How designers turn inspiration into fashion collections: In my previous videos, we talked about how to create a fashion collection. We will do more exercises now to better understand the steps of any collection. Apart from the text part of any documentation - the phase when you read a lot about the topic you are interested in- there is the visual documentation. In this case, I took another image from a book of mine and use it as a starting point for some sketches. How to actually get inspired by an image? Try to decompose the image into elements. See what are the definitory elements that compose the image. In this case, you could use elements like: the pattern with stripes, the color, the sleeves and the lower part of the costume, the structures you see in the area of eyes and those elements near the ears. Use them separately, combine them, use them as modules: big or small, rotate them and so on.I used the shapes near the ears and I placed them in the center of my costume. I imagined those shapes will have holes inside, so that you can see the skin or the layers of my costume. You can use the elements and place them in other parts of your costume. For example, some sleeves could become scarfs or you could undo them and sew them again in stripes to create a rhythm to your future garment. If you used a lot of volume for the upper part of your costume, try to simplify the rest, there is no need to over-work the whole costume. As about the drawing style, use details and a black marker to add the contrast here and there, where you feel the need. For the second drawing, turn the page upside down and get inspired. Even if the elements are the same, they position will inspire you to see even more in the photo, to discover inspiration there where you did not know it exist. See how used the "let's say glasses" from my source of inspiration and used them as earrings.Mix the elements and play with them in unusual combinations. When sketching, there is no need to think of the human body. You can draw it only when it helps, if not, the costume will be enough. Use simple lines and add color because this will help you visualize the outfit. Also, write down your ideas regarding the colors or textures to be used in the final work. And now sit back and see how I used another image to finish my small collection inspired by African art.As I previously mentioned, try to really sketch after the photos I used and send me your collection by email. My email is: [email protected] Waiting for your sketches and I will come back with a feed-back.Thank you and please don't forget to subscribe if you liked my video.

Two Austrian women started „nature in fashion, a creative network for fashion designers throughout Europe. Their first collaborative work is a calendar inspired by nature. Nature inspires fashion and is part of it at the same time. 18 young designers from all over Europe have translated their experience with nature into fashion items. The outcome, 18 completely different outfits, reflects themes such as sea, cliff, stone, ice, sunset or storm. Photographer Julia Wesely matched each outfit with the element that inspired it at picturesque locations around Europe. Her creativity resulted in an outstanding calendar which combines fashion, photography and nature in an aesthetic new way. at www.amazon.de the Calendar could be ordered other links: www.natureinfashion.com www.julia-wesely.com

Fashion collection inspiration In this video you will see my last 4 sketches having plants as inspiration. I am ready to get to a new challenge, so please leave a comment below the description of my video if you want me create a special collection. This time, I will sketch only in pencils, without adding the colors. I mentioned in my previous video that fact that you can sketch only in graphite pencils and then, you can add colors in your computer or on a transparent paper if you want to see what colors fit best. When sketching with pencil, use the elements like: lines, dots, surfaces and explore the possibilities. A line can be soft, curved, rigid or interrupted, a dot can be placed single or in small or large groups, a surface can be textured or left simple, in one tone. For these 2 outfits I preferred lines and black surfaces from time to time to create a contrast. If there is too much information in one part of the costume, the rest should be more simple and easy to understand. There is no need to have crowded surfaces everywhere. Empty spaces will be very useful and they will grab the attention upon the rest of the composition. Always think of your disposal of elements when creating something. Also, don't be afraid of thinking unconventional when it comes to creating a new costume. Large volumes can be spectacular too:) What you should know is that later on you will be able to adjust them and transform all these creative exercises into wearable costumes. In this stage there is no need to be too explicit. If you have the time, leave your sketches away for 2-3 days. Later on you will interpret them differently and who knows, maybe each of your sketch will be a new start for another collection. In fact, this is the beauty of a collection. You can choose your favorite sketch and start from there to make 4-5 different outfits. Great designers are doing about 100-120 different costumes to present them on the stage, so, you should have a lot of patience with your fashion collection and start thinking like a future designer. This means you have to make a solid research, find your best images that will inspire you and then start sketching. After that, take a deep look to all of them and choose the best of them. Create as many pieces until you say: that's it, that's my limit, I can not dig for more, these are all the combinations I can think of. And then take a break, start from the beginning and do the same excise until there is no much left to explore. This is what I do to create hundreds of sketches without getting tired or bored. This means to be organized and to know the process.Creativity is something you can learn. In fact, you have all the information inside you. These exercises will only help you digg for more. They will help you bring all those ideas to the surfaces. Enjoy my video until the end and then try to see how many outfits you can create starting from the same images.Send them all to me and I will include them in my next video. We will analyze it all together and I will come with a feed-back to each drawing, so that you could learn fast how to be better. Waiting for your drawings at [email protected] and until then, please subscribe to my channel. Thank you and see you next time!

Biomimicry design, explained with 99% Invisible. Check them out here: https://99percentinvisible.org/ Subscribe to our channel here: http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Japan’s Shinkansen doesn’t look like your typical train. With its long and pointed nose, it can reach top speeds up to 150–200 miles per hour. It didn’t always look like this. Earlier models were rounder and louder, often suffering from the phenomenon of "tunnel boom," where deafening compressed air would rush out of a tunnel after a train rushed in. But a moment of inspiration from engineer and birdwatcher Eiji Nakatsu led the system to be redesigned based on the aerodynamics of three species of birds. Nakatsu’s case is a fascinating example of biomimicry, the design movement pioneered by biologist and writer Janine Benyus. She's a co-founder of the Biomimicry Institute, a non-profit encouraging creators to discover how big challenges in design, engineering, and sustainability have often already been solved through 3.8 billion years of evolution on earth. We just have to go out and find them. How did I come up with the idea of Project #1? Where do I get my inspiration? That is the question I get most often since my website is live – so I wanted to give it a proper answer and discuss the way different designers, from Alexander McQueen to Stella McCartney and Alexander Wang, work themselves. There are 3 groups of creative minds: those how live in the past, those who consider the present and those who look towards the future. And somewhere in the middle, there is me… trying to find the method that will suit me best. If you find this video useful, give me a thumb up, subscribe to this channel and tell more people about it! Click for more: http://ww2.kqed.org/artschool/ Oakland high school student Zachary Fernandez made it to the finals on the first season of Project Runway Junior, then headed straight back to Oakland School of the Arts to continue his education as a designer. His newest collection, Kathmandu, was inspired by recovery efforts in Nepal after the devastating 2015 earthquake. Art School followed Fernandez's process as he sketched, sourced fabric, and designed his new project, revealed at a culminating fashion show in spring 2016. Hi, my name is Zachary Fernandez and I'm currently a fashion student. So I am starting my Kathmandu 2016 collection. My collection's gonna be debuting at my school fashion show, and so I have little under seven weeks to get this all put together. So our school assignment was to pick a city that we wanted to be inspired by for this collection. I ended with Kathmandu, Nepal, all of the trouble that they went through last year was really inspiring and I was able to take those ideas of imbalance and the destruction of culture and apply that to this new collection. These are the pieces that I ended up designing. They're ever-changing and they kind of just are always in flux. My sketching process involves a lot of images, a lot of mixed medias, I like to do collages, watercolors, acrylic paste, it's a real reflection of what my mind looks like. Here you have the final sketches that I've done. The sketching process for me is really a major step between just ideas and kind of this fantasy world that I've created in my mind to really functional wearable pieces. Fabric sourcing is one of my favorite things to do. It's really like a group activity, like meet a couple of friends, we'll just go, we'll explore the city, we'll get inspiration. So I'm looking for like a very pale blue that's almost like very silverish, and then I'm gonna be looking for a very deep, rust orange color. Okay, so I need to find this, but more grayish blue. The fabric store is one of those places that you go in with one idea and one concept and one thought, and you come out with like 500 more. This is it. - This is it! - This is it. - [Girl] Dude! - Hey! Yes! So I spend the majority of my time draping and it's definitely a part that will make or break a piece. I take a piece of muslin, which is just a really basic blend fabric, and I started sculpting it to the dress form. And then those mock-ups that I make of the dress form are then fitted to the model, and sometimes I try them on a model, I'm like, this is hideous, I don't know why, it just overpowers her or something happens and that leads to even better ideas and even more just, creativeness. When you design while you create, I just think it takes so much longer and you like pressure yourself so much more. So, my design mind is turned off. And it's just about sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing. So after I finish draping, I take a part of that mockup and I totally seam rip it and I re-pattern it, and then I cut out of my real fabric. It's always really nerve-wracking 'cause a lot of times the fabric's all that you have, either the budget doesn't allow for you to get more fabric, or there's simply not anymore left. It has this like box-like structure in it. The box is actually lined with horse-hair so that it can kind of take the shape and that's why I'm kind of trying to like manipulate it right now 'cause it just takes on whatever shape you really need it to. The show, oh the show. Six days, and I'm still cutting up fabric like, I don't think that's normal. There's always going to be that last minute hurry up and finish like state of being. I have a picture in my mind about how this is supposed to go, but who knows if it actually go that way. I think that there can be a lot of different ways to read the look. Obviously you look for like the main things like color, silhouette, is this an evening piece, is this a day piece and you just kind of put the garment and choose certain categories and that really helps people read fashion out, by the time the piece is on the runway I'm already thinking about a whole new collection and I'm really thinking something totally different, but it doesn't really hit me that these people, for them it's the first time that they've seen this. I've spent months and months planning and sketching and putting it together. If I see all these different things in these pieces, but no one else does, then it's kind of sad, but then it's also part of what makes fashion art, is because people see it in so many different ways. We are in my home, studio, bedroom combination in Berkeley, California. I have this look from Project Runway Junior, which was the first episode, and this look for my most recent collection. They really mean a lot to me 'cause they show how much progress I've made within the last four, five months.

I styled 3 outfits inspired by the popular fashions of thirty years ago! Two Austrian women started „nature in fashion, a creative network for fashion designers throughout Europe. Nature inspires fashion and is part of it at the same time. 18 young designers from all over Europe have translated their experience with nature into fashion items. The outcome, 18 completely different outfits, reflects themes such as sea, cliff, stone, ice, sunset or storm. Photographer Julia Wesely matched each outfit with the element that inspired it at pictures from locations around Europe. Her creativity resulted in an outstanding calendar which combines fashion, photography and nature in an aesthetic new way. The „nature in fashion- founders, Julia Wesely and Irene Stepniczka, stated that encouraging the young and creative fashion scene in Europe was the main motivating factor behind „nature in fashion. After its presentation in January, the calendar published at the „Bibliothek der Provinz is available for sale for 22 € throughout Europe. ( amazon.de )

Lisa Robertson sits down with Tanya Taylor and Joe Zee to discuss Tanya's line. Tanya talks about her start in fashion, inspiration, the design process, and her love of classic fashion. For more Lisa: http://qvc.co/LisaRobertsonShow One of the designers that is creating a lot of buzz in the industry is Tanya Taylor. We're thrilled to have her here today. How are you, Tanya? I'm doing well. Thank you very much for having me. Thank you so much for being here. Joe, thank you so much again for bringing us the great designers. Of course this is fun! One of the things that I think is very interesting is that you did not start out knowing that you were going to be a designer. No, I didn't. I studied finance for a couple years in Canada and I definitely enjoyed it, but wanted to do something a little more creative, so I went to central St. Martin's in the summertime and tried a course there and it was so different to what I was studying at McGill that I decided to apply to Parsons, so I went there for a program for two years. What is it about fashion that made you say that's where I want to invest my time and energy? I think what I love about it is that every season you can really jump into a whole new story and I felt it's a career that you can really reinvent what you're feeling. When you are creating a concept, is it something where you sketch it first, do you do the fabric first? How do you do that process? I normally start with inspiration images. I'll spend 2-3 weeks researching something I'm interested in and pulling together boards and boards of inspiration and then kind of fabric and sketches come hand in hand, so looking at the fabrics, then imagine the silhouettes and before we order the fabrics, we'll sketch kind of everything you can imagine, so I think we'll do 600 sketches and narrow it down from there. It can go in so many directions and it's really just a kind of instinct of what you want the question to look like in its final stages and I love that editing process. If someone is sitting at home and they don't get to see the collection yet, how would you describe your aesthetic? What are the things that they're going to look at and go that is so Tanya Taylor? I think we've really developed a lot of focus on our prints this season. This season we're really about feminine, classic silhouettes, but with a little twist. This season is specifically a little more masculine, a little tougher. Last season, our girl was on vacation, so she was a lot more free spirited and she had a lot of brighter colors and it felt very feminine. I think she's come back to the city and has a little bit more layering, textures. So I think definitely people have looked to us for that kind of use of texture. To me what I think Tanya does really so well is she's got that urban edge, that sort of cool girl. It feels very sophisticated, but it doesn't feel old and I think it's a tough sort of line to balance when you say I want to wear something modern without being too avant-garde. I think women should always be comfortable in whatever they're wearing. I think in general I like to feel like myself in whatever I wear. No matter what the trends are I think you can experiment and try little things, but being classic is a way to stay true kind of a way to approach dressing and I think beautiful. I like women that experiment a little bit, but have a classic look about them.

What's more fun than watching a fashion show? How about a fashion show featuring incredibly cute dogs?? That's exactly what took place recently at New York City's Historic Hotel Pennsylvania. The New York Pet Fashion Show (NYPFS) is among the world's largest animal rescue benefits, bringing fashion lovers from around the world together for a wonderful, colorful, fun-filled event. Presented by TropiClean, NYPFS describes itself as "a celebration of and dedication to the couture style of our world, to rescue our animals in need and honor our planet." This year's show benefited the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, an organization that seeks to provide quality of life and find "forever homes" for domestic animals. In this OnlyGood TV Original, you'll get to meet Ada Nieves, pet fashion designer and one of the founders of the NYPFS. Ada got her start designing costumes for animals after her husband surprised her with a pet chihuahua before he departed for a military tour abroad. Raised by seamstresses and tailors, Ada had a natural talent for clothing design—and her pup provided the perfect model! The animal fashion designer rose to international prominence after photos of Oscars-inspired dresses she created for her chihuahua went viral, and today, Ada sews animal costumes for dozens of events a year, including the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade, the Algonquin Hotel Cat Fashion Show, and the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.. While her Oscars-inspired dresses go for thousands of dollars, Ada generally doesn't charge more than $500 and most of her fashion-show work is for charity. Both at the NYPFS and at other events, Ada puts great emphasis on collecting donations and raising awareness for animal rescue groups. "Animals are part of my world and I need to know they're okay," Ada explains. "I choose to be the voice that they don't have. I choose to be active, advocate, and to help in my own way." You'll love Ada's giving attitude, her story of how she got started in this special industry, and her commitment to helping animals lead happy and healthy lives. The TONI&GUY Session Team backstage at Hellavagirl for London Fashion Week AW19. WHAT’S THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE HAIR? Hair is dimensional and graphical, yet doesn’t deduct focus from Hellavagirl’s bold silhouettes. Inspiration is taken from photographer Rebecca Horn’s image ‘Unicorn’ which is portrayed through the use of black tape. WHAT’S THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE COLLECTION? A conceptual collection based on the novel ‘Wolves in the Wall’ which designer, Hellavagirl felt reflected a dark time in her life. As the collection progressed, Hellavagirl wanted to incorporate fun elements such as larger-than-life headpieces and ruffled hemlines to lighten the nature of the collection. Essentially it's athletic-inspired style, anchored by the ever popular sweatpants. Sweatpants haven't always had the best reputation among style guys and stylish guys. Just the name conjures up images of ratty old gym pants that guys wore while lounging on the couch, binging their latest favorite TV show while eating a big bowl of cereal. Not a great look. But somewhere along the way, #sweatpants (also known as joggers) became stylish. It's got to be the right type of sweats though. I'm talking slim fitting, tailored pants for a more streamlined look. There should be a taper towards the ankle with very minimal to no ankle opening, preferably worn with no break. THE LOOKS The following 5 looks are how I would rock the athleisure aesthetic. Overall, the 5 looks are quite similar with a simple style swap to change up the look ever so slightly. Above all, when it comes to athleisure there's one rule to keep in mind. Keep it simple and stick to the basics. Look 1: Track Jacket & Grays For look one, I kept things simple in neutral grays. The fit is on point. Notice how every piece hugs my body and has a clean drape. The sneakers are low profile with no laces. And on my wrist is a vintage digital watch that plays well with the whole sporty vibe. Look 2: Swap In Navy Harrington Jacket You can swap the track jacket for the smarter harrington jacket. This move will elevate the look a little bit, but still retain a sporty, athletic feel. Look 3: Swap In Navy German Army Trainers Now it's time to swap the footwear. I picked a pair of leather/suede German Army Trainers in navy, with a gumsole. Its very low profile, showing a lot of ankle. The color also picks up the navy from the jacket for a nice balance of neutrals. Look 4: Swap In Gray Blazer This one is a bit more elevated once again, but instead of a track jacket and harrington jacket, I swapped in the quintessential charcoal gray blazer. It's one of the most versatile pieces in menswear, period. Not only is it stylish, but super comfortable. Look 5: Swap In Navy Cargo Joggers For the final look, I've swapped the sweats for a pair of cargo pants. Say what!? Yeah, I clown on cargos all the time, but you can pull it off so long as it's a clean, slim pair that tapers towards the ankle. The pockets have got to be clean. The messy nature of cargo pants is what gives it such a bad rep. Yep, cargo pants are Gentleman Within approved, for an effortlessly cool athleisure look. - - - - - - - - - - - - EXCLUSIVE EXTRAS ➢Check out the ‘I Am A Gentleman’ Manifesto → http://bit.ly/2vQewP5 ➢A Crash Course to Better Style → http://bit.ly/2nFUSS1 ➢Join the Gentlemen Within Private Facebook Community → http://bit.ly/2wYuH1n

More videos at: http://arttube.boijmans.nl Fashion designer Walter Van Beirendonck about his work, death as inspiration and the difference between fashion and art Even though he was recently in the hospital he still expects to reach the age of a hundred years. And then, in 2357, exactly 300 years after he has deceased, he will be recovered in a colourful temple decorated with various symbols from nature. The temples entrance is guarded by a brown bear; the body rests in a tailored made sarcophagus including erection! Ejaculating penises as far as you can see. Horrific or controversial? In the universe Walter Van Beirendonck creates, death embraces its smaller brother. It fits perfect, the fashion king of Antwerp concludes. This video is part of the The Art of Fashion exhibition, on view until January 10th 2010 at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
