How Caves, Arches, Stacks and Stumps are formed- labelled diagram and explanation
Detailed diagram explaining the formation of the following coastal features: Caves, arches, stacks and stumps. The explanation covers the sequential formation of these coastal features by explaining how the waves are refracted onto the sides of the headland and enlarge weaknesses gradually over time. The diagram includes hand drawn elements which make it ideal for helping students revise for their examinations. Please visit my teaching website: http://www.thegeographeronline.net

A Giant Anemone In Deep Ocean Stumps Scientists
The Okeanos Explorer team recently spotted a ‘whopping big’ anemone estimated to be about 8 to 12 inches across; it also had unusual rounded-tipped tentacles. NOAA researchers with the Okeanos Explorer expedition recently spotted an anemone which one member called “whopping big.”  According to an online post, the sighting occurred on July 30.  Footage of the event shows a white anemone, estimated to be around 8 to 12 inches across.  Researchers can also be heard marveling at its unusual rounded-tipped tentacles with a brown point in the middle of each one.  This anemone was found during an exploration of the Alba Seamount which has been dated back to the Cretaceous period.  The footage was gathered as part of the NOAA’s Deepwater Wonders of Wake mission exploring the "deep-sea ecosystems and seafloor in and around the Wake Atoll Unit of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument."

Caves, Arches, Stacks and Stumps
How these Features are formed. Transcript: There is some dramatic scenery across the world’s ever-changing coastlines such as the Azure Window in Malta which collapsed in March of twenty-seventeen. This is one example of an arch and a stack but how are these made? Firstly, there is a headland made of hard rock. These have natural weaknesses. These are then attacked by various methods of erosion: Hydraulic action, where the sheer force of the waves pounding against the rock breaks rocks off, and abrasion where by the small particles that the sea carries are slammed against the cliff face. These gradually open some small caves in the rocks. These then are further widened by the processes of erosion on both sides of the headland and join to form an arch. The arch narrows over the gap until eventually, the arch collapses to leave a stack. This stack is undercut by the same processes which causes it to shrink, until eventually it is just a little stump.

Sea Creature’s Classification Stumps Scientists
A mushroom-shaped sea creature was discovered off the coast of Australia, but now that they have it researchers aren’t quite sure what to do with it. Several mushroom-shaped sea creatures that were discovered off the coast of Australia in 1986 and subsequently preserved are confusing researchers who aren’t quite sure how to classify them. They don’t appear to have so much as a twig on the tree of life. To classify animals of the world, scientists use a system of divisions each known as a phylum, and subdivisions called classes. Generally, new discoveries fit into one of the established categories, but not in this case. The specimens are tiny, measuring only a few millimeters, and show some similarities to both the comb jelly clan and the grouping that includes sea anemones and corals. Unfortunately, they don’t have enough in common with either to comfortably fit into their Phylae. For one, they lack tentacles and organs devoted to senses, ruling them out as candidates for inclusion with the corals and anemones. They’re also without the movement-enabling hairs called cilia, making them incompatible with comb jellies and the like. Besides that type of confusion, the sea dweller itself is quite simple. It has a single opening for food and waste and a digestive network. All of that is encased in a gelatinous body. Unfortunately the samples were not preserved in such a way that allows for genetic analysis, so the researchers have published their paper partly as ‘a call for help’.

Hexagonal Basalt: MYSTERY SOLVED! "mountains are tree stumps" claim Refuted
Cracking the Giant’s Causeway Solving a 300 year old geology problem using kitchen materials! by Stephen Morris, J. Tuzo Wilson Professor of Geophysics, University of Toronto Physicists have cracked the mystery behind the strange and uncannily well-ordered hexagonal columns found at such popular tourist sites as Northern Ireland's Giant's Causeway and California's Devil's Postpile, using water, corn starch and a heat lamp. Using a combination of field observation, experiments and mathematical theory, they have solved the problem of what decides the size of the columns. The Giant’s Causeway, a World Heritage Site, is a spectacular outcrop of uncannily regular lava columns on the coast of Northern Ireland. How did it form? This question has deep roots in the history of geology and geomorphology. The mostly hexagonal columns were carved out by cooling cracks, which became more regular as they advanced. A similar ordering process is found in the permafrost cracks, driven by freezing and thawing, that decorate large swathes of the polar regions of Earth and Mars. Surprisingly, these effects may be captured by a simple laboratory experiment you can (almost) do in your kitchen. This talk will examine the pleasures and pitfalls of such “tabletop geomorphology” experiments. "The size of the columns, which varies from site to site between a few inches and a few yards, is primarily determined by the speed at which lava from a volcanic eruption cools," says U of T physics professor Stephen Morris, who supervised the thesis project of PhD student Lucas Goehring. Cooling lava sometimes forms strange column-shaped formations with a remarkable degree of order. The most famous of these hexagonal columns are found at the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland, where they are said to be the work of Finn MacCool, an Irish giant. Using a combination of field observation, experiments and mathematical theory provided by Harvard University professor L. Mahadevan, they have solved the problem of what decides the size of the columns. The key to understanding the size of the columns was to reproduce the phenomenon in the lab. Using a mixture of water and corn starch – which cracks as it dries out and forms very similar columns – they carefully controlled the drying process, and established a relationship between the size of the columns and speed with which the drying front moved. Goehring also visited several sites around the world and measured certain markings on the sides of lava columns, which were used to deduce the speed with which they formed as the lava cooled. "Putting all of these pieces together showed that the columns are formed by the same process in starch as in lava," says Morris. "We identified the special ratio of speed, column size and diffusion rate that is the same for all cases, finding that the slower the cooling process, the larger the resulting columns would be." Their results allow for the deduction of the cooling rate that produces these structures and the comparison of different sites. They also enable the prediction of the shapes of other fracture networks such as drying mud, cracking paint or the patterns of fracture in permafrost. "It's always a delight to be able to think about a beautiful natural system and even nicer to solve an ancient problem with such a simple experiment," says Morris. The findings appear in the Dec. 16 online issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The project was funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. full cited scientific journal https://www.physics.utoronto.ca/~nonlin/PNASpress/PNASpress.html stay tuned to Lifting The Veil to recieve updates on all my full video presentations and articles for as little as a dollar a month on my page at www.Patreon.com/LiftingTheVeil for more content. How to: Killing, Removing, rotting out tree stumps w/ Epsom Salt (environmentally better)
DeWalt 20v Li-Ion Hammer Drill (Amazon Link): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DR90MM6/?ref=idea_lv_dp_ov_d Irwin Tools 17" long (1" wide) auger bit (Amazon Link): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004YO68/?ref=idea_lv_dp_ov_d Moore, Oklahoma - Removing tree stumps naturally! This method speeds up the decomposition and rotting (rot) process. Beats spending big bucks calling a landscaping service to remove a stump that you can do for pennies. And, it is more environmentally friendlier than using oil based fuels and chemicals. They say it can take months...we'll see! Burning it out is possible and some even use diesel fuel. But, this way seems like it might work. Here is what I did: I bought the Epsom Salt (which is magnesium sulfate) at Walmart for around $2. I drilled down about 10-12" into the stump (mostly along the edges). I then poured the Epsom salt into the holes and left a lot around the edges and top. The stump was then covered in a small piece of Visqueen. I had a heavy clay planter with a Hibiscus plant to hold it down along with some old pieces of 2x4". The Basics of Using Blending Stumps
Welcome back everyone to The Basics of Using Blending Stumps Other Places to Find my Art Website: http://www.tylersartshack.com Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/tylersartshack Twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/TylersArtShack Google+: https://plus.google.com/115405344518849808905/posts Deviant: http://tylersartshack.deviantart.com Here is a quick video about the basic use of blending stumps. I made a rough sketch of clouds that need to be touched up. The use of a blending stump does a great job at this. I started out by blending out the dark areas of the sky to clean things up. I will also use the blending stump to start smoothing out the bottoms of the clouds. This will help to build up the contrast between the bottom and the top of the clouds. I made my sky darker on the top of the page than I did on the bottom. They sky will naturally tend to lighten on the horizon. Once everything is smoothed over, my next step is to use an eraser and bring out some highlights. This is not all that essential to how to use a blending stump but the materials combined help to really produce a nice piece of artwork. I hope you all enjoyed this short demo on blending stumps and thanks for watching!! Artist: Dano Songs Song: Helium Hues Music can be found at DanoSongs.com
