MIPS RISC based ISA introduced by MIPS Technologies in 1981, now owned by Imagination Technologies. Became leader in the market in 90s when majority game consoles ship with it. It's also popular in universities for teaching CPU architecture due to its simplicity and proper implementations of RISC philosophy. Today, some routers and entry level Android tablets are produced with MIPS SoC. MCUs produced called Atmega families which consists of various 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit MCU models produced by Atmel. Very popular among hobbyists and became even popular as Arduino solutions launched. Still, as popular as it is, Atmel eventually acquired by Microchip Inc., their nemesis as how fans from both parties portrayed about it. Power Architecture At first developed by IBM under the name POWER ISA, while PowerPC was created shortly after in mission to rival x86 in early 90s. PS3 and XBox 360 among its user. Nowadays, Power computers produced by IBM used in HPC and enterprise segments. by retrogamefox, https://goo.gl/kQbdND by helmut satzger, https://goo.gl/ODrcMw 5. SPARC Introduced by Sun Microsystems which now owned by Oracle, SPARC is open ISA nonetheless. Fujitsu and Oracle are the only vendors producing SPARC CPUs for use in data center and HPC market. Stands for Scalable Processor Architecture (SPARC), it is the best architecture for running multicore-multicpu applications. In fact, K computer listed as world's best supercomputer for running any parallel applications according to Graph500. CC-BY: by , https://goo.gl/fum8sN 4. PIC A billion unit of MCUs sold annually, without doubt PIC family MCU should be in the list for being popular by both hobbyists and industry alike. The family encompasses 8-bit and 16-bit MCU with 16-bit dsPIC and 32-bit as its derivatives. Its MCUs offer loads of features which other competing MCUs usually lacks for its class makes it a main point of its popularity beside huge community and libraries available online. CC-BY: by unlokia, https://goo.gl/tBrhjm by Terry Sturtevant, https://goo.gl/VBVZbr 3. 8051 / MCS-51 8-bit MCU architecture launched by Intel in 1980 for embedded systems. Most used MCU family until early 90s while its derivatives, MCS-151 and MCS-251 which produced by other vendors remains popular as Intel already stop MCU productions a long time ago. 2. x86 Intel become king of PC hardware environment as result of successful Microsoft-Intel duopoly since late 80s and remains popular today in data center and desktop segments. Have a hard time penetrating mobile market for the past 8 years, now Intel sort of give it up and focusing on enhancing their presence in HPC and data centers by introducing co-processor and FPGA-x86 SoC in future product like Xeon Phi. ARM Available as an IP license for any vendor to use from ARM holdings since 1985, now this concept proven successful as today 15 billion ARM MCU/CPU produced in 2015 alone and keep growing. Today, almost every electronic devices contain ARM MCUs if not CPU. For every x86 computers sold, at least 3 ARM cores co-existed in forms of PC peripherals controller such as HDD, SSD, WiFi card, etc. CC-BY: by Cellhut.com, https://goo.gl/SXuruA by ARMdevices.net, https://goo.gl/RgjWxu and https://goo.gl/ze577s Disco Ultralounge by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1100602 Artist: http://incompetech.com/

HP Wins $3 Billion in Damages from Oracle Over Intel Processor

01:04
An Oracle spokeswoman said on Thursday a California jury ordered Oracle Corporation to pay Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Company $3 billion in damages in a case over HP's Itanium servers. Oracle said it would appeal the verdict. The Itaniuum processor is made by Intel Incorporated. According to Reuters, Oracle decided to stop developing software for use with HP's Itanium-based servers in 2011, saying that Intel made it clear that the chip was nearing the end of its life and was shifting its focus to its x86 microprocessor. But HP said it had an agreement with Oracle that support for Itanium would continue, without which the equipment using the chip would become obsolete. In the first phase of trial in 2012, Santa Clara Superior Court Judge James Kleinberg ruled that there had been a contract. The jury decided damages on Thursday. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/topNews/~3/ZSkMflb7QP0/us-hewlett-packard-oracle-verdict-idUSKCN0ZG3C1 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Business using http://wochit.com

Understanding L1 Terminal Fault (L1TF)

04:21
Learn more about the speculative execution side-channel method called L1 Terminal Fault (L1TF). There are three applications of L1TF speculative execution side-channel cache timing vulnerabilities. They are similar to previously reported variants. These particular methods target access to the L1 data cache, a small pool of memory within each processor core designed to store information about what the processor core is most likely to do next. Microcode updates released by Intel are an important component of the mitigation strategy for all three applications of L1TF. When coupled with corresponding updates to operating system and hypervisor software from industry partners and the open source community, these updates help ensure that consumers, IT professionals and cloud service providers have access to the protections they need. Caching In: Understand, Measure, and Use Your CPU Cache More Effectively

54:23
Modern computationally intensive tasks are rarely bottlenecked by the absolute performance of your processor cores. The real bottleneck in 2013 is getting data out of memory. CPU caches are designed to alleviate the difference in performance between CPU core clock speed and main memory clock speed, but developers rarely understand how this interaction works or how to measure or tune their application accordingly. This session aims to address this by • Describing how CPU caches work in the latest Intel hardware • Showing what and how to measure in order to understand the caching behavior of software • Giving examples of how this affects Java program performance and what can be done to address poor cache utilization Author: Richard Warburton Richard Warburton is a software developer who loves solving complex problems, but actively challenges how much of software development is dealing with day-to-day trivialities. Having obtained a PhD in the area of compiler optimizations and static analysis, he has been applying his abilities in industry. Initially on bytecode analysis software, and more recently on Java performance tuning tools. He actively involves himself in the London Java Community, and its Java Community Process Committee. He has been helping with the push to improve and complete the JSR 310 API and the expand community engagement with JSR 335. Converting My CPU to VHDL Via Logisim Evolution (for Eventual FPGA Board?)

14:52
This video shows the conversion process of my CPU to VHDL using Logisim Evolution. GHDL and GTKWave are used to compile, run, and display the results of the VHDL program. Once it's in VHDL, it could then be put in an FPGA and used in the "real world". This CPU is based on the 16 instruction microprocessor I designed for a homework assignment. This video is also useful to anyone who wonders "what can you do with ANDs, ORs, NANDs, and NORs anyway?" or anyone who wants to know how to simulate digital logic circuits. Or anyone wanting to know how to use Logisim. A Deep Dive into Java Performance Analysis with Advanced Toolsets

46:32
"Tackling performance issues on modern hardware has become a complex activity due to new multicore topologies, varieties of cache systems, and advanced microarchitecture optimizations. The choice of a proper tool can be a key to resolving critical bottlenecks. Some of the issues can be identified only with specialized tools such as those that have access to processor events. This session gives an overview of existing performance analysis tools for Java and highlights the enhanced analysis capabilities of two advanced toolsets: Oracle Solaris Performance Analyzer and Intel VTune Amplifier XE. It covers features of each, shares analysis methodologies that use these toolsets, and provides real case examples based on the speakers' experience." Copyright © 2013 Oracle and/or its affiliates. Virtual Android Device Emulators and Intel VT-x Technology

04:22
One of the great features of the Android Studio is being able to run your newly built app on a virtual device before installing it on a real device. I was not able to use that feature because the processor on my Dell Optiplex did not support the Intel Virtualization Technology. I am going to upgrade the CPU so I can use the Emulator feature. Please consider supporting PC Perspective and technical content through our Patreon: http://patreon.com/pcper Subscribe for more hardware videos! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=pcper Full story link: https://www.pcper.com/reviews/Processors/Dissecting-AMD-Zen-Architecture-Interview-David-Kanter Just before the weekend, Josh and I got a chance to speak with David Kanter about the AMD Zen architecture and what it might mean for the Ryzen processor due out in less than a month. For those of you not familiar with David and his work, he is an analyst and consultant on processor architectrure and design through Real World Tech while also serving as a writer and analyst for the Microprocessor Report as part of the Linley Group. If you want to see a discussion forum that focuses on architecture at an incredibly detailed level, the Real World Tech forum will have you covered - it's an impressive place to learn. David was kind enough to spend an hour with us to talk about a recently-made-public report he wrote on Zen. It's definitely a discussion that dives into details most articles and stories on Zen don't broach, so be prepared to do some pausing and Googling phrases and technologies you may not be familiar with. Still, for any technology enthusiast that wants to get an expert's opinion on how Zen compares to Intel Skylake and how Ryzen might fare when its released this year, you won't want to miss it.

Oracle Said It Will Cease All Efforts To Develop Technology Around The Itanium Chip

00:51
Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL) said that it will cease all efforts to develop technology around Intel's (NASDAQ:INTC) Itanium chip, which reportedly took Intel and Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ) by surprise. The company said its decision on the chip came after multiple conversations with Intel senior management, which made it clear that their strategic focus is on their x86 microprocessor and that Itanium was nearing the end of its life. HP issued a statement saying, "We are shocked that Oracle would put enterprises and governments at risk while costing them hundreds of millions of dollars in lost productivity in a shameless gambit to limit fair competition." Oracle has a potential upside of 14.6% based on a current price of $31.41 and an average consensus analyst price target of $36.
