HP Wins $3 Billion in Damages from Oracle Over Intel Processor
An Oracle spokeswoman said on Thursday a California jury ordered Oracle Corporation to pay Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Company $3 billion in damages in a case over HP's Itanium servers. Oracle said it would appeal the verdict. The Itaniuum processor is made by Intel Incorporated. According to Reuters, Oracle decided to stop developing software for use with HP's Itanium-based servers in 2011, saying that Intel made it clear that the chip was nearing the end of its life and was shifting its focus to its x86 microprocessor. But HP said it had an agreement with Oracle that support for Itanium would continue, without which the equipment using the chip would become obsolete. In the first phase of trial in 2012, Santa Clara Superior Court Judge James Kleinberg ruled that there had been a contract. Understanding L1 Terminal Fault (L1TF)
Learn more about the speculative execution side-channel method called L1 Terminal Fault (L1TF). There are three applications of L1TF speculative execution side-channel cache timing vulnerabilities. They are similar to previously reported variants. These particular methods target access to the L1 data cache, a small pool of memory within each processor core designed to store information about what the processor core is most likely to do next. Microcode updates released by Intel are an important component of the mitigation strategy for all three applications of L1TF. When coupled with corresponding updates to operating system and hypervisor software from industry partners and the open source community, these updates help ensure that consumers, IT professionals and cloud service providers have access to the protections they need. Converting My CPU to VHDL Via Logisim Evolution (for Eventual FPGA Board?)
This video shows the conversion process of my CPU to VHDL using Logisim Evolution. GHDL and GTKWave are used to compile, run, and display the results of the VHDL program. Once it's in VHDL, it could then be put in an FPGA and used in the "real world". This CPU is based on the 16 instruction microprocessor I designed for a homework assignment. This video is also useful to anyone who wonders "what can you do with ANDs, ORs, NANDs, and NORs anyway?" or anyone who wants to know how to simulate digital logic circuits. Oracle Said It Will Cease All Efforts To Develop Technology Around The Itanium Chip
Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL) said that it will cease all efforts to develop technology around Intel's (NASDAQ:INTC) Itanium chip, which reportedly took Intel and Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ) by surprise. The company said its decision on the chip came after multiple conversations with Intel senior management, which made it clear that their strategic focus is on their x86 microprocessor and that Itanium was nearing the end of its life. HP issued a statement saying, "We are shocked that Oracle would put enterprises and governments at risk while costing them hundreds of millions of dollars in lost productivity in a shameless gambit to limit fair competition." Oracle has a potential upside of 14.6% based on a current price of $31.41 and an average consensus analyst price target of $36.
