render lace on the spot.

Men Fashion sketches on a transparent paper

04:04
Male Fashion figure on a transparent paper Finally, a fashion tutorial to see how to design some men clothes. First, use pencil to minimally sketch the silhouette of the body. There is no problem if you don't know how to draw the male body. I will show you a simple technique that works everythime: use transparent paper to sketch some main areas in the male body. Just leave some small pencil traces or some keypoints to know where the face will be positioned. This is the most important. You will find transparent paper in each shop, and they come in white, red, blue and many other colors. Mine is transparent meaning white transparent paper. After the minimal sketching, I used white Posca marker - large size and then a white liner, to add some details. The source of inspiration is the image in the left side of the screen. So i took the branches as a source of inspiration. I transformed them into graphic patterns to create a heavy volume for the coat. Then, with black Copic marker i added the big surfaces to help the white graphic lines be even more obvious. For the face and face details i used art and graphic twin makers to underline the shadows. With a pastel pencil i filled the areas where the hands or the gloves are and then, with a brush, i used gold acrylic to add some details. I just filled the empty spaces with gold, as you can see. On transparent paper, there is no need to add too much water, because this can ruin your sketch. The paper will have wrinkles. For the hair, i used black marker from Copic. And then, i added some highlights with white, on the glossy parts of the face. Once you finished the drawing, you can try to see how your transparent paper will look like when superposed to white paper, black or colored one. See what better works for you and then use a tape to stick them together. For the other 2 designs, the process will be the same. Now sit back and enjoy the rest of the video. Hope you will like it. And if so, please share it, leave me a comment or a thumbs up and if you didnt do it until now, please subscribe for more. thank you for watching, and, as always, stay tuned for more videos to come, next thursday, same hour, same place. How to Color a Sketch | Fashion Sketching

03:39
Watch more How to Draw Fashion Sketches videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/501959-How-to-Color-a-Sketch-Fashion-Sketching Learn about coloring fashion sketches from fashion designer Garo Sparo in this Howcast video. Something that is very important as well in fashion design is coloring your fashion sketches. After you've inked in the whole situation, you can take color pencils, pastels, wash, watercolor, whatever you want. I'm going to do this one with some pastels, because they're really nice to shade. So you just start out on the outside, you pick your color blocking, which this dress has a lot of color blocking in it. With pastels less is more because they spread around the page really well. And this might or might not be the final color that I decide to do this dress in, but it's mainly used to create color blocking, so that you could see what the final design is going to be. I'm going to go heavy on the shoulders to show shadow, in here and here, and here I'm going to hit this with some more red. I want to go with a paler shade of red here. It's a very volcanic dress so far. And we're going to go with, you know, we're going to go with red sleeves since they're in line, should be nice, actually is more of a burgundy or a wine color, excellent. So now you take your handy dandy smudging device, and work the color in. And by creating those lines on the outside, you automatically create shading, because now you're just drawing the color into the panels or design lines of the dress. One thing to keep in mind with pastels is after you get done finished working with one color, if it's not in the same family, you have to use a different side of your smudge stick, otherwise you're going to turn your whole dress the same color, which you don't want. Then you'll have to redraw the whole thing, and that's a pain. So I have these oranges in here, I'm using just the side of my smudge stick. Make sure you blow on it every once in a while, because that pastel is just basically powder compressed into a stick. And I think I want to darken these a bit, because these are going to be a different color. It really, I just love pastels, it's because it's instant gratification, it's like, damn, it's colored. And if the pastel happens to go outside the line, it's no big deal, you can just take an eraser to it later. I'll go in and do the skin toning later, but that is one way using pastels to color in a fashion sketch.

What materials do you use for your drawings? I use Copic Ciao markers and Touch Twin Markers, Quill Multiboard white paper, 2B and HB Pentel and Faber-Castell 0.5 mechanical pencils and Faber-Castell PVC-Free Space Eraser (Cool name) and I use Uni-ball Signo white fineliner 2. Did you go to any art school or academy? No. I am taking Studio Arts in senior high school right now. It's not from that class that I learned what I know. I am learning new things from the class, but so far, not to do with fashion illustration or manga drawings. I go to a regular high school, so it doesn't specialize in art. 3. How do you draw the models? Do you use any templates? I started out by tracing models from magazines which is harder than it sounds, but once you get the hang of it, its pretty easy. Then of course, I searched all types of videos on YouTube and some sites as well on Google, which unfortunately, I don't remember. 4. How old are you? I am now 17 years old 5. How long have you been drawing? I'm pretty sure I started drawing at 6. That's probably my oldest memory of me drawing. I got into manga drawings when I was 11 years old, I started teaching myself how to draw manga when I was 13 years old. I started developing an interest in fashion design also when I was 11, but I pursued that interest or taken it further at the age of 14. So, I would say I started drawing fashion illustration at the age of 14. 6. Where do you get your inspiration? I get my inspiration from music, photos on Instagram, fashion trends, things that I love. There are times where I am just in an Artist's Block and I feel really brain dead where I can't draw. Or I force myself to draw and it never turns out to be something I like. I am currently in an Artist's Block which has been going on since late October 2011, and I am finding ways to get out of it. I'll keep you posted on how I break through it :] 7. Do you have any links or books you can recommend? Definitely! Fashion Illustration by Anna Kiper and Fashion Poses for Fashion Illustrators by Sha Tahmasebi are two books that I own at the moment. I'm hoping to get more. These two books are very helpful if you're a beginner or even if you want to be a bit more advanced. http://www.monkeysee.com/play/5156-how-to-draw-clothes-on-a-fashion-figure this is a very basic tutorial but seriously, this tutorial helped me when I was just starting. What Supplies Will You Need? | Fashion Sketching

Supplies for fashion design. There are so many supplies out there that you could choose from. The best way to go about it is to systematically try different things. You need your mechanical pencils. They're very important. Different level leads, as far as hardness is concerned. You need to have a beautiful pen that you feel really comfortable drawing with. From there you could start to explore how you're going to color in your fashion illustrations. Whether you want to use pastels. Whether you want to use watercolor, gouache. Whether you want to use colored pencils. I can go, there's many other mediums out there. But, what's most important is to find a medium that you're most comfortable with. And to work with it to the best of your ability. There's all sorts of other tools that you're gonna need. You're gonna need a good smudger, good smudging stick. It's how you create all your shading. You're going to need a great eraser. Because, lord knows, you're gonna make mistakes. And that doesn't matter, you can just erase it. White out is a great tool for finishing sketches. There's all sorts of things. Just really have fun with it and really get comfortable with using your tools. So play around. Experiment. Play around with different kinds of paper. There's marker paper. There's all sorts of vellums. Etcetera, etcetera. You could even use cheap, printer paper if you want. That's a great thing to just practice on. So those are pretty much all the supplies you need to create a fashion portfolio.

How to Draw Hair | Fashion Sketching

Watch more How to Draw Fashion Sketches videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/501949-How-to-Draw-Hair-Fashion-Sketching Learn how to draw hair for a fashion sketch from fashion designer Garo Sparo in this Howcast video. So one great way to finish out a sketch is to draw the hair. It's very important, because you want to just make this look really finished. So first you want to like get the shape of the head really good. You think about what sort of style you want to go with. I'm always drawing Brigitte Bardot hair, something about her just turns me on. I kind of just start at the top, start at the hairline, you kind of create a hairline like this. And then you start thinking about the shape and the wave, and she always had just like lots of wave in her hair, little peaks and points and whatnots. Keep creating the hairline. Think about how much volume you want. Of course I'm going really volumes with this hair. She's going to a red carpet event in this gown. You add your peaks and curls, just so many different ways to draw hair, but you just kind of go with what feels right, and what sort of hairstyles work with the look that you're going with, whether it's a pixie cut, or whether it's big, red carpet hair. I'm going with big, red carpet hair today, why not, this is a red carpet dress, let the hair match the dress. And there you go, that's pretty much how you draw hair.

This is how you draw a dress. First of all, you want to sketch out your croquis. This way you have something that you can erase later, and you can design without worrying about too many details. Just kind of think about what silhouette you want to do. I'm going to do a bateau neck, which is basically a boat neck, simple jersey dress. It has some flow just under the waist, just to give you a little bit of a kick in the hip, looks like a cute little summer dress. And just part of being a designer is just developing your esthetic, you just really have to just keep drawing nonstop, and then it will just come to you. But after I've drawn the dress, I then can over it in ink. And I did something that's very simple here, this is just a jersey dress, which jersey, of course, is just a stretchy, simple fabric. You do your outlines, draw in your drapiy-ness if you want it to happen, and then you go in with your eraser and get rid of all of your pencil lines. Et voila, that's how you draw a dress.

What materials do you mainly use for your drawings? In general, I use Copic Ciao markers and Touch Twin Markers, Quill Multiboard A4 white paper, 2B and HB Pentel and Faber-Castell 0.5 mechanical pencil and Faber-Castell PVC-Free Space Eraser (Cool name) and I use Uni-ball Signo white fineliner 2. Did you go to any art school or academy? No. I took Studio Arts in senior high school. It's not from that class that I learned evreything I know. I did learn new things from the class, but not to do with fashion illustration or manga drawings. I went to a regular high school, so it doesn't specialize in art. 3. How do you draw the models? Do you use any templates? I started out by tracing models from magazines which is harder than it sounds, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy. Then of course, I searched all types of videos on YouTube and some sites as well on Google, which unfortunately, I don't remember. How I learned to draw my models is using the 9-Head technique. 4. How old are you? I am now 19 years old 5. I get my inspiration from music, photos on Instagram, Tumblr fashion trends, things that I love. There are times where I am just in an Artist's Block and I feel really brain dead where I can't draw. Or I force myself to draw and it never turns out to be something that I like. 7. How to Add Color, Texture & Shadows | Fashion Sketching

Watch more How to Draw Fashion Sketches videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/501940-How-to-Add-Color-Texture-and-Shadows-Fashion-Sketching Learn how to add color, texture, and shadows to a fashion sketch from fashion designer Garo Sparo in this Howcast video. This is how you indicate color, texture and pattern. I prefer to use colored pencils, they're great because you can get all sorts of harder lines and what not, and then you can smudge it all over the place to give yourself more depth and shadow. So I’m going to go with these three colors, different shades of blue for this dress, and just start of really, really light. I’m going to connect my colors across giving a beautiful butterfly inspired design. And I’m going to go in with another color. And this particular dress is going to be made out of a very smooth mesh, so the texture itself that I’m trying to accomplish here is something that is just smooth, and just not too textured. So that’s a challenge in itself but it seems like it’s working out for me. After you’ve done all of your light shading, I think I’m going to leave some panels of white in there, which will look cool. Now you go back in and you do harder lines wherever you think there should be a shadow. And usually if you’re doing a dead on sketch, somebody that is facing dead on to you, all the shadows are going to be on the sides of their body, et cetera, et cetera. You can create a source of light if you want, but pretty much it’s like looking in the mirror, and take a look at yourself and where the shadows fall on your body. Don’t worry about these hard lines that you’re making because you go in later with your smudge stick, which is a wonderful thing, everyone should have a smudge stick, and blend all of this together. And you want to kind of like, anything that's falling to the back of your design, you want to give it a little bit more color, because that’s just saying it’s in the back and it’s shadowing it more. So I think I’m going to keep that white in there. So now I’m going to go in with my smudge stick handy dandy, and now you want to blend. You don’t want to mix your colors, so if you get too much of a blue in one corner of your smudge stick, you can chop it off, you can do all kinds of things. But I’m just going to rotate it and do it with a purple with that, which I got to do a little bit more purple shading here. I’m losing my shading. And now as the final step, just to indicate that this is mesh, I’m going to go over certain sections of the garment and just kind of create a meshy pattern. You don’t have to cover the entire thing, it’s just to get a notion of what is the fabric choice. I’m doing it on the white sections because it will show up the best. And that’s how you indicate color, shadow and texture.
