Who is a Product Manager and What do they do? [Career Insights]

07:54
The role of a product manager is crucial but also one of the least understood ones. What does a product manager really do? Is he more of a data analyst? Or someone who deals with the tech aspects of product, leading the team of engineers? Or does the product manager largely concern himself/herself with user experience, design or the overall business strategy? Mind-boggling isn't it? No wonder the role is difficult to understand for most. In this video, Ravijot Chugh, Co-Founder and Product Head at UpGrad, explains in detail the various responsibilities a Product Manager has, and that you need to execute to the best of your ability to be a good PM. If you want to bag one among the thousands of highly coveted openings for Product Managers between now and 2020 (only to grow exponentially even after), you need to start upgrading your existing skills and mastering these key skills. Product Managers are often referred to as mini-CEOs of the product. This is why, at tech companies, startups and large MNCs that are now diversifying, alike, the role of Product Managers is lucrative and one of the most important in the organization. Product Manager - 10 Essential Skills to Master (In 2018)

06:51
Product Management is a fast-growing and niche area to develop a career in. Naturally, there are some essential skills that can get you to be the very best of the lot. While the need for Product Managers is increasing by the day - in startups, tech companies and other large companies alike - the supply in India is currently only limited to a few thousands and compares poorly to countries such as the US. As per the Google and Accel Partners SAAS Report, there are roughly 36,000 Product Managers in India and the number is expected to increase to about 68,000 Product Managers by 2020. So, the need is apparent. But what does one have to do to get there? How to become a Product Manager? A common misconception is that Product Managers need to only master certain hard skills such as business understanding, tech and data. However, this would only mean the job is half done. To be a successful Product Manager you must have some soft skills too. These include communication, negotiation and leading without authority among many others. But don't worry about backgrounds, as Product Managers have been known to have diverse work and educational experience prior to making the transition into Product Management. Ravijot Chugh, Co-Founder and Product Head at UpGrad, explains in this 3rd part of the Careers-In-Shorts Series what these key skills are and how one can ace them to get on the road to being a great Product Manager. What Now? Becoming a manager is a part of some software developers. They work during some years, get to know the company, get some experience and they eventually become managers. However, the job of a manager includes a lot of different tasks than writing code: you need to manage people, have social skills, have the ability to manage projects, manage time, tasks, etc.~ With all of these tasks, writing code becomes almost secondary and can literally disappear from your day to day and regular tasks. So, what do you do after you become a manager and don't write code anymore? Will you lose your skills? How can you revert this situation? Should you even revert this situation? How to Plan a Product Management Career - Ramsey Pryor

04:12
In Chapter 20 of 22 of his 2010 Capture Your Flag interview with host Erik Michielsen, international Internet product management executive Ramsey Pryor provides a product management career development framework. Pryor lists three stages of product management. The first is a mainline product manager role that provides opportunity to give birth to a product, go to market, and learn from the experience. The second stage is a group product manager role that includes managing a product family, defining the company product approach, and managing a product manager team. The third is a company product executive role such as VP Product, that includes managing resources, budget, sales and marketing relationships at an executive-facing level. Within these three groups, Pryor highlights an additional division between new product managers, or trailblazers, and mature product managers, or optimizers. Pryor encourages product managers to get experience in both areas and develop a preference. Pryor earned an MBA from the University of Navarra IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain and a BA in Economics and Spanish from Northwestern University. Product Manager vs. Product Owner Roles

02:06
This is a snippet from 280 Group's Agile Certified Product Manager and Product Owner - Online Course and Exam Learn More About The Online Course: http://280.gr/2zrnRC5 To be totally clear, this is a discussion about roles and NOT titles. For example, your TITLE can be Product Manager while performing the ROLE of a Product Owner. Product Management is a big discipline that covers a vast range of activities and responsibilities. This means being the market expert. You own the product strategy which drives the vision and roadmap. You manage the product throughout its lifecycle. And you ensure that there is a business justification for your decisions. You present the need. Your focus is the problem space and you avoid defining the product. You make the tough decisions and tradeoffs between features, schedule and cost. Ultimately, you deliver differentiated products to market. In some companies, the role is so big, that different aspects of it are split between different people. On the flip side, this is how product ownership is defined. You maximize the value of the product and the work of the development team. And you are the sole person responsible for managing the product backlog. You need to make sure the backlog is visible and understood by the entire development team. And all of these tasks for a particular project or slice of a project are the responsibility of one person. When you map the roles side-by-side, you can see that the product owner is responsible for the detailed work. You can see how closely they work with the development team. There are a lot of tasks that overlap with product management responsibilities. To allocate these, you may need to adjust for individual strengths and weaknesses. Some tasks are outside the scope of what Agile defines as that of the Product Owner. Many organizations struggle with dividing their responsibilities and if someone has all of these assigned to them, the workload becomes overwhelming. As a result, the focus is on the urgent and strategic focus is greatly diminished or lost.

What is a 'Product Owner'? - Scrum Guide

02:30
http://tv.ssw.com/what-is-a-product-owner The 2013 Scrum Guide definition of the 'Product Owner', in video form! http://rules.ssw.com.au/Management/RulesToBetterProductOwners/Pages/default.aspx (from the 2013 Scrum Guide:) The Product Owner The Product Owner is responsible for maximizing the value of the product and the work of the Development Team. How this is done may vary widely across organizations, Scrum Teams, and individuals. The Product Owner is the sole person responsible for managing the Product Backlog. Product Backlog management includes: Clearly expressing Product Backlog items; Ordering the items in the Product Backlog to best achieve goals and missions; Ensuring the value of the work the Development Team performs; Ensuring that the Product Backlog is visible, transparent, and clear to all, and shows what the Scrum Team will work on next; and, Ensuring the Development Team understands items in the Product Backlog to the level needed. The Product Owner may do the above work, or have the Development Team do it. However, the Product Owner remains accountable. The Product Owner is one person, not a committee. The Product Owner may represent the desires of a committee in the Product Backlog, but those wanting to change a backlog item's priority must convince the Product Owner. For the Product Owner to succeed, the entire organization must respect his or her decisions. The Product Owner's decisions are visible in the content and ordering of the Product Backlog. No one is allowed to tell the Development Team to work from a different set of requirements, and the Development Team isn't allowed to act on what anyone else says.

UW Certificate in Software Product Management

01:57
Adam Grupp, an instructor for the Certificate in Software Product Management, explains what students gain from the program and how they can apply it to their careers. Learn more here: https://www.pce.uw.edu/certificates/software-product-management Video Transcript: Software product management is really about beginning with a customer and a problem — defining that, developing it and then taking that into a development phase where you identify opportunities to solve that problem that accompany business opportunity. In the program, we start you off with a case where you work with a team all year long to develop that customer problem and the concept for your solution, and from there you work with the team to refine requirements. And by the end of the year, students have worked through the full process of defining an opportunity, developing the solution concept, refining those priorities, and taking it to market. Students come out of this program with a clear sense for what it means to prioritize, to think critically about product and, ultimately, to pivot when things have to change. It's an incredibly challenging thing to do when you're the product manager — the CEO of the product — but you get a chance to practice that here in this program in a safe environment with lots of direct feedback from your instructors and from your classmates. We've seen many of our students use this program as a springboard into a product manager role that they didn't already have or to help reinforce their success as a product manager in a current role. We also have, as instructors, tried to be resources to our students as they graduate and move on and to be a part of their network moving forward to help them identify opportunities and then to be a part of the product manager community here in Seattle. Our alumni of the program work all over the Puget Sound region in a variety of companies: Boeing, Starbucks, Microsoft, Tableau, you name it. What we see is that people come out of this program with a lot more confidence in their abilities, a lot more of the knowhow and the acumen required to be a successful product manager and, frankly, a network of motivated product managers, who come from this same program, who are out there to do cool things and take the world by storm.

Working With Your Team As A Product Manager To Develop Software Customers Love

01:15
As a product manager, you're an important member of a team. It's essential that you engage with the engineers, scrum master, designers, and others as a peer and get your team involved in the ideation process at the start. If your engineers and designers are not involved in coming up with the solutions they'll work on, they'll feel disenfranchised and you'll miss out on at least 50% of the value they can bring to a team. Engineers and designers typically come up with the best solutions to customer challenges. It's a product manager's job to communicate the challenges that the team should try to find solutions for, and then, as a team, you work to find a solution to that customer pain point. Nick Gavronsky is a product manager at Betterment. He has worked on the consumer application and is now leading the product effort on their advisor products, which they sell to financial advisory firms. Product Manager Roles Gap

02:15
Many executives make the mistake of thinking of product management roles as tactical functions, so they hire or promote people who are task-oriented and internally focused — doers and tinkerers, rather than thinkers and planners. The best product managers are marketers and strategists. Instead of asking, "What can I do to the product?" the right people in product management roles ask, "What can I do to capture the customer?" They are leaders who function as entrepreneurial CEOs of their product offering with the responsibility for managing revenue and profitability. And they are planners capable of managing the product portfolio throughout the life cycle from innovation to end of life.
