Just because a symbol is used by one culture or group, doesn’t mean it’s off-limits to other groups. Countless symbols have been used over and over again by various groups throughout history, oftentimes with drastically different meanings. Svastika is a sacred symbol for Latvians, some believe it is a symbol of being a Latvian and all things Latvian. It is so sad we can't use it in public outside our country. Some people were attacked for that.

The fleur-de-lis is also a symbol of many of the European royal families (usually in heraldry), and from memory (which may be wrong) is part of the Prince of Wales' heraldry. Not just Prince Charles, but the heraldry of each Prince of Wales as and when there is one - must be a son who is the first-born child, so if a female is the first, there won't be a Prince of Wales. When Charles becomes king, William will become the Prince of Wales and will take on that heraldry. Just a bit of extra info.

Well, considering that an extension of the index and little fingers is a symbol for heavy metal music, popularized by Ronnie James Dio throughout his career, and given Norway's issue with the Black Metal movement throughout the 90's, I guess they do have good reason to be alarmed by a political/public display of the symbol. Granted, not many of them burn the church types are around anymore, but still.
TheaterRaven (1 year ago)
I'm surprised the pentagram didn't make the list. The pentagram, a five-pointed star, is a symbol that represents the divine in nature: One point stands for the spirit/life force everything comes from while the four remaining points stand for the elements (earth, air, water, and fire). The pentagram symbolized this to ancient pagans and is still used in this way by modern Pagans today, myself included. The pentagram was also used in the early days of Christianity to represent the five wounds of Christ. However, much like the inverted cross, the pentagram, both in its upright and inverted forms, has been hijacked by anti-Christian people, Satanists, and ignorant Hollywood screenwriters to stand for evil or symbolize Devil worship. Christian fundamentalists also point to the pentagram as a wicked symbol when firstly, they don't know the actual meaning behind it, and secondly, they don't realize people of their own faith once used the symbol as well.

totally missing how the horns hand symbol is a metal/rock gesture? or how it started with rock legend dio, who got it from his catholic grandma, who knew it as a catholic gesture? no? just 'satanism' (which is probably actually people thinking its satanist because of the metal association and a number of north european metal bands being satanist) and a sports team. oh, okay.

I'd suggest the color green. green in America symbolizes money, military, the conservationists/the green energy movement, but it's even more confusing overseas. Iran alone it's the titular symbol of the Green movement which pushed for government reform and modern democracy but is also the color of Holiness in Islam, thus is worn at pro theocracy rallies. also, EPA + ad counsel teamed up in the 2010s to make a bizarre ad campaign trying to brand "being green" to mean 'getting a radon test.' Despite many media buys it didn't catch on and was a huge waste of tax payer money.

We have symbol of swastika in our culture too just it isn't called swastika for us. We call it more like fire cross than swastika. And it has positive meaning. It just pains that Nazi did bad things to people but also trying to destroy other cultures by showing that using them are bad thing. https://lv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ugunskrusts_(z%C4%ABme) I want to be able to use these symbols and not to be connected to (or misunderstood as) Nazi.

Simon you forgot to mentioned that the bullhorns mean in southeuropean culture (especcially italy and spain) that someone had sexual intercourse with the others spouse. So guys never do your texas horns in italy you will regret it ;)
Der Headbanger (1 year ago)
#4 is not linked to Satanism - that's rediculous. At least nowadays. It's used to appreciate everything Metal! Ever since Ronnie James Dio (or Gene Simmons? :D ) introduced it. He got the Symbol from his supersticious grandmother which used it to shoo the devil away! So it's pretty much the exact opposite. And since skandinavian countries are the stronghold of metal they surely know about this - unlike uninformed lazy journalists looking for sensationalism. HAIL METAL!! \m/
soni blackbones (1 year ago)
The Devil's Horns come from Italy, where it is used against the "evil eye" strangers might give you because they envy you or something. The Swastika was used also by the vikings, as one of many symbols related to Thor. Nice video, though a bit more research would be helpful :)

about the Jews - god has a name and they do know it, they just don't say it. In fact, the name appears EVERY time god is mentioned. it's "יהוה" or "ye'hova"

i was hoping for the yin-yang as well. romans legionaries used it first on shields in the 3rd century CE, while china first used it in the 11th century.
Rolling Thunder (1 year ago)
The "symbol used by the Jews" is called the "Star of David" and is a holy symbol. The derisive tone of your voice betrays your anti-semitism. Believers in Judaism call their God "Yahweh" (English spelling and pronunciation). Written by a Christian!
Francisco Mariño (1 year ago)
The "rainbow flag", now being a symbol of the LGBTI movement, is also very, very similar to the Inca Empire of Tawantinsuyu colors... This pisses native traditionalists and nationalists here in South America a lot! LOL

The swastika is also used on some Japanese Temples, and the horns are also used to symbolize the horned god among neo-pagans as well as an element in metal culture. Strange that these weren't mentioned. It would have only added about 5 or 6 seconds to the running time.

The reason the CIA used former Nazi intelligence officers was because they understood the operations of the Soviets far better than the Americans did. One former intelligence officer who would later become head of West Germany's intelligence agency was such an officer and he did have some infiltration of the Soviet Union during the war. Some former CIA officers did admit they did know what they were doing. However, this was often at the cost of letting some who were war criminals go free. This was not to say all of them were war criminals but some notable ones did use what was known as the "Rat-line" to escape most notably Klaus Barbie who was later captured and sentenced to life imprisonment. It wouldn't have surprised me if the Soviets also did the same thing with former German intelligence officers if they were willing to impart some information they had on the Americans for the Russians.

On the subject of Hindus believing there are many Gods, many Hindus won't agree with that statement as such. They would instead describe their pantheon as one all-permeating Deity, who has different aspects, represented by different names, roles and attributes. On the other hand, the Judaic religions used to have a multitude of angels ("The Lord and His Hosts", or how is the usual English wording of that Old-Testamental formula?), who are in many ways comparable to the lesser Deities of other religions... And I wouldn't be surprised at all if, much farther back, both Hinduism and Judaism have roots in Ancient Sumer.

Leopard-King (1 year ago)
Symbols are stolen because they petrify meaning. There is no way around this, one must use static symbols to light the path to the flux of meaning. However the down side is that these idols can be snatched and repurposed. I do not believe in the story of Saint Peter being crucified upside down. However, even if it were true, Catholics violate the moral of THEIR OWN STORY! If Peter got crucified upside down to avoid the the company of the notable death of the LORD why would anyone TURN IT INTO A SYMBOL TO BE REMEMBERED LIKE UNTO THE LORD! You are doing the exact opposite of what Peter was trying to avoid by being crucified upside down. He did not want attention and you gave him attention and acclaim that is on par with the LORD.

Errmmm, no Nazi sympathizers in the U.K. before and during WW2 right? Is that why you said it under your breath about some in the United States supporting Nationalist Socialist brand. Kind of a bad place to put a zinger imo. Plenty of blame to go round in polluting the swastika from its' original meaning...

I have seen photos from the turn of the century, i.e.-1900 where some baseball players were members of the Swastika baseball team. Yes, they had big swastikas on their uniforms. Nazis were not even invented at that time. It was a reference to the Hindu meaning.

By the way its quite interesting how the Swastika became a Nazi symbol. It points back to the original theory about Arians etc. It was originally a linguistic term for a certain language family that had originated in each other and had many similarities. Those reached from India over the Arabic world to the germanien languages such as English, German, Dutch etc. (Semetic was a counter part. That´s where the word antisemitism originated from.) This theory was later converted from pure linguistical science into race concepts in which the Nazis saw the Arian as the best race. Since the Nazis knew that this also made Arabs and Indians part of their elite race they took a symbol from the Indian culture for their logo.

no we actually do know how the skull and crossbones came to be. do research. if a ship came down with a sickness they would fly the flag of death to warn others to steer clear. pirates soon adopted this as a strategy maneuver allowing a element stealth to their plundering.
david barnett (1 year ago)
Pirates would also just ly the same flag as the enemy. So that doesnt really say much. They stole flags then used then.

I read in a few accounts that Captain Jack Rackham was the first pirate to fly the skull and crossbones. But then again who knows.
