5 AMAZING Ship Launch Videos

03:19
Ship launching is the process of transferring a vessel to the water. It is a naval tradition in many cultures, dating back thousands of years. It has been observed as a public celebration and a solemn blessing. Ship launching imposes stresses on the ship not met during normal operation, in addition to the size and weight of the vessel, and it represents a considerable engineering challenge as well as a public spectacle. The process also involves many traditions intended to invite good luck, such as christening by breaking a sacrificial bottle of champagne over the bow as the ship is named aloud and launched. There are three principal methods of conveying a new ship from building site to water, only two of which are called "launching." The oldest, most familiar, and most widely used is the end-on launch, in which the vessel slides down an inclined slipway, usually stern first. With the side launch, the ship enters the water broadside. The third method is float-out, used for ships that are built in basins or dry docks and then floated by admitting water into the dock. In all cases, heavy chains are attached to the ship and the drag effect is used to slow the vessel once afloat, until tugboats can move the hull to a jetty for fitting out. If You See Square Waves In The Ocean, Get Out Of The Water Immediately

03:40
Watch The Best Story On Youtube : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlp659DiW3g If You See Square Waves In The Ocean, Get Out Of The Water Immediately We’re used to the relaxing sounds of gentle waves hitting the shoreline, but did you know that there are different types of waves? I’m not talking about big waves like tsunamis, but a natural phenomenon known as square waves. These waves are called a “cross sea,” which forms when waves collide from different angles and form squares in the ocean. You might have never heard of or even seen waves like this, but they do exist, and they’re very dangerous. The pictures of square waves are enchanting. It almost feels these waves are inspired from a science fiction tale like the Matrix, in which the pieces of the world are about to fall apart. In areas where “cross seas” are common, residents would beg to differ. Île de Ré, an island off the west coast of France, experiencing square waves. When waves from one weather system continue to move in the same direction, even though there has been a shift in wind, it causes waves made by the new wind to run at an angle, creating a dangerous pattern. It looks harmless on the surface, but underwater, there are powerful currents that can capsize and throw large ships up in the air. The reason why is because boats are made to hit currents head on, but if waves are coming from all different angles, there’s no escape. Rare image of square waves. Cross seas also create extremely dangerous riptides, so make sure you’re not anywhere close to the water when this natural phenomenon occurs. Luckily, square waves don’t happen often, but it’s important to know what they mean and how to stay safe. A cross sea covering as far as the eye can see. 1. The convergence of the Baltic and North Seas This ocean phenomenon is believed to even be mentioned in the Quran. In Denmark, there’s a clear line that separates the Baltic and North Seas because these waters never mix together. The reason is because of the difference in densities in the two seas. Think of it like this: Why doesn’t oil and water mix? 2. Red Tide The Red Tide is also called “Algal Blooming.” Not all red tides are harmful to humans and marine life, but it’s best to stay out of these waters just in case. 3. Bioluminescent shores This mesmerizing display of bioluminescence was found in Tathra, New South Wales. These gorgeous nighttime beaches that can be found on every adventurer’s bucket list is caused by bioluminescent plankton in warm coastal waters. When these plankton are under stress, they make the water glow as a defence mechanism, attracting predators to eat the predator trying to eat them. Some people believe underwater circles were created by aliens. There’s a lot of mystery surrounding underwater crop circles after they were found near the waters of a Japanese island. Some think these intricate underwater sand designs were created by an extraterrestrial being, while others think this is the work of puffer fish. It’s more widely believed that these fish draw these circles and decorate them with shells to attract a mate. Did you know square waves exist? Deep Sea Fish Farming in Geodesic Domes: Upgrade

10:03
In this episode of Upgrade, Motherboard goes to Baja California, Mexico to get a firsthand look at these free floating pods, and to get an understanding for why we need better ways to cultivate our future food sources. Whether it’s found on a plate of sushi, grilled in our backyard, or thrown on pasta, seafood is a staple for many diets around the world, and demand is growing. And as the commercial seafood industry booms, fish stocks worldwide face perilous declines. We’ve surpassed our capacity to sustainably fish wild caught fish, shrimp, and mollusks from the ocean, and so we’ve turned to aquaculture, or fish farming, as a strategy to meet demand for our growing appetites for water-borne critters. The aquaculture industry is growing fast. According to the FAO, per capita production of seafood from aquaculture has increased 6.9 percent annually since 1970. Unfortunately for us and for our Earth, current methods of fish farming often involve crowded, tethered pens, which can have poor water circulation and contribute to the spread of disease, and put large amounts of environmental stress on the surrounding waterways. This is where Steve Page of Ocean Farm Technologies comes in. Taking inspiration from naturally-occurring schools of fish and Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic domes, Page co-designed the Aquapod, a free floating, untethered deep ocean fish habitat which reduces overcrowding, and creates less stress on surrounding environments due to its unique ability to change location with the ocean's current. Moving Sea Ice

00:51
Filmed during my 2010 North Pole Expedition, here are a variety of clips of moving Arctic Ocean sea ice. Pushed by winds, tides and ocean currents, it was amazing to watch these massive sheets of ice collide into one another at a rate that was surprisingly fast. At times, we were racing across sheets of ice before they disintegrated. Other times, we were able to watch as these large pans chugged and squeaked. I was constantly reminded of how mountain ranges are formed as on sheets bent, folded and crushed up against one another.

Sponges! | JONATHAN BIRD'S BLUE WORLD

09:44
A sponge might not look like much, but these simple animals with no brain or ability to move have lived on Earth for hundreds of millions of years. They can hunt prey and spawn, and Jonathan demonstrates how in this fascinating segment about the biology of sponges! ********************************************************************** If you like Jonathan Bird's Blue World, don't forget to subscribe! You can buy some Blue World T-shirts & Swag! http://www.blueworldtv.com/shop You can join us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/BlueWorldTV Twitter https://twitter.com/BlueWorld_TV Instagram @blueworldtv Web: http://www.blueworldTV.com ********************************************************************** When people think of a sponge, they usually imagine something like this: a cleaning sponge for washing the dishes…or for washing the car. Cleaning sponges are synthetic these days, but they used to come from the ocean. Back in the days before we had synthetic sponges for housework, cleaning sponges did come from the ocean. They were harvested by hard-hat divers walking along the ocean floor in heavy weighted boots with a rake-like tool to pluck the sponges off the bottom. It was a dangerous and difficult job. Bagfuls of sponges were lifted to the boat above. Immediately, the crew set to work cleaning the sponges. Then they were hung to air dry. After days or weeks at sea, when the boat was full of sponges, they were taken to shore, where they were auctioned to the highest bidder. Finally they were trimmed, sorted and sold to the public. Natural sponges are still harvested in nearly the same way today, but the synthetic sponge has spared the lives of countless ocean sponges! While an ocean sponge looks something like a weird plant, it's actually an animal. In fact, sponges are among the simplest multi-cellular animals on Earth. They live on the bottom of the ocean, attached to a surface and never moving because they can't walk or swim. Some are quite colorful, while others are drab. They also come in all shapes and sizes. There are tube sponges, vase sponges, barrel sponges, rope sponges, encrusting sponges and many other types. Sponges live from the frigid waters of the arctic and Antarctic, to the tropics. On many coral reefs, sponges dominate the sea floor and the drop off. One of the most common sponges on coral reefs is the barrel sponge. Barrel sponges grow to epic proportions, getting larger than a person! Although sponges can't walk or swim, they can feed. They do it by filtering tiny plankton from the water. A sponge is covered with small pores, called ostia, which lead to a system of internal canals and eventually out to one or more larger holes, called oscula. Within the canals of the sponge, chambers are lined with specialized cells called choanocytes, or collar cells. The collar cells have a sticky, funnel shaped collar and a hairlike whip, called a flagellum. The collar cells serve two purposes. First, they beat their flagella back and forth like fans to move water through the sponge. The water brings in nutrients and oxygen, while it carries out waste and carbon dioxide. Second, the sticky collars of the collar cells pick up tiny bits of planktonic food brought in with the water. Sponges are very effective filter feeders, since they are able to capture and eat particles as small as bacteria as well as much larger particles. They might not look like they are doing much, but a simple demonstration shows how effectively sponges can pump water. On a reef in the Caribbean, I make a dive with a syringe filled with a non-toxic dye called fluorescein. By squirting it around the base of some sponges, we can observe how the water is moving by watching what the dye does. Within only seconds, the dye is pumped through the sponges along with the water. As you can see, a sponge is a pretty good water pump, and also a good strainer. Any plankton that goes in with the water, won't come back out through the osculum. Tube sponges are even more spectacular to observe. They pump the dye so furiously that they look like a collection of miniature smoke stacks! Since sponges can't get together to reproduce, they spawn in a way similar to coral. The sperm is released into the water column by the male sponge and finds its way to the female sponges, where fertilization occurs internally. Eventually, the planktonic larvae are released from the female sponge and float around in the water column as plankton for only a few days. They then settle down and start growing. Sponges don't have many predators. There is not much nutritional value in a sponge and they're hard to digest. Hence, very few animals can eat sponges. But something was clearly eating this sponge! A sea turtle is the culprit. Sea turtles are one of the principal predators of sponges, along with a few species of fish and some invertebrates like nudibranchs.

A Moray Eel on the Move in the Eilat Red Sea

01:00
Moray Eels are usually seen hanging out, protected, in crevices with their main motion being "yawning" to move water over their gills to breath (00:04). In this video, we see how they swim when moving between hiding spots (00:15). In a snippet of 4x slow-motion, instant replay, we see how the eel appears to contour itself when swimming past an outcropping of coral (00:36). The eel in the video is a Yellowmouth/Starry Moray Eel (Gymnothorax nudivomer) and the video was recorded July 1, 2014 in the Coral Beach Nature Reserve in the Red Sea in Eilat, Israel.
