Washington D.C. in a Day (4K Vlog)

16:31
A late 3rd anniversary trip, we decided to head out to Washington D.C. for a day trip to see the first day of the cherry blossoms peak bloom. This video was shot in 4K (as is normal for our channel), but we exported it in ProRes, so the quality is near lossless for a compressed file. We hope you enjoy as we have fun around D.C., see the cherry blossoms, visit the Smithsonian, make dumb jokes about the Washington Monument and check out where they filmed some of Marvel's biggest films. 🎧📚Get TWO free audiobooks: http://amzn.to/2fjb6Mw 🔨🏆Support the production of this content: https://www.patreon.com/Geekritique Jenn's Socials: Twitter - https://twitter.com/geekritiquer Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/geekritiquer/ Dakota's Socials: Twitter - https://twitter.com/geekritique_dak Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/geekritique/ 🎥👾Geekritique Shop - Our Top Recommendations: https://Amazon.com/shop/Geekritique 👩‍💻🕹Come join our brand new Discord Server: https://discord.gg/sBtw5fA 🎶🎺Music: -LAKEY INSPIRED - I Found Me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpgYzL3opqM -Kevin MacLeod - Fanfare for Space https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvjI_Yg1w4A -Sappheiros - Lights https://soundcloud.com/sappheirosmusic -LAKEY INSPIRED - Going Up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLNczbHKTpQ 🏅✨Official Sponsors: Broken Chain Studios: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpxrlOKRThWO6aBynIsibWQ

Space Shuttle Orbiter Discovery on display at the Smithsonian Steven F Udvar-Hazy Center

02:35
We watched as Space Shuttle Discovery left the Kennedy Space Center to be displayed at the Smithsonian. Our coverage continues with a visit to see Discovery on display at the Steven F Udvar-Hazy Center. We also compare some views at the museum today with views seen in a 1994 NASA employee tour of one of the Orbiter Processing Facilities (OPF). There is also comparison of the European Spacelab at the musuem, and in 1994 in a Kennedy Space Center high bay. Video by Don Gworek. How to Get into Nearly 1,500 Museums for Free for One Special Day

01:03
If you’re looking to spend a free Night at the Museum, just watch the movie. If you’re not looking to spend anything at all, just head to a museum on September 22nd. Nearly 1500 museums are free nationwide as part of Smithsonian Magazine’s 14th annual Museum Day, according to CNN. Always wanted to check out an exhibit? Easy. Hop on Smithsonian magazine’s website, search for a museum you want to visit, enter your email, name and download your ticket. NBC New York says tickets are good for two people. Speaking of, New York has over 100 participating museums, according to Lonely Planet. They add there are participating museums in all 50 states as well as D.C. CNN says you need to be choosy, since museum-goers are only allowed to download one ticket per email address. If you miss Museum Day, the website might provide some travel inspiration for an upcoming trip. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a selfie in front of a famous picture is priceless. Why Do Deep Sea Creatures Look So Scary?

02:54
Deep sea creatures like the anglerfish look terrifying. Turns out, there’s a reason for that. It was in part drawn from a paper that is widely shared, but not largely accepted in today's marine biology community. Many thanks to Dr. Craig McClain for pointing it out. There is a lot we don't know about deep sea gigantism, but according to Dr. McClain, it may occur because of the lack of food in the deep sea. Larger creatures are more metabolically efficient and better at resisting starvation than smaller creatures. Accuracy is extremely important to me, and I will do my best to try to prevent an error like this from slipping in again. I have removed the relevant section at 2:11. Fire at the National Museum of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro - Why We Need to Fund Museums

10:29
On September 2, 2018, the National Museum of Brazil was destroyed in a horrible fire. 200 years of scientific research, history and culture were lost. This monumental event was felt all over the world, and it reminded us how important it is to fund cultural institutions. Without proper funding, we can't protect our cultural heritage. So here is my rant. My plea. Please, fund museums. In any way that you can. FUND MUSEUMS. American Shopping Malls - Now & Then - From the Abandoned to Thriving

09:16
The father of the American shopping mall, the Austrian-born architect Victor Gruen, envisioned the mall as a sort of European-style town center for the American suburbs. He saw malls as climate-controlled Main Streets, with post offices, supermarkets, and cafes, set amidst larger complexes with schools, parks, medical centers, and residences. You’d hardly need to drive at all. Gruen found cars repulsive. But only part of Gruen’s vision caught on: the climate-controlled gray box, famous for encouraging car culture rather than stopping it. In 1978, the elderly Gruen railed against what his idea had become. “I would like to take this opportunity to disclaim paternity once and for all,” he said. “I refuse to pay alimony to those bastard developments. They destroyed our cities.” - Smithsonian Magazine Read More: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/innovation/transformation-american-shopping-mall-180964837/?utm_content=Derelict-Doug&utm_medium=Derelict-Doug Keep Up-To-Date: https://derelictdoug.net Follow Me On Twitter: https://twitter.com/Derlict_doug

Mandela Effect New Study Into The Mona Lisa's Smile Has German Scientists Scratching Their Heads!!

10:01
Laura Geggel at LiveScience reports that researchers at the Institute for Frontier Areas of Psychology and Mental Health in Freiburg, Germany, conducted two experiments on “Mona Lisa” viewers. First, they showed participants the original “Mona Lisa” along with eight variations of the painting with the curvature of the mouth altered into happy and sad configurations. Those nine total paintings were shown in random order to participants 30 times, with the volunteers reporting whether the face was happy or sad and their confidence in that judgement. Geggel reports that the 12 participants identified the happy faces more quickly and more accurately than the sad expressions. The original version of the painting was placed in the happy category by the participants close to 100 percent of the time. “We were very surprised to find out that the original ‘Mona Lisa’ is almost always seen as being happy,” Jürgen Kornmeier, lead author of study says in a press release. “That calls the common opinion among art historians into question.” Read more: http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/is-the-mona-lisa-smiling-new-study-180962580/#wjj1fKyybH7TyJiL.99 Give the gift of Smithsonian magazine for only $12! http://bit.ly/1cGUiGv Follow us: @SmithsonianMag on Twitter Follow me on Steemit: https://steemit.com/@moneybags73 Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Moneybags733?lang=en Link to patreon to help support my channel and the thousands hours of research I do Thanks: https://www.patreon.com/MoneyBags73?alert=2 Please vote and check out my other voting videos here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLSFBGkImMYPQn_JLYF4EZ9h9Cvor8zsbg

Doug Aitken Interview: The Conditions We Live Under

08:47
“To reflect the present in a new way is to me one of the goals of creating things.” The iconic artist and filmmaker Doug Aitken here discusses the unique and valuable time we’re living in now, which forces us to innovate how we work – and survive. “The way we absorb information and experience is so radically different than in decades in the past.” The present-day ‘information landscape’ is fascinating to Aitken, who sees many possibilities in the organic space versus the digital space: “It opens up a landscape, which is much more non-linear… the idea of the straight story becomes increasingly broken, and things are fragmented.” He furthermore considers this new landscape to be polyphonic – where many different things happen at once on many different mediums: “Each of us are authoring our own film in real-time.” This, Aitken feels, allows us to “explore narratives and storytelling in ways that are unique, and to understand the complexity of what’s around us in ways that are very different than the straight story that we’ve often grown up with.” Our responsibility then, is to “address this condition that we’re living in… to create questions but also to create tools and different perspectives and different outlooks.” Doug Aitken (b. 1968) is an American artist and filmmaker, who explores every medium from film and installations to architectural inventions. Aitken’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions around the world, such as at the Whitney Museum of Modern Art and MoMA in New York, Serpentine Gallery in London and Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. He is the recipient of prestigious awards such as the International Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1999 for the installation ‘Electric Earth’ and the 2013 Smithsonian Magazine American Ingenuity Award: Visual Arts. A Tragedy in Kachin Village, Myanmar - the Best of Jade deposits in the World!

15:23
Credit to : A Tragedy of Kachin Village (English Version) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhyWfu5xNRI&index=8&list=PLFKtOH4SqdJX8cbyafUX23iY9lEVpQhp0 subscribe FLEGT ALARM : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJh14JCxgZZ6g454kctE67A Most jade has a bright green color associated with jade jewelry, though it comes in a host of other colors such as white, black, yellow, red, blue, and lavender—depending on the chemical composition of the stone. Variations of iron content in jadeite can produce brownish-red, dark green or lavender hues. White translucent jade is highly prized. Green jadeite gets its green color from the element chromium. The most prized jadeite is translucent, emerald green jade known as "Imperial jade." Jade Business : The jade world is hard for outsiders to understand. Jade lacks clear, well-understood standards of quality as is the case with diamonds. A rating system exists that evaluates jade on scale from "A" for "exceptional" to "E" for "acceptable" based on tone, texture, translucence and color but it is not widely followed or recognized. Many aspects of the traditionally jade business are like a guessing game. "Rough jade," wrote Timothy Green in Smithsonian magazine, "has an opaque skin, rather like the shell of a nut, caused by oxidation. To the untutored eye it looks just like any other large stone and the true contents is very hard to detect. That uncertainty is the very essence of the jade game...The logical approach would be to cut open the [rough jade boulder] immediately, but that would spoil the fun—and the potential for profit. The trick, for both buyer and seller, is to stake their judgement on three crucial points: How true is the color throughout the stone? How translucent is it? And are there cracks and flaws within?" To determine the value of the jade a small "window" is cut into the skin of the boulder. Buyers use flashlights and spotlights to try and determine the depth and translucence of the color. One buyer told Smithsonian magazine, "Even the best appraiser can see only 70 percent of the value of the stones. He can see the quality of color but not quantity of the color.” Another buyer, with 21 years experience, said, “You need a good memory, because you must study every piece you buy and remember how the crust of the rough looked, and the color distribution when it was cut. Then, if you see a similar stone, you apply that knowledge. I often recall a stone I saw ten years ago." In many places jade is still changed hands using an ancient Chinese ritual to keep the bidding price secret in which the buyer holds the jade he is bidding for in one hand and holds hands with the seller underneath a cloth with his other hand. The buyer only speaks the words for "hundred" or "thousand" and makes a signal with his hand under the cloth to express a number between one and ten. If a buyer extends two fingers under the cloth, for example, and shouts "thousand" he is making a bid for "2000." Burmese Jade in Kachin State : The best jade deposits are located in the Kachin State, a semi-autonomous area in northern Myanmar. Most of jade here is found between the Burmese provinces of Chindwin and Uyu. Some of the jade is sold at government sponsored markets for "ridiculously high prices" but most of it is smuggled out." In the 1980s the top nephrite colors sold for $50 to $100 a kilogram, while a brilliant green, translucent jadeite cabochon (weighing little more than an ounce) could fetch more than $50,000.
