Why Countries Are Landlocked + Canals
Why are some countries landlocked? In the case of Bolivia its because they lost a war with Chile. Ethiopia and Serbia granted independence to the parts of their countries that had a coast. Some countries like uzbekistan, are so far inland that they are doubly landlocked, which means they are both landlocked and completely surrounded by other landlocked countries. When a country is landlocked it can be difficult for them to trade, and they often have to rely on their neighbours. In Europe, the danube river lets many landlocked countries have some access to the black sea. As well, many canals exist which lets small ships travel deep inland, providing some of the benefits of having a coast. Some countries may look landlocked, but when viewed closely you can see they have tiny coasts. You can watch this video I made which explores the weird borders in those situations: https://youtu.be/elybAzSVSHc

Borders of the oceans - Video Learning - WizScience.com
The "borders of the oceans" are the limits of the Earth's oceanic waters. The definition and number of oceans can vary depending on the adopted criteria. Though generally described as several separate oceans, the world's oceanic waters constitute one global, interconnected body of salt water sometimes referred to as the World Ocean or global ocean. " ". " This concept of a continuous body of water with relatively free interchange among its parts is of fundamental importance to oceanography. The major oceanic divisions are defined in part by the continents, various archipelagos, and other criteria. The principal divisions are the: Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic Ocean, and Southern Ocean. Smaller regions of the oceans are called seas, gulfs, bays, straits, and other names. Geologically, an ocean is an area of oceanic crust covered by water. Oceanic crust is the thin layer of solidified volcanic basalt that covers the Earth's mantle. Continental crust is thicker but less dense. From this perspective, the earth has three oceans: the World Ocean, the Caspian Sea, and Black Sea. The latter two were formed by the collision of Cimmeria with Laurasia. The Mediterranean Sea is at times a discrete ocean, because tectonic plate movement has repeatedly broken its connection to the World Ocean through the Strait of Gibraltar. The Black Sea is connected to the Mediterranean through the Bosporus, but the Bosporus is a natural canal cut through continental rock some 7,000 years ago, rather than a piece of oceanic sea floor like the Strait of Gibraltar. Nature of Turkmenistan - Природа Туркменистана
The landscape of Turkmenistan unfolds like a fabled Turkmen carpet…the Caspian Sea forms the western edge while mountain ranges fringe the southern borders and parts east. It is surfaced by one of the largest expanses of sand in the world: the Karakum (black sand) desert. Turkmenistan flora includes thousands of species of plants, ranging from desert grasses and saksauls to mountain forests. The fauna is presented with the species of 91 mammals, 372 birds, 74 reptiles and 60 fishes. While flora and fauna are poorly represented in the desert, then the mountain river valleys are true wealth of Turkmenistan nature. All this wealth is protected by the Badkyz, Krasnodar and Repetek Reserves. The Turkmenistan climate is sharp continental. Daytime temperatures are very different: the average temperature in July of +30-32°С lowers to -5°С in winter. The average annual rainfall varies from 80 mm in the deserts to 400 mm in the mountains. At the same time the plains feature frequent hot winds and dust storms. Most tourists are attracted to Turkmenistan by the unique natural landmarks: tremendous flora - forests of wild fruit and nut trees, juniper forests on mountain slopes, pistachio savanna forests, saxaul forests, flood-plain tugais; diverse fauna - Central Asian leopards, argalis, koulans, goitered gazelles; enchanting sceneries - from picturesque mountain ridges to lifeless desert sands, from green oases to multikilometer sea coast.

Crisis in Ukraine : Russia Extends its Control over the Black Sea and Strategic Waterways
Crisis in Ukraine: Russia Extends its Control over the Black Sea and Strategic Waterways On May 15, President Vladimir Putin took part in the opening ceremony of the Crimean Bridge – “a super 19-kilometre-long construction” linking Crimea to Russia’s Krasnodar region. This bridge is strategic and broader the economic and geopolitical implications in the region. The decision of Crimea to join the Russian Federation has strategic and geopolitical implications. The union of Crimea with Russia redefines both the geography as well as the geopolitical chessboard in the Black Sea basin. It constitutes a major setback for US-NATO, whose longstanding objective has been to integrate Ukraine into NATO with a view to undermining Russia, while extending Western military presence in the Black Sea basin. With the March 18, 2014 Treaty signed between Russia and Crimea, the Russian Federation will extend its control over the Black Sea as well over the Sea of Azov, the West coastline of which borders on Eastern Ukraine and the Donesk region. Under the agreement between Russia and Crimea announced by president Putin, two “constituent regions” of Crimea will join the Russian Federation: the “Republic of Crimea” and the “City of Sevastopol”. Both will have the status of “autonomous regions”. The status of Sevastopol as an autonomous entity separate from Crimea is related to the location of Russia’s Naval base in Sevastopol. Since the break-up of the Soviet Union, Russia retained its naval base in Sevastopol under a bilateral agreement with Ukraine. With the signing of the March 18th Treaty, that agreement is null and void. Sevastopol including the Russian naval base become part of an autonomous region within the Russian Federation. The naval base is no within Ukraine under a lease agreement. Moreover, Crimea’s territorial waters now belong to the Russian Federation. Russia now formally controls a much larger portion of the Black Sea, which includes the entire coastline of the Crimean peninsula. The Eastern part of Crimea –including the Kerch straits– are now under Russia’s jurisdiction control. On the Eastern side of the Kerch straits is Russia’s Krasnodar region and extending southwards are the port cities of Novorossiysk and Sochi. Novorossiysk is also strategic. It is Russia’s largest commercial port on the Black Sea, at the cross-roads of major oil and gas pipelines between the Black Sea and Caspian sea. Historically, the Kerch straits have played a strategic role. They constitute a gateway from the Black Sea to Russia’s major waterways including the Don and the Volga. During World War II, the Kerch peninsula occupied by Nazi Germany was an important point of transit by land and water. In the coldest months of Winter, it became an ice bridge linking Crimea to the Krasnodar region. The Kerch straits are about 5 kilometers in length and 4.5 km. wide at the narrowest point between the tip of Eastern Crimea and the peninsula of Taman. Kerch is a major commercial port linked to railway, ferry and river routes. the integration of Crimea into the Russian Federation means that Moscow is now in full control of the Kerch Straits linking the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov. The Ukrainian authorities are no longer in control of the port of Kerch. The bilateral agreement between Russia and Ukraine governing the maritime route through the Kerch straights has been scrapped. The straits constitute an entry point into Russia’s major river waterways. The Sea of Azov connects with the Don River and the Volga, through the Volga Don Canal. In turn, the Volga flows into the Caspian sea. The Kerch straits are strategic. The Kerch-Yenikalskiy Canal allows large vessels to transit from the Black sea to the Sea of Azov. the Kerch Straits link the Black Sea to the Volga which in turn connects to the Moscow river through the Volga-Moskva canal. Full control of the narrow Kerch straits by Russia ensures unimpeded maritime transit from the Black Sea to Russia’s capital as well as the maritime route to the Caspian Sea. The Russia-Ukraine 2013 agreement pertaining to the construction of the bridge had, for all purposes already been scrapped before March 16. Crimea’s union to Russia was already in the pipeline prior to the referendum, it was a fait accompli. Less than two weeks before the March 16 Referendum, at the height of the crisis in Ukraine, Russia’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev ordered the state-road building corporation “Russian Highways” “to create a subsidiary company that will oversee the building of a bridge across the Kerch Strait”. This bridge would largely be geared towards train transport routes linking Western and Eastern Europe to the Caspian Sea basin, Kazakhstan and China. subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9IFRHTtYJFjhI5fBrLIJiQ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DNA997
Mangyshlak (Akshakar) & Karagiye
The Mangyshlak or Mangghyshlaq Peninsula is located in western Kazakhstan. It borders on the Caspian Sea in the north and west. The name means "Place for a thousand (herds) in winter." Administratively, the peninsula is in Kazakhstan's Mangystau Province. This peninsula was formerly called Sīāhkūh (Persian: سیاهکوه) i.e. 'Black Mountain', in contrast to the white ranges of Aktau i.e. 'White Mountain.' We drive past the Akshakar necropolis in Mangyshlak and then turn south towards the center of Mangistau and Karagiye. Karagiye (Kazakh: Қарақия ойпаты, Black Jaw) is a 40 km karst trench close to the Caspian. At approximately 132 metres (433 ft) below sea level it is the lowest point both in Kazakhstan and the former USSR, and the 5th lowest point on land after the Dead Sea, Afar, Turfan and Qattara.

FULL REPORT: Russian Navy from Caspian sea fires 26 missiles against Daesh's positions in Syria
7 October 2015 ~ 4 Russian warships launch 26 missiles against ISIS from Caspian sea, all targets destroyed. Four Russian Navy warships have fired a total of 26 missiles at the position of the terrorist group Islamic State in Syria, Russia’s Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu announced. The missiles were fired from the Caspian Sea. The missiles flew some 1,500 km before reaching their targets, probing their efficiency. The missile attacks came from Russia’s fleet in the Caspian Sea, which borders Russia, Iran and three other littoral countries. The precision weapons hit all intended targets. The attacks apparently required cooperation from Iran and Iraq, as the missiles had to travel through their airspace to reach Syria. Earlier, Russian warships played a key part in deploying the Russian warplanes to Syria, delivering equipment and supplies to an air base near Latakia and the Navy’s old base in Tartus. Russia has spent a week delivering airstrikes at terrorist forces in Syria, conducting over 120 combat sorties. Now the Navy is joining Russia’s Air Force in the operation. Volkosoby - The Wolf Dog Hybrids Bred to Defend Russia's Borders
READ MORE: http://tinyurl.com/h9uzwzh Protecting the borders of the largest country in the world is no easy task, but luckily Russian troops can rely on the help of Volkosoby – highly-trained wolf-dog hybrids created specifically for this purpose. Volkosoby inherit the size and strength of wolves, but retain an obedient and friendly attitude toward humans that they do not perceive as threats. Getting the best of both species seems like a worthy pursuit, but getting the desired result took years of research and failed attempts. Over 200 wolf-hybrids bred at the University of Cologne, in Germany, were deemed failures as they all exhibited the typical wolf characteristics of extreme fearful-caution around humans. But scientists and animal experts at Russia’s Prem Institute of Internal Troops finally made a breakthrough in the year 2000. They key to their success was Naida, an usually sociable Caspian Sea Wolf who got along great with humans. Interestingly, during the breeding stage, Naida actually chose a dog as her mate, despite originally being presented with the option of a male wolf. In 10 years, Naida birthed 40 ‘volkosoby’ (Russian for ‘wolf-dogs’) that shared both her wolf instincts and the father’s friendliness and obedience to humans and they have since then been used to propagate the species. A highly-trained volkosoby is valued $2,000 and $3,000, but in order to benefit from the use of these amazing creatures exclusively, the Russian Military does not sell wolf-dogs. Instead, it only leases them to domestic security organizations, under very strict conditions. The first volkosoby were trained to perform a variety of tasks like tracking explosives, detecting contraband and tracking, all of which they seemed to perform with ease. Their most impressive trait, according to Russian dog trainers is that they love to work. “When they enter the training hall their teeth chatter as they are impatient to do exercises,” animal trainer Olga Galperina says. But what makes the volkosoby hybrids so valuable to the Russian Military is their ability to outperform any dog species. For example, while German Shepherds would take about four minutes to sniff out a hiding criminal, the wolf-dogs were able to do it in just 15 to 20 seconds. The dogs tended to be skittish and haphazardly ran around the training grounds before getting down to work, while the volkosoby cut right to the chase, doing exactly what was expected of them. According to Russian animal trainers, even in an unknown environment, all they need is a single circle of the area to establish relevant locations before initiating a speedy no-nonsense track-down of the hidden drugs, criminals or explosives. If currently available information on the volkosoby is to be believed, these hybrids are superior to dogs in every aspect that counts – they have a heightened sense of smell (six times sharper than a dog), their grip is unusually strong, allowing them to bite through protective layers of plastic and felt, and they can withstand extreme temperatures. They also display great stamina and mental stability. They can track their prey continuously for up to two days without tiring. In combat situations, whereas a dog will bite an aggressor’s arm and maintain its bite, a volkosoby will also go for the arm initially, but will eventually focus its attention on a more vulnerable area, like the groin or neck. During a gunfight, the volkosoby will not react to gunfire, but instead focus on its task. Volkosoby have long been referred to as the secret weapon of Russian border patrols and law enforcement, but as they continue to prove themselves in the field, they are gaining notoriety, especially among criminals and drug dealers hoping to make it into the country undetected through the Chinese and Mongolian borders. According to Survincity, having to deal with the volkosoby is their worst nightmare.

Caspian Summit 2018: Historic and Symbolic
Historic Caspian Summit in Aktau, Kazakhstan: After more than 20 years of painstaking negotiations and diplomatic efforts, the five Caspian nations – Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan – united upon a symbolic, historic and legal framework for sharing the world’s largest inland body of water, which bridges Asia and Europe and has reserves of oil and gas as well as being a habitat for sturgeon. If sanctions act as a symbol of resistance against US interests on a global scale - then this summit marks something more monumental than that. But what's perhaps of most strategic interest in this case is that the Caspian convention prevents these five nations from opening their borders to third-parties such as the US or Nato and to project any foreign military presence at all on Caspian waters - a geopolitical triumph for Putin and Rouhani. #CaspianSummit2018 #CaspianSummit #Putin

But for Iran, the difficult part has just begun — some key negotiations with Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan are still to come, and the Supreme Leader will have the last say. So what will the map of Iran look like under Ayatollah Khamenei?

It’s almost the size of Antarctica. For most of its part, the region is inhospitable. In the summer, the weather can rise above the melting point, yet, in the winter, it can plunge down to minus 45 degrees Celsius. This situation, however, is not to last. In the coming decades, climate change will make the Arctic passages and resources become more accessible. Given the abundance of resources and critical trade routes, it should come as no surprise that the Arctic will turn into a new geopolitical flashpoint. Russian Navy's Caspian fleet joins in on strikes against ISIS in Syria
Four Russian Navy warships have fired a total of 26 cruise missiles at ISIS positions in Syria. The ships launched 26 cruise missiles at 11 targets. According to objective control data, all the targets were destroyed. No civilian objects sustained damage. The missiles flew some 1,500 km before reaching their targets, probing their efficiency. The missile attacks came from Russia’s fleet in the Caspian Sea, which borders Russia, Iran and three other littoral countries. The warships of the Caspian fleet that were involved in the missile attacks are, the Gepard-class frigate Dagestan and the Buyan-M-class corvettes Grad Sviyazhsk, Uglich and Veliky Ustyug. They fired cruise missiles from the Kalibr NK (Klub) VLS launchers. The missiles used are capable of hitting a target within 3 meters at a range of up to 2,500 km. The precision weapons hit all intended targets. The attacks required cooperation from Iran and Iraq, as the missiles had to travel through their airspace to reach Syria. The Russian Defense Ministry said it had worked with its partners to plan the flight path so that the missiles traveled only over desolate areas and didn’t pose any danger to civilians.

Mass flights of US spies registered at Russian borders
Strange activity of the US Air Forces has been registered at the Russian borders. Three US spy aircraft approached Russia’s borders in the Black Sea. According to the Western sources, which track movement of military aviation, the strategic US RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft, which took off at the Greek Souda Bay airbase, conducts a long-lasting flight with air refueling near Russian borders in the Black sea. Two P-8A Poseidon patrol aircraft have also set off for the Russian borders in the Black Sea from the Sicilian air base Sigonella. They are designed to conduct reconnaissance, look for and destroy submarines. The route lies above Greece and Bulgaria. As Pravda.Ru reported, strategic drills Caucasus 2016 were started in the South of Russia on 5 September. Experts believe, that mass flights of the American spies can be connected with it. The drills are taking place in the territory of the Crimea, the Krasnodar region, in the waters of the Black and Caspian seas. earth report V | beluga blues
http://tve.org/ Out in the northern reaches of the Caspian Sea, where Russia borders Kazakhstan there’s a war going on – and it’s all over fish. An epic struggle is being played out between competing gangs of poachers and the police. Caught in the middle is a rare and ancient fish, which is now dying out in its last stronghold. Flying over Damavand پروازی بر فراز دماوند، گنبد گیتی
Located approximately 50 kilometers northeast of Tehran, Mt. Damavand is an impressive stratovolcano that reaches 5,670 meters (18,598 feet) in elevation. Part of the Alborz Mountain Range that borders the Caspian Sea to the north, Damavand is a young volcano that has formed mostly during the Holocene Epoch (over approximately the last 10,000 years). The western flank of the volcano includes solidified lava flows with flow levees—"walls" formed as the side edges of flowing lava cooled rapidly, forming a chute that channeled the hotter, interior lava. Two such flows with well-defined levees are highlighted by snow on the mountainside. Damavand is the highest peak in Iran and the highest volcano in the Middle East. The mountain and its surrounding areas are popular hiking, climbing, and skiing destinations. While no historic eruptions of the volcano are recorded, hot springs on the flanks of the volcano and fumaroles (steam vents) in the summit crater suggest that a hot or cooling magma body is still present beneath the volcano. This continuing activity, while minor, indicates a dormant rather than extinct volcano. Source: http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=5267

5 nations surrounding Caspian Sea sign deal on legal status
"카스피해는 특수지위 바다"…러시아 등 연안국, 활용원칙 합의 Five nations surrounding the Caspian Sea have signed a landmark deal on how to legally divide it up. The leaders of Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan signed the agreement in the Kazakh city of Aktau on Sunday. It seeks to resolve more than two decades of regional tensions by creating a formula to divide resources and preventing a military presence around the sea. Another contentious issue was whether or not, despite its name, the Caspian Sea was a sea or a lake. If it's a sea, then each nation gets a share of resources in proportion to the shoreline, but a lake would mean an equal split between the states. In Sunday's deal, the leaders agreed to assume it was both, but did not yet agree on who gets what. Iran-Azerbaijan bilateral ties soar to a higher level
Iran and its northern neighbor's bilateral ties soar to a higher level. Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan are two neighbors which share over 600 kilometers of land borders, and also border each other in the Caspian Sea as well. The historical and cultural roots the two neighbors have in common demonstrate the importance of the third official visit to Iran by the Azerbaijani President, Ilham Aliyev. In his one-day visit, President Aliyev is seeking to cement ties with Iran and also to discuss bilateral and regional issues. Both countries are determined to expand cooperation in different spheres, believing there are no obstacles on the way of expansion of ties between Tehran and Baku. "I believe that this trip will result in important steps in expanding the ties between Iranian and Azerbaijani nations. Here, I officially invite President Rouhani to my country in order to continue our new phase of relations", said Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan's President. Iran's regional policy in enhancing relations with neighboring countries has entered a new phase since President Hassan Rouhani won the election in July 2013. "I would like to announce that there are absolutely no obstacles in the way of expansion of ties between Iran and Azerbaijan", said Iran's President, Hassan Rouhani. The trip will open a new chapter in political, cultural, and economic relations between the two neighbors, as a number of MOUs were signed by the two countries' ministers to cooperate in areas such as trade, sports, energy, and construction. One of such agreements is to build power plants at the border River Aras. Iran's Energy Minister, Hamid Chitchian told us: "Based on today's agreement, two power plants will be built on the two sides of Aras River. The two power plants will use the common water to produce electricity and then the water will pour back into the river". Iran recognized Azerbaijan's independence in 1991, and diplomatic relations between the two countries were established a year later. Data from the State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan show that trade turnover between the two countries amounted to over $280 million in 2013. The two presidents have stressed that Tehran and Baku are willing to increase their trade volume and further improve relations, which they say will help promote stability in the region.

No Foreign Military Presence On Caspian Waters
The Caspian Sea is the largest inland lake in the world. It contains huge oil, gas and fishing resources. After more than two decades of negotiations, littoral countries of the Caspian Sea reached a deal regarding legal status and other issues related to the sea. One of the most important agreements of the Caspian Summit is a legally binding convention that prevents Caspian nations from opening their borders to third-party aggressors or allowing any foreign military presence at all on Caspian waters. Why it is vital to settle the Caspian's sea-or-lake dispute
The energy potential of the Caspian region will not be realised until a decades-long dispute over the division of the Caspian Sea is settled, says World Review expert Luke Coffey in a Q&A video. If the Caspian countries resolve this dispute, a pipeline can finally be built under the sea which will offer a new alternative to oil and gas for Europe.

Europe is one of the world's seven continents. Comprising the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, Europe is generally divided from Asia to its east by the water divide of the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus region (specification of borders) and the Black Sea to the southeast. Europe is bordered by the Arctic Ocean and other bodies of water to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Black Sea and connected waterways to the southeast. Yet the borders for Europe is a concept dating back to classical antiquity which are somewhat arbitrary, as the term continent can refer to a cultural and political distinction or a physiographic one. Europe is the world's second-smallest continent by surface area, covering about 10,180,000 square kilometres (3,930,000 sq mi) or 2% of the Earth's surface and about 6.8% of its land area. Of Europe's approximately 50 states, Russia is the largest by both area and population (although the country has territory in both Europe and Asia), while the Vatican City is the smallest. Europe is the third-most populous continent after Asia and Africa, with a population of 731 million or about 11% of the world's population. Europe, in particular Ancient Greece, is the birthplace of Western culture. It played a predominant role in global affairs from the 16th century onwards, especially after the beginning of colonialism. Between the 16th and 20th centuries, European nations controlled at various times the Americas, most of Africa, Oceania, and large portions of Asia. Both World Wars were largely focused upon Europe, greatly contributing to a decline in Western European dominance in world affairs by the mid-20th century as the United States and Soviet Union took prominence. During the Cold War, Europe was divided along the Iron Curtain between NATO in the west and the Warsaw Pact in the east. European integration led to the formation of the Council of Europe and the European Union in Western Europe, both of which have been expanding eastward since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

China Completes Russia-bound Oil Pipeline in Border Town
China on Tuesday completed the construction of a crude oil pipeline section in the China-Russia border town of Mohe, as part of a massive oil pipeline project across China-Russia border. The completion of the 470.5 kilometer-long pipeline in Mohe marks that more than half of the entire pipeline project has been finished, according to the project’s engineers. "The China-Russia Second Crude Oil Pipeline Project starts from its north end in the Xin'an Township, Mohe County in the Heilongjiang Province's Greater Khingan mountains. Then passing through the Greater Khingan mountains to its south end at the Linyuan Oil Station in the city of Daqing. It measures 940 kilometers in total length," said Ding Heming, deputy directing manager, China-Russia Second Crude Oil Pipeline Project. The completed part of the project has featured the adoption of many advanced technologies, most of which have been used for the first time in China, Ding added. "The China-Russia Second Crude Oil Pipeline Project is China's first pipeline project that has fully applied environment-protective automatic joint coating technology. It is also China's first project that has adopted full-life cycle-database management, as well as the quick response code personnel management. The adoption of these technologies has enabled our project to reach an advanced international level in technical and managerial aspects," said Ding. Complicated weather and geographic conditions such as extreme cold, permafrost and swampy regions had added a lot more difficulties to the project, said Ding. After completion, the project will be able to transport 1,500 tons of crude oil from Russia to China per year. The project has been regarded as an important support to optimize China’s oil supply and demand, and boost the industrial economy in China northeastern region. http://www.cctvplus.com/news/20170103/8039977.shtml#!language=1 Subscribe us on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/CCTVPlus CCTV+ official website: http://www.cctvplus.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/cctv-news-content Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NewsContent.CCTVPLUS Twitter: https://twitter.com/CCTV_Plus
