Read my blog about the latest amazing discovery on Electric Eels https://goo.gl/8mlSIb Hey guys, Bill here, In this series we have covered scores of epic amazon river monsters, like the Black Piranha, the Vampire Fish, and Arapaima. ---------------LINKS TO VIDEOS SEEN IN THIS SHOW Aligator shocked by eel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGbj9Up4dvs Indians hunting eels https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3CImU5hFzQ Jermey wade lassos an Electric eel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWpOAmyJ7F8 __________________________ Today, we’re heading deep, deep into the Amazon - to a place you can only reach by float plane - and that’s because this time, Steve Townson and I are looking for something really special. STEVE: Today I am gong to take you to see one of the most dangerous river monsters there is… the electric eel… Now I am a little bit nervous about this… and a little scared too because they are known to kill people. You wait until you see this. Electric eels, as it turns out are not actually eels. They come from the knife fish family. They are closer to Carp and catfish than they are true eels… They are air breathers that like to inhabit the swamps and creeks around here. And that’s where Steve starts his hunt. These eels we’re looking for can grow to 8.2 feet or about 2 and a half meters. They can weigh up to 44 lbs or 20 Kilos. According to some sources, they can put out a electric jolt of up 900 Volts which is more than enough to stop a human heart. Electric eels create their voltage by using 80% of their body mass to store 6000 or so cells that act like tiny batteries. Once fully charged, the eel can release all that stored energy at once, or in a series of jolts, depending on the needs of the situation. In this case, a caiman thought it might go for an eel dinner. but the eel used a full jolt to show the caiman it’s fatal mistake. There are many ways to catch electric eels. Some indians lure them into a pool of poisoned water. Jeremy Wade from River Monsters fame likes to use a lasso… but Steve likes to stick with small circle hooks… One way not to catch them is like this. In this video, the fisherman learns the hard way that it’s not a good idea to stand in the water while trying to catch them… Luckily his friends pulled him out of the water before he drowned… and he survived unhurt… Now that we see it up close, look how small those eyes are... That’s because electric eels don’t use their eyes very much. Instead they use electrical impulses as radar to move around and even hunt prey…. Now the trick will be getting him off the hook without getting shocked. We should have brought rubber gloves, but then again, why spend money on that when a twig will do the job for free. STEVE - There ya go a real Amazon river monster…. that thing could kill you. On the way home, we stopped to get some underwater footage of electric eels at this creek we found…We wanted to see better how they move themselves around so well without a big tail fin. Now look on the bottom of the fish here. You see these fantails that run along the bottom of the eel. These are actually very long anal fins used to propel the fish. Depending on how they are used, they can propel the fish forward, in reverse, up, and down. Very cool. BILL: Well okay, that all the time I have for this video. I want to thank Steve for taking the time to show me that amazing fish… and also asks you guys a question. From where does the electric eel produce more voltage, the head, or the tail? Leave you answer in the comment section below and then e-mail me for the official answer! Now here are some scenes from other videos in this series…

This Video was taken on a diving trip to Wakatobi, Indonesia. One of my fellow diver, Tommy saw a sea snake wandering around coral reef looking for a prey when suddenly, BAM!! The snake strikes in to a hole and pulled out a yellow spotted moray eel between her jaws. The sea snake is known as one of the most poisonous snake of all but the moray eel didn't give up easily. They struggled. I was stunned and didn't realize that my position was not really a safe distance when suddenly the eel manage to escape and hide behind the coral while the upset snake tried to find something else to bite. It tried to bit Tommy but luckily he was on position to wave his fins and defended himself. It was really a terrifying encounter. Notes: background music has been swapped, now using music from youtube music library.

James Prosek tracks the life journey of Eli the Anguilla eel as she (yes, she) travels her mysterious "backward" migration from the sea to fresh water and back again. Was out trying to film the good old Lingcod catch and cook. Daniel and I went on the Jetty with some squid and we knew there was a good chance to catch a rockfish, ling, cabezon or Monkeyface Prickle Back Eel. Ended up catching the latter and decided to cook it since eels this size don't come around too often. Made our fire, filleted, gutted, skinned and cleaned the fish before seasoning it with salt, pepper, and mesquite seasoning. Once the fish was cooked Daniel threw it all together in a taco and I made myself a bowl with cilantro, avocado, onions, salsa and butter. Highly recommended whether you cook it on the rocks or take it home and enjoy it that way! This is my video about: Sea snake vs Moray Eel _ Moray Eel attack Sea snake for breakfast in Manila Philippines SUBSCRIBE NOW: https://goo.gl/3y6gbU Morays secrete a protective mucus over their smooth, scaleless skin, which in some species contains a toxin. They have much thicker skin and high densities of goblet cells in the epidermis that allows mucus to be produced at a higher rate than in other eel species. This allows sand granules to adhere to the sides of their burrows in sand-dwelling morays, thus making the walls of the burrow more permanent due to the glycosylation of mucins in mucus. Their small, circular gills, located on the flanks far posterior to the mouth, require the moray to maintain a gap to facilitate respiration. ►►►►►►►►► THANKS FOR WATCHING ◄◄◄◄◄◄◄◄◄ ► AND DON'T FORGET TO LIKE COMMENTS AND SUBSCRIBE!

I believe I shot this around April 2004 in the "Boulder City" diving area of the Similan Islands in Thailand. Backstory - Before coming on camera, we saw a sea snake venture into the hole of a Moray Eel. As a result, the eel began attacking the snake. In response, the snake started to swallow the eel at the tail. As the snake swallows the eel, the eel keeps trying to bit the snake, with little success. We didn't get to see the end result of the fight because we were getting low on air and had to go back to the surface. Gulper eels are deep-sea fish that live throughout the world’s ocean from a few hundred meters to over 2,000 meters (over 6,500 feet) in the deep midwater. The gulper eel's adaptations make it a very successful deep-sea predator—their oversized jaws and stomach allow them to capture prey, swallowing it whole. Using MBARI's remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), we've seen gulper eels fewer than twenty times in 30 years of exploration in the deep midwater. Despite its rare appearance, this quintessential deep-sea fish is featured in MBARI's logo. Sea anguille/Eel sea fish What is an Eel? (and why is an electric eel not one of them?) The electric eel is not a true eel. Nor is the "wolf eel" in the picture below. The moray eel, on the other hand, is a true eel. What's the difference? The easy answer is that a true eel is a member of the fish order Anguilliformes, and that other eel-like fish are not. But this begs the question: what characteristics are used to place a fish in the eel order? 1. They have a dorsal fin that is continuous with the caudal and anal fin. 2. They have very small , embedded scales or no scales. 3. As juveniles and adults, members of the family Anguillidae live in fresh water, but they breed in the ocean, where most other members of the eel order, including the Moray, spend their entire lives. These freshwater eels are skin-breathers, absorbing oxygen into dense beds of capillaries that lie very close under the skin. 4. They are "slippery as an eel" due to the production of slime. In the green moray, yellow slime overlying a blue body produces its greenish color. 5. Larval eels are flattened ribbonlike creatures and look so different from the adults that some larval forms were once considered to be separate species of fish! 6. They have numerous sharp teeth. 7. Freshwater eels are an important food fish in many countries. Moray eels, on the other hand, are toxic. The "wolf eel" is a member of the Family Anarhichadidae (wolf fishes). More information about wolf eels can be found here. Electric "eels" are members of the Family Electrophoridae in the Order Gymnotiformes or knifefish. An interesting thing about this order is that their closest relatives are in the catfish order, the Siluriformes. What are some differences between electric eels and true eels? 1. The electric eel is a freshwater fish, and lays its eggs in fresh water, while most true eels are marine for at least part of their lives, and all true eels spawn in the ocean. 2. Electric eels have no teeth. 3. Electric eels have no dorsal fin. 4. Electric eels are air-breathers. In the warm, oxygen-poor waters of the Amazon basin, breathing air is an important survival strategy.
