Steve Job's Google of the 60s: Whole Earth Catalog revisited (+ homestead tour of a former editor)

16:34
Steve Jobs called The Whole Earth Catalog "one of the bibles of my generation". He went on to explain in his Stanford commencement speech in 2005, "It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions". The Whole Earth Catalog was a kind of "unofficial handbook of the counterculture". It was, pre-Internet, a way for anyone anywhere to tap into a global economy. Founder and editor Stewart Brand set out to create a catalog- like the then-very-practical-and-universal catalog L.L. Bean- that would showcase all of the great tools of the world to help anyone do things for themselves or learn about big ideas. Lloyd Kahn was the Shelter editor of the catalog. Kahn, an insurance broker-turned-builder, leveraged his experience with Whole Earth and began to publish his own books. First, he wrote very popular books on dome building. Kahn had become "the spokesman for the counterculture on domes" (his dome home even appeared in Life Magazine), but he took the books out of print when he decided the building style just wasn't practical and "I didn't want any more domes on my kharma". In 1974 Kahn took down his dome and replaced it with a more traditional handmade home. "Built stud-frame house using recycled lumber, doors, windows," he writes in his 2004 book Home Work, "Relief somehow to discover old ways can work best." Today, Lloyd and his wife Lesley Creed run their own homestead in Bolinas, California where they tend an extensive organic garden and bantam chickens, grind their own wheat, make their own sourdough, spin their own wool, and continue to build their own structures (most recently, a chicken coop with a living roof). One Book EVERY Designer Should Own

03:05
A review of one of my all-time favorite books; one I think every designer should own. Part review and part personal reflection, it's a continuation of my previous video on goal setting. As I struggled with my traditional goal setting exercise this year, I stumbled on a new methodology and consulted this formative book in my library about the life and work of Dieter Rams for guidance. It's a book I think should be in every designer's collection and in this video I share how it's shaped my architecture practice and my approach to life. I view books as the raw materials of creativity. Looking at and learning from the work of others is crucial to the development of your personal style and I encourage sampling from every possible source you can: graphic designers, authors, engineers, sculptors, every field relies on some measure of creativity. The deeper your understanding of what’s out there the more source material you have to draw upon and the more things you can smash together to craft your own style. Dieter Rams designed more than 500 products over his forty-two-year career at Braun; he’s regarded as one of the most influential industrial designers of the 20th century yet the path that led him there was anything but premeditated. The happenstance of it is as empowering as it is unsettling. This volume explains the history and events that shaped his personal esthetic. Be sure to add this book to your library for context, depth and to understand the true measure of Herr Rams' contribution to the design world. Study it, not to replicate his style (you don’t want to look like him) but to see like him. And a special thanks to my grandfather, whose counsel I miss each day, but who will always live on in my studio and work. // GEAR I USE // DRONE: *Mavic Pro by DJI: http://amzn.to/2hW3dTA DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 6DMKII http://thirtybyforty.com/6dmkii * Canon 80D: http://amzn.to/2fBWGMQ LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI * Canon 10 - 18mm f4.5 - 5.6 IS Lens: http://amzn.to/2vyErvS * Canon 24-70mm f2.8L Lens: http://amzn.to/2DMt0Y5 MUSIC I USE: * http://thirtybyforty.com/music AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Copic Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/copic-sketch * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap CAD DRAWING TEMPLATE: * Download here: http://thirtybyforty.com/autocad-template STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? AbeBooks: The Difference Between an Ex-Library & an Ex Libris Book?

01:29
When searching on AbeBooks, you will see the terms ex-library and ex libris. Although they sound similar, it's important to not confuse them. Ex-library indicates that the book was once in a public library. Ex-library books are usually identified with some marking of the library - a stamp, a card pocket, or catalog number. They are often marked as "discarded" or "withdrawn" or have their catalog number struck through when sold by the library. Ex-library books are often worn by use but they are very affordable. Ex libris refers a book that has come from the library of an individual. Ex libris is Latin for "From the Library of......" An ex-libris book usually has a bookplate -- a small print of artwork pasted in that features the owner's name or initials. World's Smallest Books from the World’s First All-Miniature Bookstore

01:08
A spectacular collection of 151 volumes, comprising nearly the entire catalog of the press from 1977 through 1979. Housed in a custom revolving four-sided book case beautifully constructed of leather-covered wood, with four glass-paneled hinged doors, with latched closures (one lacking tasseled chain). The four sides are labeled above the doors: "The Classic Series" (54 volumes), "The Companion Books" (28 volumes), "The Chronicles of Sherlock Holmes" (41 volumes), and "The Cameo Series" (28 volumes). With the door open, there is a small sliding shelf for display of individual volumes (each sliding shelf is shared with the case on the opposing side). One the top is a label reading: Barbara Raheb Miniature Literary Masterpieces. The books are, with very few exceptions, less than 1" in height. The case measures approximately 12¾" in height, and 7½" in width and depth. Case custom made for the Lilliput Oval Saloon. A magnificent collection. OSHO: Books I Have Loved

15:13
"To me a book is not just a book; it is a love affair... I have loved reading from my very childhood. My own personal library consisted of one hundred fifty thousand rare books of all the religions, philosophies, poetry, literature. And I have read all of them, but with no purpose; I enjoyed it." The OSHO Library is maintained by Osho International Foundation. With the exception of about 1O,OOO, which have been gathered on his request after he stopped reading, all of these books have been read, signed and dated by Osho. Osho's personal library is now housed in a building named "Lao Tzu House" at the Osho International Meditation Resort in Pune, India. The library holds more than 150,000 volumes, mostly in the humanities, including history, psychology, religion and philosophy. It also features a quite substantial collection of the classic literature of East and West, along with an impressive array of biographies, books on physics and earth sciences, etc. The library has been created with aesthetic considerations in mind, the object being to create a light and airy feeling rather than the "heavy" and "serious" look of so many libraries. Books are sorted according to size and color, and placed on the shelves in an arrangement that suggests ocean waves. The effect is organic and natural, with no solid blocks of color or size to grab the eye and weigh it down. Osho himself was an avid book collector and reader throughout most of his life, and the library includes volumes that he has kept in pristine condition since his childhood. He liked to underline his books, and to create an individualized painting on the front pages, often including his signature, in place of a printed book plate. Part of his work was to give daily extemporaneous talks, which he would sometimes punctuate with quotes and passages from books he had read. The library was catalogued by hand for many years, with cross-references that included not only title, author and subject matter, but such things as the cover color, number of pages and trim size. In that way, if Osho wanted to see that "big book on Einstein's theory of relativity with the blue cover, " the librarian could locate the needle in the haystack with relative ease. In 1987, a three-year project was initiated to computerize the card catalog. The UK library journal LOGOS has published an extensive article about the library written by: Pierre Evald, Department of Library & Information Management Royal School of Library and Information Science Langagervej 4 - DK- 220 Aalborg Ø Room: 418 T: + 45 98 15 79 22 + 45 98 15 79 22, E-mail: [email protected] To understand more about OSHO Talks, their context and purpose, see: http://oshotalks.com/AboutOshoTalks.aspx This video is available for translation as part of the 'OSHO TALKS Video Translation Project. Archive.org: Every Book in the World at Your Fingertips

Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2011/11/30/Brewster_Kahle_Universal_Access_to_All_Knowledge Brewster Kahle, founder of the Internet Archive, discusses their mission to digitize all the world's books. He explains that in addition to making the books available online, they've also built bookmobiles that can provide print copies of these books on-demand in impoverished communities. ----- As founder and librarian of the storied Internet Archive (deemed impossible by all when he started it in 1996), Brewster Kahle has practical experience behind his universalist vision of access to every bit of knowledge ever created, for all time, ever improving. He will speak to questions such as these: Can we make a distributed web of books that supports vending and lending? How can our machines learn by reading these materials? Can we reconfigure the information to make interactive question answering machines? Can we learn from past human translations of documents to seed an automatic version? And, can we learn how to do optical character recognition by having billions of correct examples? What compensation systems will best serve creators and networked users? How do we preserve petabytes of changing data? Brewster Kahle, a computer engineer, internet entrepreneur, and digital librarian, founded the Internet Archive in 1996. He is focused on providing universal access to all knowledge, and developing technologies for information discovery and digital libraries. He was co-founder of Alexa Internet, which helped catalog the Web, which was later sold to Amazon.com.

Enoch: The BOOK of the End ~ BEST ENOCH online. (BOOK of ENOCH explained)

53:17
Enoch: The BOOK of ENOCH gives prophecy about the future of the world. End Times: Enoch is also a Book of the "End-Times". For info on God in a Nutshell films, or the Enoch study: https://godinanutshell.com/ Enoch's prophecies look striking like your current news. Enoch, the Book of Enoch, is explained in this video by Trey Smith. The Book of Enoch is believed by many to be what Enoch himself says it is: A pre-flood text. Enoch: Also in this video are prophecies by Kim Clement that are coming for both the US and ISRAEL in LARGE ways. Kim Clement is called by some the world's LARGEST "END-TIMES" prophet. Though Kim Clement himself likely would have never referred to himself in that way. Enoch: Trey Smith Enoch study ~ check at God in a Nutshell for details. ENOCH: Trey Smith will be doing a full study for those interested on the Book of Enoch on/at the God in a Nutshell website (https://godinanutshell.com/). You will need to check there for details. As far as we know, there is NO other full walk-through of this hardcore "END-TIMES" book anywhere. So, Trey Smith / God in a Nutshell are going to do one. ENOCH: The Enoch study will literally go through the Book of Enoch in a number of live-streams spread likely several weeks apart each. It will be an in-depth study of the entire Book of Enoch, from fallen angels, to demons, to dimensions, to the end of the age..... all of it. These live streams (as well as the past ones we will catalog) will be available on the God in a Nutshell project at: https://godinanutshell.com/ These sessions will be done from Trey's home (by the fireplace), also probably from Israel as well. Just a cozy, relaxed and easy walk through of the BEST of the Book of Enoch every few weeks for those interested to understand this book right from their couch.... Currently the God in a Nutshell is also working on "Exodus". Exodus will be the next full length film to be released solely by Trey Smith. Exodus is a film Trey Smith has worked on for a number of years on and off. IT is an important film (all timing is in the Lord's hands on these things). 05:54
Accio Harry Potter translations! Translating the Harry Potter books written by J.K. Rowling, in over 60 languages around the world, was not for the faint of heart or vocabulary. Translators didn't have advanced copies of the books to get a headstart and these books could take months to adapt from English. They also had to be clever in their solutions because the books are filled with wordplays, invented words, puns, British culture references, riddles, and more. The longest book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, at 870 pages was published June 21, 2003. The first translation of it was ready July 21, 2003. Translators had to work day and night to have them ready for eager readers. Even then, fans still banded together to create illegal translations of the series. Michael Kenna :: Images of the Seventh Day

17:43
Michael Kenna is certainly one of the most successful contemporary photographers. His work is shown in exhibitions, museums and galleries around the world. Images of the Seventh Day is a catalog for an exhibition of the same name done in Italy back in 2010. As most of Kenna's books are thematic and relative to his series based projects, Images of the Seventh Day is different. Produced for the exhibition, this is a full career retrospective showcasing some of his earliest work going back to 1977. We have covered Kenna before on the show, but I think it would be fun to revisit him in a new light through some of the rare images in this book. The interesting thing to look at is the influence of Bill Brandt in Michael Kenna's early work. We see how this transformed over the years to Kenna's own style. Also notable here are some abstract images and still-life work that Kenna is not really known for. These images are beautiful as well and its interesting to see how Michael Kenna has incorporated this type of image into his larger landscape work. How audiobooks are recorded

An audiobook narrator explains her process – and reads our writing. Check out other Vox Almanac videos here: http://bit.ly/2DkcQou Follow Phil Edwards on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/philedwardsinc1 Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO To investigate how audiobooks are made, we sat down with a professional audiobook narrator, Suzy Jackson, to break down her work. And to make the audiobook recording process even more apparent, Vox's Phil Edwards wrote one for her. According to Suzy Jackson, the hardest part of recording an audiobook isn't acting as different characters, it's the long hours. And random esophageal noises.
