[Wikipedia] The Delineator

02:07
The Delineator was an American women's magazine of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, founded by the Butterick Publishing Company in 1869 under the name The Metropolitan Monthly. Its name was changed in 1875. The magazine was published on a monthly basis in New York City. In November 1926, under the editorship of Mrs. William Brown Meloney, it absorbed The Designer, founded in 1887 and published by the Standard Fashion Company, a Butterick subsidiary. One of The Delineator's managing editors was writer Theodore Dreiser, who worked with other members of the staff such as Sarah Field Splint (later known for writing cookbooks ) and Arthur Sullivant Hoffman. The Delineator featured the Butterick sewing patterns and provided an in-depth look at the fashion of the day. Butterick also produced quarterly catalogs of fashion patterns in the 1920s and early 1930s. In addition to clothing patterns, the magazine published photos and drawings of embroidery and needlework that could be used to adorn both clothing and items for the home. It also included articles on all forms of home decor. It also published fiction, including many short stories by L. Frank Baum. It ceased publication in 1937. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Delineator Please support this channel and help me upload more videos. Home Sewing Fashions: "Butterick Clothes Ups Of (1942)" DIY Patterns

09:42
This video shows different fashions from butterick clothes in 1942. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ebenezer_Butterick Ebenezer Butterick (29 May 1826 – 31 March 1903) was an American tailor, inventor, manufacturer, and fashion business executive, born in Sterling, Massachusetts. Life and work He is regarded as the inventor, together with his wife Ellen Augusta Pollard Butterick, of tissue paper dress patterns offered in multiple standard sizes, also known as graded sewing patterns, which the couple began selling in 1863. The product revolutionized home sewing. The premise of graded sewing patterns reportedly came from Mrs. Butterick's frustration with contemporary sewing patterns offered in only one size (frequently a different size for each pattern). Unless the intended wearer happened to match the size of the pattern, this necessitated manual resizing of the pieces (using paper, or directly on the fabric with wax chalk) before sewing could commence - a laborious and frustrating process. Offering each design in a graded series of standard-sized patterns would eliminate the need for such extensive pre-work. As a bespoke tailor, Mr Butterick was familiar with drafting custom patterns to fit different individuals, as well as the process of grading a "stock" pattern to a custom size. He began work on the templates, ultimately settling for the same thin tissue paper used by several pattern firms of the era for the patterns themselves, which had the advantages that it was thin enough to cut several dozen layers simultaneously (facilitating mass production) and could be easily folded and shipped across the country. The Buttericks' graded patterns for home sewers became massively popular, as they made modern fashions and styles accessible to the rapidly expanding lower middle class; people that could not afford to purchase custom-made clothing in the latest style each season, but still wished to be fashionably dressed. The patterns were priced at 25 to 75 cents each, depending on complexity, making them an expensive indulgence for the working classes (who typically earned $1–2 per day in 1870 [1]) and out of reach for the truly poor. The Butterick family began selling their patterns from their Sterling, Massachusetts home, in 1863, and the business expanded so quickly that, in one year, they had a factory at 192 Broadway Street in New York City. At first producing only boy's and men's clothing patterns, the Buttericks expanded to dresses and women's clothes in 1866. Eventually, women's patterns would be offered in 13 sizes for dresses, coats and blouses, and 5 sizes for skirts. The Delineator, August 1894 cover In 1867 Butterick began publishing a magazine to promote their patterns, the Ladies Quarterly of Broadway Fashions, which was followed, in 1868, with the monthly Metropolitan. Both magazines offered fashion news and advice, as well as mail order services for Butterick's designs. In 1873, E. Butterick & Co. began publishing The Delineator, which, by the turn of the century, became the premiere women's fashion magazine in the US. Mrs. Butterick died in 1871. By 1876, E. Butterick & Co. had 100 branch offices and 1,000 agencies throughout the United States and Canada, and was becoming steadily more popular internationally, especially in Europe. In 1881, the company reorganized as Butterick Publishing Company, and Ebenezer became its secretary, serving in this role until 1894. In 1903, the Butterick building was designed and constructed on Spring Street and MacDougal Street in downtown Manhattan. The same year, Ebenezer Butterick died in Brooklyn, New York, aged 76. On June 30, 1907, the New York Times published a story concerning the electric sign on the western side of the Butterick Building: "[T]he Butterick Company has been moved to announce that the sign really is the largest in the world and to give some interesting facts about it. The initial B is 68 feet (21 m) high, about the height of an ordinary five-story building. The smaller letters are 50 feet (15 m) high and 5 feet (1.5 m) wide. About 1,400 electric lights are used for the illumination. It practically requires all the time of the one man to watch the sign and replace burned out lights."

Audiobook Joseph C Lincoln – Cape Cod Stories

05:47:31
Audiobook full length. This book (eleven short stories) was also published under the title of “The Old Home House”. Joseph Crosby Lincoln (1870 – 1944) was an American author of novels, poems, and short stories, many set in a fictionalized Cape Cod. Lincoln's work frequently appeared in popular magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post and The Delineator.... Lincoln claimed that he was satisfied "spinning yarns" that made readers feel good about themselves and their neighbors. Two of his stories have been adapted to film. Lincoln's literary career celebrating "old Cape Cod" can partly be seen as an attempt to return to an Eden from which he had been driven by family tragedy. His literary portrayal of Cape Cod can also be understood as a pre-modern haven occupied by individuals of old Yankee stock which was offered to readers as an antidote to an America that was undergoing rapid modernization, urbanization, immigration, and industrialization.... Lincoln died in 1944, at the age of 73, in Winter Park, Florida. 00:00:00.000 : 01 Two Pairs Of Shoes 00:34:44.028 : 02 The Count And The Manager 01:03:49.040 : 03 The South Shore Weather Bureau 01:31:12.001 : 04 The Dog Star 02:03:24.017 : 05 The Mare And The Motor 02:28:39.026 : 06 The Mark On The Door 03:06:01.028 : 07 The Love Of Lobelia 'Ankins 03:35:05.037 : 08 The Meanness Of Rosy 04:06:56.010 : 09 The Antiquers 04:34:31.021 : 10 His Native Heath 05:07:23.032 : 11 Jonesy Audiobook in the public domain

Sarah S. Stilwell

03:16
Sarah S. Stilwell (Weber) or SSS. 1878-1939 Sarah Stilwell began her studies with Howard Pyle at Drexel University in Philadelphia in 1898 and 1899. Her talent for illustration was noticed early by magazine art editors. By 1898, while she was still at Drexel, the art editor of Collier's Weekly picked one of her drawings to be painted and, finally, published. Sarah worked at Drexel with Pyle until 1900. She spent the summers of 1898 and 1899 at Pyle's Chadds Ford summer school. When Pyle moved to Wilmington in 1900, she also moved there, and began her busy career as an illustrator while still working under Pyle's tutelage. By 1910, the artist was married and living in Philadelphia, where she spent the rest of her life. Sarah Stilwell illustrated a wide variety of stories for both magazines and books. From 1903 to 1921, she also did many covers, primarily for the Saturday Evening Post and Collier's. Harper's Bazaar, Delineator, and Country Gentleman were among the other periodicals for which she often illustrated. As early as 1904, she was involved in book illustration, making drawings for The Luxury of Children and Some Other Luxuries by Edward Stanford Martin. She also illustrated Mother's Hero by Ethel C. Dow and Kiddie Kar Book by Richard J. Walsh as well as both wrote and illustrated The Musical Tree, a children's songbook. Her production dropped drastically after 1925. An exotic flair pervades most of Weber's work. Aubrey Beardsley or Art Nouveau seems to have influenced her, especially during 1910-1920. Her illustrations primarily depicted children, fairies, other characters of fantasy, and women. The dramatic gestures of her figures or their placement in the total composition commanded sweeping lines and curves so that an overall decorative effect was achieved. The music is Mock Morris by Percy Grainger, played by Martin Jones.

Susan and the Mermaid

01:21
"Susan and the Mermaid" is available at https://www.createspace.com/3511679/. Lost for almost a century, "Susan and the Mermaid" is the rediscovered tale of a magic ring, an underwater kingdom, and a wise old woman who knew how to make her granddaughter's dreams come true. It's a tale that rivals "Alice in Wonderland" for imagination ... and it was written and illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith, whose own life story reads like a work of fiction. Smith was an author, artist, and storyteller who divided her time between London, New York, and the island of Jamaica. During the early 1900s, she traveled with some of the world's most famous writers and performers, including poet and playwright William Butler Yeats, popular actress Ellen Terry (the Elizabeth Taylor of her day), and Bram Stoker, the author of "Dracula." Smith published three books by the time she was twenty, and her work won critical acclaim around the world. True fame and fortune eluded her, though, and she died virtually unknown in 1951. Twenty years after her death, however, an old card deck she created was republished, and millions of modern tarot enthusiasts were welcomed into Smith's world of magic, mystery, and metaphysics. "Susan and the Mermaid" offers a new and unexpected glimpse into that realm, where the border between reality and fantasy blurs, and ethereal creatures lead ordinary people into extraordinary adventures. This story first appeared in the Christmas 1912 edition of "The Delineator," a magazine for mothers and their children. This version reproduces the original text and images, just as they looked at the time. This book also takes the discovery a step further, by offering a close-up look at the dozens of full-color illustrations Smith painted to accompany the story. "Susan and the Mermaid" is a treasure recovered from the vaults of history. It's a gift from the past, from an artist who lives on in the words and pictures she left behind.

Rick with Smart Drive Test talking to you today about parallel parking between cones. I had a comment from nikelnichol. I also had a comment from Nicolas Mazer and both of those smart drivers wanted me to do a video on how to park between cones for the purposes of passing a road test. About a year ago, I also had requests from WorstNightmare666 who also wanted me to do this. And I should have done this a lot earlier. So I do apologize for the delay in getting this video up for you. So that's what we're gonna work on today. Now the first thing you're gonna need is you're going to need those 36 inch tall, 1 meter tall pylons. Sometimes called delineators. And you could pick those up at a rental shop for about $10 for four of them for the day So they're inexpensive. Now parallel parking between cones for the purposes of passing a road test. If you haven't seen the parallel park video already about parking behind a single vehicle or between two vehicles, definitely have a look at that. I'll put the card up in the corner for you and have a look at that video. Now parallel parking between cones tends to be a little bit easier because you got better reference points. And we're gonna go over that now. The first thing you need to do, is you need to set up the cones. You want to set up the cones, as you can see here in the video, approximately a foot wider than the width of your vehicle. You want to put the cone 12 inches or 20 centimeters on either side of the car; on the passenger side and the driver's side. And for the length of the vehicle you want to put the cones one and a half vehicle lengths. So simply park your vehicle where you want it to end up when you finish your parallel park and place the cones at the front and then approximately another half a length behind the vehicle. Put the cones behind the vehicle at approximately the same distance on the driver side and the passenger side. As you get better and better and more comfortable with parallel parking, you can move the cones in and narrow the space that you're going to park into. But for most of these driving centers, the cones are going to be one and a half vehicle length distance between the front and the back. And the reason for that is because any tighter than that and it's just too difficult for new drivers to be able to do that. So that's how you set up the cones. It's not a specific feet and inches or a specific measurement for setting the cones up. Just put them around your vehicle and make them relative. And as I said, as you get better and better and you're working on this aspect of preparation for your road test, just move the cones in a closer and essentially that's all it is. So what we're gonna do here is we're gonna hook up the cameras--the other camera--so you can see everything going on here, and we're gonna do a couple of parallel parks. And I'll go through it step-by-step and give you instructions on how to do this. Good luck on your road test. *************** www.smartdrivetest.com www.facebook.com/smartdrivetest www.twitter.com/smartdrivetest www.instagram.com/smartdrivetest/ Music: BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack - Epic Song

Cape Cod Stories | Joseph Crosby Lincoln | Humorous Fiction, Short Stories | Soundbook | 3/4

Cape Cod Stories | Joseph Crosby Lincoln | Humorous Fiction, Short Stories, Single Author Collections | Audiobook full unabridged | English | 3/4 Content of the video and Sections beginning time (clickable) - Chapters of the audiobook: please see First comments under this video. (Summary by Wikipedia and David Wales) This is a Librivox recording. If you want to volunteer please visit https://librivox.org/
